Snell Acoustics Phantom Center Loudspeaker First Look
At last year's CES, Snell Acoustics announced their $25,000 a pair near-flagship loudspeaker, the Phantom B7. You know it was only a matter of time before they came out with a matching center. Apparently, it only took them a year to bring out their new Phantom Center. At $7,500, it's actually quite affordable compared to the larger brethren. What remains to be seen is what surrounds they'll come out with for this line. Snell is obviously not interested in being slowed down by the economy. Instead they've got higher ambitions with this uncompromising loudspeaker system aimed at the most serious audiophiles that have big enough wallets to match their aspirations. Time will tell if their strategy will pay off.
ADAM A7 Monitor Speakers Review
The ADAM A7 ($1149/pr) is a two way near-field studio monitor with the aforementioned tweeter and a 6.5 in. carbon mid/bass driver. This is all powered by two 50-watt amplifiers (one per driver.) Housed in an attractive black cabinet that weighs 18 lbs and measures 13in. high x 7.5in wide x 11in deep, the top front edges are beveled to reduce surface reflections from the tweeter.
Cabasse Ambrose 3 LCR Loudspeaker First Look
Looking for an LCR with a coaxial tweeter/midrange, propriary woofers, and great aesthetics? The Cabasse as got all that and more. They employ a D'Appolito design in a sealed enclosure with non-parallel sides and magnetic grills. They are rated down to 75Hz with a receiver friendly impedance of 8 ohms. Now all you need is to shell out $3000 each.
Atlantic Technology H-PAS Bookshelf Speakers First Look
Atlantic Technology showed off a prototype compact bookshelf loudspeaker using the company's revolutionary H-PAS bass technology at the 2010 CEDIA Expo. This is the first time industry insiders were able to see a bookshelf version of the well-regarded AT-1 H-PAS floorstanding speakers. We remember the first time we got a look at the larger models - it was easy to wnder just where exactly all that bass was coming from.
Aperion Audio Zona Wireless Surround Speaker First Look
Aperion Audio unveiled a new surround sound wireless bookshelf speaker system called Zona which is said to produce audiophile grade sound using the reliable and proven technology for up to 150ft. The Aperion Zona Speaker System consists of a compact wireless transmitter and two two-way powered speakers (consisting of a 4.5" woofer and 1" soft dome tweeter) with tuned port and built-in wireless receivers. Intended applications include surround sound, PC gaming or any other environment where small compact high performance speakers are required without the clutter or inconvenience of running speaker cables.
Klipsch RB-51 Bookshelf Speakers Preview
Around late Spring, Audioholics reviewed the Klipsch RF-62s bookshelf speakers in a tower speaker face-off. Participants in the speaker shootout seemed to rank the Klipsch very well, enjoying its clarity and high frequency definition as well as its deep bass response. Recently we were personally introduced to its "little brother", as it were, the RB-51 Bookshelf speakers. This speaker shares the same 3.5" x 2.5" Tractrix Horn and have a "deep throat" from which the high frequency, natural sound emanates and spreads into the listening area. Behind this horn lies a 1-inch titanium tweeter with a powerful neodymium motor structure that keeps it cool, and thus efficient, delivering excellent dynamics and highs that don't suffer from compression or lack of definition - even at loud volumes.
JBL Synthesis THX Ultra2 Certified SK2-3300 LCR First Look
The THX Ultra2 certified JBL Synthesis SK2-3300 LCR has technology based on the flagship Project Everest. Sporting dual 10" woofers plus two ports, a heavily braced enclosure with a curved front baffle, and dual binding posts plus horn-loaded midrange and ultra high-frequency drivers with extension all the way up to 50kHz. The 1" ultra-high-frequency beryllium diaphragm driver is paired with a 60x30 degree JBL Bi-Radial horn. The horn shape is designed to increase off axis response as horn-loaded drivers are known for their directionality. The 3" beryllium diaphragm midrange/high-frequency compression driver is mated with a 100x60 degree horn. The 10" woofers are treated with JBL's Aquaplas material, has dual 3-inch heavy-duty edge-wound voice coils, neodymium motor structures, and cast-aluminum frames. In our book, if there was ever a speaker designed to be heard and not seen, the JBL Synthesis SK-3300 LCR is it.
Energy Veritas V-5.1 Bookshelf Speakers Review
The Energy Veritas V-5.1 Bookshelf Speakers are... bar none... the most beautiful speakers I've ever seen. While also available in a Gloss Piano Black, the samples we have here are the Piano Rosenut finish and, as you can tell, they are absolutely pristine in terms of the veneer and the gloss coat. Everything about these speakers screams high-end, yet they cost just $400 each. While that's not exactly pocket change, it's a far cry from what many people consider "high-end" and yet most of the audiophile speakers we've seen in our day don't approach this type of build quality and styling. Let me break it down. The finish, while impressive, is just the start. This speaker is a 2-way bass reflex design. Inset within the front baffle is a custom brushed aluminum inner plate. It unites the 1" aluminum dome tweeter with heat-synched neodymium motor and 5-1/4 inch Kevlar woofer.
NHT SuperZero 2.0 Mini-Monitors First Look
Rather than try to be something they aren't, the new NHT SuperZero 2.0 mini-monitors are just trying to do what a small speaker can - midrange and high frequency response leaving the bass to the sub. NHT has made choices with the SuperZero 2.0 to make them easy to place, easy to wall mount, and easy to afford all this without making promises (like chest thumping bass) that they can't possibly keep. The real story here, however, is the price. When the SuperZero speakers first came out in 1994, they were $250 a piece and were being hailed as a bargain. The NHT SuperZero 2.0s will run you less than $100 each. That's an impressive feat and one that should have a lot of people taking notice.
Bowers & Wilkins PM-1 Bookshelf Speaker First Look
When B&W comes out with a new speaker, people get excited. The PM-1 Bookshelf takes a lot from the 800 series while bringing some new things to the table. Like a Carbon Braced Tweeter, a Foam Damping Cap on their 5" Kevlar woofer, and a price point of $2,800 a pair. Are they priced for the impulse buyer? No. Well, unless you are Steve Jobs. But they are reasonable for the audiophile crowd.
Aperion Audio Verus Grand Bookshelf Speaker Review
The Aperion Audio Verus Grand Bookshelf speaker system is a high caliber compact system that is capable of delivering pristine fidelity. It’s a compact two-way design employing very high quality components such as 5” Kevlar woven phase plug woofer and 1” axially stabilized soft dome tweeter. These speakers sounded their best mated with a very musical and potent sub crossed over at 80Hz and this is how we recommend using to achieve full-range serious two-channel playback. In such an installation, the Aperion Verus were able to literally disappear leaving you with nothing but the music to get carried away in. These speakers performance per dollar ratio is so good that I fear Aperion has raised the bar too high for its competition. These aren’t just speakers, they are pieces of furniture that sound good. Considering their very liberal return policy, FREE 30 day home trial program and FREE shipping (both ways) I can’t say anything else other than “highly recommended!”
Wharfedale Jade Series Speakers Preview
Sound Import, LLC is now the exclusive distributor for Wharfedale speakers in the US. Today we got treated to a preview of the Jade Series loudspeakers which is a fairly robust line with seven models, including the Jade-1 and Jade-3 stand-mounted monitors, the Jade-5 and Jade-7 floorstanding towers, the Jade-C1 and Jade-C2 center-channel speakers and the Jade-SR wall-mountable surround speaker. Jade Series loudspeakers have an interesting pedigree. They are designed and built in the International Audio Group (IAG) ISO9001 facilities using standard CAD techniques, but a Wharfedale acoustic technician individually tests each driver and crossover. Finally, each finished loudspeaker is tested and certified to Wharfedale's reference standards.
Definitive Technology StudioMonitor Series Bookshelf Speakers Preview
When a company like Def Tech releases a new speaker, it is news. When it is an update to a speaker nearly 10 years in the making, it sets the Internets aflame. Everything from the driver choice to the aesthetics have been changed with the new StudioMonitor offerings. With three offerings (SM45, SM55, SM65) from $399 to $899 a pair, there is something here for everyone. With Def Tech's distinctive bi-polar focus, the top two have huge, top-mounted, bass radiators. It will be interesting to see how these perform in a real room.
Emotiva Launches new Pro Website and Active airmotiv Monitor Loudspeakers
Emotiva launched their pro line last week, and kicking off the brand, they released 3 self powered two-way loudspeakers designed for discriminating audiophiles in both the home and studio environment. All three models feature their own proprietary ribbon high frequency driver and bi-amplification and active crossovers. Each speaker features both unbalanced and balanced input connections. All speakers come with a 5-year transferable warranty and a freer 30 day in-home trial. These speakers look pretty awesome and we look forward to conducting a full review and host of measurements.
RBH Sound SX-61/R Bookshelf Speakers Review
When we fired up the RBH Sound SX-61/R Reference Bookshelf speakers, all that went out the proverbial window. For the next two hours we didn't do anything but shuffle in and out various discs and tracks and listen. And I mean "lose ourselves in the moment" listening. The SX-61/R's have that signature RBH Sound midrange that let's you hear things you just don't with most bookshelf systems. The speakers just dissolve into the room and you can detect every nuance in the music. Things like a snare drum played with brushes just become ear candy and kick drums reveal that decisive snap at the top. You can listen for hours and not get tired.
Trends Audio SA-10/R Speaker Preview
Given the price, the Trends Audio SA-10 may be a very interesting speaker. Trends is obviously a small company trying to break into audio world and their speaker aesthetics and website design display how bootstrapped they are. But that doesn't mean their speaker won't sound good. We are definitely intrigued by the apparent technology they claim to use in their speaker though we are guessing it will be best utilized in a near-field application like an office. Paired with one of their inexpensive hybrid tube amps, however, you might be looking at an affordable step into high end audio.
Axiom Audio VP160v3 Center Channel Loudspeaker Preview
Axiom Audio has added another center channel to round out its comprehensive center lineup. The VP160v3 (MSRP $570 shipped) is based on the well established W(T/M)W arrangement of drivers which is done to improve off-axis response compared to conventional horizontally mounted MTM designs. We like the direction Axiom Audio is taking with this new center channel. They built the product on a well established design principle to ensure good on and off-axis performance while also designing it to be a tonal match to their M60v3 floorstanding speakers. The VP160v3 is front ported and includes gel like rounded feet to help decouple it from panel resonances if placed inside an entertainment center. Initial feedback from forum users on the Axiom website and our forums indicate the VP160v3 is off to a successful start. Many users have made the upgrade from the VP150 claiming MUCH better vocal intelligibility on and off axis.
Paradigm Cinema Speakers Preview
Regardless of your needs, the Paradigm Cinema Speakers has a solution for you. Especially on a budget. With 5.1 systems starting at $1000 and tons of upgrade options, users should find all they need. From the satellite Cinema 100 speakers to the MTM Cinema 200 speakers, to the much larger MMTMM Cinema 400 speakers, all room sizes are pretty much covered. While the drivers don't change, the level of output and extension of bass does. Even those looking for a single speaker LCR have an option in the Cinema Trio. Add to that the compact Cinema Sub and Paradigm has set their sights directly at the budget conscious crowd that doesn't want to settle for poor sound.
EMP E55Ti Tower / E56Ci Center / E55WI Surround & ES1010i Subwoofer Review
When my sister-in-law tasked me to build her a home theater, she had three goals in mind: a system that would play cleanly at high output levels, be reasonably priced and “classy” looking. EMPtek Impression series of products seemed like the logical choice. We’ve had good experiences with their E55Ti towers and ES1010i subwoofer, so it was time to evaluate their new E56Ci 5 driver 3-way center channel and 4 driver bipole E55WI surround on-wall speaker system to get the big picture of perform of an entire EMP speaker configuration. This review explores a 7.1 EMP Impression Series speaker system’s performance while also offering valuable set-up and installation tips to ensure you too can achieve the three goals we set out for. Read the review to find out how good looks + good sound wins big WAF while also satisfying the discriminating Audioholic ear.
Monitor Audio GR-10 Bookshelf Speaker Review
Monitor Audio offers a very impressive package with the new GR-10 bookshelf speakers. They have managed to create an excellent sounding, finely crafted, and relatively affordable bookshelf speaker system that rivals many of their more costly competitors solutions. My only minor gripe is mostly a cosmetic one. I wish they would have rounded off the corners of the cabinets as I feel it would have made these speakers even more visually pleasing and possibly added a tad bit better imaging of the tweeters by reducing lateral baffle surface area and reducing tweeter diffraction. That said, the GR-10's are a must audition if a small, attractive and high performance bookshelf speaker system is what you are after. They are an excellent successor to their flagship discontinued Studio Series and should provide countless years of musical enjoyment to even the most critical listeners.
KEF LS50 Mini Monitor Preview
KEF spec's the LS50s down to 79Hz at -3dB and 47Hz at -6dB. This is pretty amazing response for a mini-monitor. The thing that makes the KEF LS50 mini-monitors so exciting, however, is the price. While $1500 a pair may be a bit extreme for some buyers for a near-field monitor, given the level of technology that has gone into them, the LS50s sound like an absolute steal to us. If you are looking for some high end speakers for your office, den, or other near-field environment, you'd be crazy not to give these a listen.
Triad Bookshelf Speakers for Nexus Q Preview
Did Triad cut corners to meet a certain price point with the Triad Bookshelf Speakers for Nexus Q? Sure. But we are still talking about a pair of Triad speaker for less than $400 a pair. That's a fraction of the price of others in the Triad stable. If you've always been interested in Triad but didn't have the money, this may be your opportunity. These could very well be the underground go-to recommendation for bookshelf speakers. We can't wait to get a review pair to see what Triad can do on a budget.
Definitive Technology StudioMonitor 65 Speakers Review
Definitive Technologies StudioMonitor 65 speakers make me want to listen to music. I like to ease into my reviews. Talk about build quality, what sets them apart, how they're made... And then move onto listening tests. These speakers make me want to jump right into telling you about the listening tests. No, actually, THESE speakers make me want to build a room onto my house just to listen to them. Obviously, I'm excited about these new speakers from Def Tech. They're billed as, and really developed to be, studio monitors, hence the name - StudioMonitor 65's. That means that at least one of the design goals was to create a speaker with enough dynamic range, fidelity, and finesse to be usable by recording studio professionals as a reference speaker for mixing and mastering music.
Emotiva Pro Airmotiv 5 Speakers Review
The Airmotiv 5's are Powered Studio Monitors and they're new from Emotiva Professional. The Airmotiv 5's are two-way powered speakers that can each receive either an RCA line level input, or a balanced XLR. There are three speakers in the Airmotiv studio monitor series, the 4, 5, and 6. We chose the middle of the pack, which has a single 5-1/4" polypropolene composite cone woofer and a 1" x 1-1/4" high-frequency folded-ribbon transducer. It's the ribbon tweeter that gives the speaker it's unique look and which also gives it it's signature sound. I recently had a small speaker shootout that involved many of the products I had in for review. This included bookshelf speakers, active studio monitors, passive monitors and some towers. That's an eclectic mix, but within that smorgasbord of boxes were these. And they rocked.
XTZ Divine 100.33 LCR Loudspeaker Preview
At an estimated (based on the Euro price) $2000 each, the XTZ Divine 100.33 LCR loudspeaker system isn't exactly an impulse buy. But considering the technology that is going into it, the price seems more than fair. With dual 6.5" ceramic midranges and a 1" tweeter, the ability to tune the bass and tweeter response, and gorgeous Walnut or Piano Black finishes, they are certainly eye catching. The 100.33 have only recently started shipping and we are not sure when they'll be coming to the states. When they do, we're hoping to get a pair in for review.
Triad Cinema Reference CR-1 Loudspeaker Preview
To mark Triad's 30 year anniversary they are releasing the most "capable" loudspeaker they have every made, the Cinema Reference CR-1. The CR-1 is not cheap at $15,000/ea, but it is designed specifically for large screening rooms or home theaters. Triad claims that the CR-1 has ample headroom to handle 15-30 seat rooms. At only 10" deep it is certainly thin to undertake such a large task, but that is because it is made to go behind an acoustic transparent screen or be mounted on the wall. It can also be placed out in the open on an optional stand. It sports a 15" bass driver, dual 8" midrange drivers, and a proprietary Air Motion tweeter. We don’t expect the CR-1 to fly off the shelf, but it could be the answer for someone looking for a discrete, large-room speaker with great dynamics. The CR-1 is slated to ship 4th quarter 2012.
Anthony Gallo Acoustics Strada 2 Speakers Preview
Anthony Gallo Acoustics (AGA) showed off its new Strada 2 bookshelf speakers. The Strada 2's look a lot like their predecessor and have the same sleek and modern look. They feature updated driver technology, and a new drive circuit for the proprietary CDT 3 tweeter. The Strada 2's dispersion/wave launch pattern has also been recalibrated to project what AGA calls a "holographic sound field" into the listening area. They claim the effect is designed to be mostly independent of room acoustics. In addition, Anthony Gallo increased the efficiency of the new Strada 2 by 95% and so it will play just as loudly as its previous incarnation with just half the input power.
Angel City Audio Trinity L/R & Center Loudspeaker Review
The first thing I noticed about the Angel City Audio Trinity L/R & Center loudspeaker system was the first-rate piano black finish. It was smooth and glossy with no imperfections. The Trinity L/R speakers sounded really sweet when I first heard them at the Audioholics GTG event and continued to do so once I got them into my audio room. I found that the cabinets were built extremely well and their measurements showed them also to be well-designed speakers. Although these speakers are not perfect and of course none are, I would definitely recommend them for a smaller room with some room treatment on the side walls. The three (LCR) speakers worked very nicely together which gave for an enjoyable movie and music experience.
Fluance XLHTB 5.0 Speaker System Preview
Given our experiences with the Fluance XL7F floorstanding speakers, we believe the XL7S surround (bookshelf) speakers and XL7C center speaker will be quality products. For those looking to make their first foray in home theater, looking for a present for a budding home theater nut, or just looking for a second system for their home, the Fluance XL Series speakers will easily fit the bill. Being able to mix and match the bookshelf, floorstanding, and center channel means that, no matter your room, you can find a configuration that you, and your spouse, can live with. Fluance put together a good looking, and nice sounding matching 5.0 system including their XL7F towers, XL7C center and XL7S surrounds for under $800. That's a pretty darn big deal.
Opalum Audio Flow .4810 Speakers Preview
When you think of Scandinavian design, you think either cheap or expensive. There really isn't any in-between. While pricing for the Opalum speakers hasn't been announced, we're betting it isn't going to be cheap. With integrated amps, a unique powering method, and gorgeous looks, we're sure the new Opalum speakers will turn heads. We're just not sure if they will open wallets. Honestly, we'd love to get our hands on a pair to see how they perform. If they sound half as good as they look, that will make them light-years better than many, similarly-styled offerings out there.
Polk Audio LSiM703 Bookshelf Speaker Review
Over the past decade or so Polk Audio has slowly shifted their focus from mid/upper tier audio to mid/lower tier products, which might make some wonder, "Do they still know how to make a knockout audiophile lineup?" As Polk has brought down the price points of their speakers, their reputation in the audiophile community has also steadily lessened as well. The Polk Audio LSiM series is their answer to the high end crowd. In the LSiM series there is only one bookshelf speaker, the 703, and at $749/ea it is well below what some consider "high end". So, I requested a pair of LSiM703's for review to see if the company still had it in them to make a truly audiophile grade product, but at a price the general public could afford (with a little time spent saving up, of course). In short, they've still got it. The LSiM703 is a great sounding and looking speaker, but it's size and bright presentation mean it isn't for everyone. Read on for a full review.
Emotiva Pro Stealth 6 & 8 Powered Studio Monitors Preview
Emotiva is a company well known for delivering high powered amplifiers at a budget friendly price. While Emotiva does offer speakers and subwoofers, we won't blame you if they're not the first name that pops into mind when it comes to reference grade studio monitors. Enter the Emotiva Pro Stealth line; consisting of two models, the Stealth 6 priced at $1,100/pair and the Stealth 8 priced at $1,500/pair, these monitors boast a relatively tight frequency response tolerance of +/- 1.75dB (on axis), active crossovers along with separate channels of amplification for each driver, and several interesting features to help them separate from the pack. How do these powered monitors stand up to a quick glance by Audioholics? Read on to find out.
Bowers & Wilkins 805 Maserati Edition Preview
The Bowers & Wilkins 805 Maserati Edition. If you are into high end audio, you've heard of Bowers & Wilkins. If you're into cars (or pay any attention to the cars the rich drive in movies), you've heard of Maserati. B&W have been putting their speakers in Maseratis for a while now. To celebrate the partnership, B&W has released a limited edition 805 speaker with Maserati styling cues. There is no indication that there are any changes to the internal components so the Maserati Edition should sound the same as the regular 805s. They'll just look a lot better.
Boston Acoustics A225C Center Channel Review
The Boston Acoustics A225C matches the good looks and excellent build quality of the rest of the Boston Acoustics A-Series, including the A360 floorstanding loudspeaker we reviewed. This is a smooth sounding center channel with very good build quality and great looks. Although there are a few limitations, this center speaker delivers a great balance of form and function at a reasonable price point. Check out our full review to get a clear picture on its performance.
Genelec G Series Speakers and F Series Active Subwoofers
Genelec's G Series active two-way speakers have a seamless design that flows gently from the woofer to the tweeter. Genelec chose the smooth design to reduce acoustic reflections that can interfere, or diffract, the sound. Specifically, the tweeter is surrounded by a Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW), and it's designed to match the frequency response and directivity characteristics of both drivers. The goal is smooth frequency response both on-axis and off-axis.
Definitive Technologies Incline Desktop Speakers Preview
The Def Tech Incline powered desktop speakers are a first for the company. On the front the Inclines have a 3/4" silk dome tweeter, a 3.5" midrange, and a 4" passive radiator. The back as a 1.5" driver that is "full range" and will work if you have a boundary (wall) behind you or if you are in an open space. They connect to your computer via USB or your portable device via 3.5mm or even you Blu-ray player via optical input. You can add a subwoofer and the Def Tech Inclines will sense the connection and engage a crossover. If you are a fan of the classic Def Tech look, you're going to love the new Def Tech Incline powered desktop speaker. Coming soon at $399 a pair.
Status Acoustics Granite Bookshelf Speakers Preview
We got a chance to listen to Status Acoustics' new bookshelf speaker system and they sounded every bit as good as they looked! The cabinets are made out of actual granite (weighing a whopping 53lbs to 70lbs each, depending on finish) and is the most dense, inert speaker enclosure we've ever seen or even heard of. We've seen speakers made form glass, plexi, composite materials and carbon fiber. I've never seen anything like this. Surprisingly, granite, like everything else, actually rings. To kill that and make it completely inert, Status Acoustics used a layer of dampening material, then a layer of aluminum, and then another layer of dampening material. The idea was to make this the most inert box you could get. Of course all top notch Status parts are used throughout including their beryllium midrange and Scan Speak tweeter.
KEF X300A Powered Speakers Review
I've been listening to and reviewing speakers like these KEF X300A's for quite some time. In fact, a lot of bookshelf speakers as well as many powered monitors come across my desk—literally. Well, not literally. They're more or less next to my desk. On stands. The point is—I've listened to a lot of these speakers and I know what I like. I love solid bass, but it doesn't have to sound like a subwoofer is in the room. It just has to be punchy, you know? Where it hits you right in the chest. If your speakers do that, you've got bass pretty much covered. As for highs, what you're listening for is clarity without that brittleness that can come from a tweeter that not integrated well or receiving signal through a poorly thought-out crossover. The KEF X300A's seem to have it all.
Audioengine 2+ Premium Powered Desktop Speakers Preview
If you wanted a direct connection from your computer to your Audioengine A2 speakers, the $249 A2+ have what you need. While they are still lacking a headphone output (maybe they are saving that for the A2++), the USB connection is now available. For those that wanted additional bass out of their A2 speakers, the A2+ now have a variable output for adding a sub. Basically it looks like Audioengine read all the reviews their products have gotten and took the biggest complaints and fixed them with the A2+. That just sounds like good business to us. If you are looking for "real" speakers for your desk and you're on a budget, the A2+ should definitely be on your list.
Audioengine 2+ Powered Desktop Speakers Review
Audioengine has made a name for themselves with small, self-powered desktop speakers whose size defies their sound. The first reaction most people have to Audioengine speakers is "Wow", and it is well deserved. For a lot of people, their first hint as to how much better audio can sound is when they upgrade their computer's speakers. Going from their monitor's speakers to those satellite/bass modules is the first step, but the next is often Audioengine. We recently reviewed the Audioengine 5+ speakers and now it is time to look at the smaller, and more affordable, 2+ speakers.
THIEL Audio TM3 Bookshelf Speaker Preview
The TM3 represents a fresh start for industry veteran Thiel Audio. The first loudspeaker from what is expected to be a full lineup, the TM3 is the brainchild of Thiel's new director of product development, Mark Mason. With a projected MSRP of $2,999, the TM3 has a high bar to meet, both in terms of available competition and for exceeding the legacy of Jim Thiel. Suffice it to say, we have high expectations.
Aperion Audio Allaire Bluetooth Bookshelf Speakers Preview
Aperion Audio's new Allaire Bluetooth is a different kind of wireless speaker. A conventional pair of bookshelf speakers as opposed to the usual portable single box solution, they are billed as a "go anywhere" stereo setup. Priced at $399/pair, the Allaire's seem to bring a lot to the table including including 50W of class D power per speaker, Bluetooth connectivity as well as optical digital and analog inputs, and of course the speakers themselves. What other goodies does Aperion have up their sleeves? Keep reading to find out.
NHT 2.1 Super Stereo Loudspeaker System Review
What happens when you add NHT's Super 8 subwoofer to their legendary SuperZero bookshelf speakers? You get the Super Stereo system: a compact, high quality 2.1 setup perfect for small rooms. The best part? The MSRP is a very reasonable $600 and it's currently available for $499. How does this decor & budget friendly system rate with the Audioholics? Keep reading to find out and be sure to watch our Video Review to enjoy the beauty of these babies while also get our take on the listening experience.
Thonet & Vander Hoch Powered Bookshelf Speaker Review
Thonet & Vander Hoch Bookshelf Speakers may look like Axiom M22s but they are less than half the price and they are self powered. While they don't have the best bass extension, they don't distort due to a well executed high-pass filter. The sound of these speakers can be tailored to your liking by the bass and treble controls, they have two inputs, and can play loud. What really stuck us, however, was the imaging and off axis response. In nearfield, they were positively holographic. At $200, these are an easy recommendation for an office or a second system.
DD Audio Loudspeaker Lineup Preview
DD Audio is a company primarily known for their presence in the mobile audio space, but these days they've got their sights set on the home audio market. Their new loudspeaker lineup consists of a two way bookshelf speaker, a powered monitor, an on-wall speaker, an in-wall/in-ceiling speaker, and a powered subwoofer. With budget friendly prices, the question becomes: what does the new kid on the block have to offer? Keep reading to find out.
NHT Classic Three Bookshelf Loudspeaker Review

Status Acoustics Voce Fina Bookshelf Speaker Review
RBH Sound has upped the ante by releasing a speaker product that truly lives up to the Status Acoustics moniker with a superbly crafted speaker system constructed of solid granite. The Voce Fina is a two-way featuring a 6.5” Beryllium / Aluminum alloy phase plug driver and 1” soft dome Scan Speak 9500 tweeter. They are undoubtedly some of the finest sounding bookshelf loudspeakers I’ve ever had the fortune of listening to. They exhibited an uncanny ability of disappearing into the room and sounding much larger than their diminutive size suggests. If you’re looking for two-channel nirvana from a price no object speaker system that sounds as good as it looks, the Status Acoustics Voce Fina will take you there.
Aperion Audio Allaire Bluetooth / Bravus II 8D Powered Wireless Subwoofer System Review
Generally speaking, Bluetooth is associated with cheap, substandard portable speakers; however, the folks at Aperion are proving that doesn't have to be the case. They're now offering their Allaire Bluetooth bookshelf speakers and Bravus II 8D subwoofer as a package deal, along with one special ingredient: HAL. What does HAL do? He creates a wireless connection between the Allaire speakers and the Bravus subwoofer, allowing for a compact 2.1 system without the clutter. Want to know more? Click to keep reading.
XTZ Sound Cinema Series (M6, S5, Subx12) Loudspeakers Preview
XTZ Sound's Cinema Series isn't another "me too" surround system. Among other things, XTZ's Cinema lineup boasts trapezoidal cabinetry for a unique look, not to mention some unconventional driver layouts including a quad-tweeter array. The line consists of two speakers, the M6 LCR and S5 surround speaker, as well as two subwoofers, the SUB 1X12 and the massive SUB 3X12, which as the name suggests features a trio of 12" woofers in a massive vented cabinet. Check out the CEA2010 data on these new subs. Impressive, Most Impressive!
SVS Ultra Bookshelf Speakers Review
The SVS Ultra is a two-way ported bookshelf speaker with a 6.5” bass driver and 1” metal dome tweeter retailing for just under $1k/pair. Although SVS is widely known for subwoofers, today we look to see if the Ultra bookshelf speakers can change that perception and deliver the same legendary performance at the other end of the frequency spectrum. Impeccable build quality and aesthetics is only part of their story. SVS applies NRC science not to cheapen a product but to improve its measured performance and subjective listening experience. To say we were impressed is an understatement but do they live up to the SVS badge? Read on to find out.
Triad Speakers Bronze LR-H Dolby Atmos Speakers Preview
We have to admit that we didn't think we'd see the name Triad associated with Atmos quite so quickly. Triad Speakers offer a Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze line of in-room speakers - the Bronze being the entry level. To this speaker, they've decided to add a top-mounted Atmos unit. While we couldn't find a price for the original Bronze LCRs (the speakers we believe these Atmos speakers are based off of), the Silver models are $850 each. The new Bronze LR-H Atmos speakers will cost $1000 each. The Atmos top unit will contain four, 2" full-range ScanSpeak drivers to yield a tighter and more controlled dispersion pattern and to increase power handling.
JBL Pro 7 Series Master Reference Monitors Preview
JBL Professional's new 7 Series monitors feature trickle down technology from the $20,000 M2 Master Reference Monitor, including the Image Control Waveguide. The line consists of two loudspeakers, the LSR705i, a compact 2-way speaker with a 5" woofer, and the LSR708i, a larger monitor boasting an 8" woofer. Both models are passive to save size and weight, in addition to centralizing power distribution. Unfortunately, the 7 Series will not be available for individual purchase, and are only available as part of a complete package.
XTZ Cinema S2 "Almost" Atmos Height Speaker Preview
XTZ Sound has just added a new speaker to their venerable Cinema lineup. They are calling it their S2 height speaker but note it doesn’t have the “Atmos” moniker. That’s because XTZ didn’t pay the licensing fee to Dolby to use their name. Kudos to XTZ for not taking the blue pill on this one and focusing the budget of this product on the quality of the drivers and crossover components instead of a licensing fee and crossover tech that has been proven to be unnecessary to create the illusion of height. The S2 offers versatile placement options for ceiling or wall mounting or placing on top of companion speakers firing up at the ceiling to call the Transformers on Cybertron.
Legacy Audio Studio HD Bookshelf Speaker Review
The Legacy Audio Studio HD bookshelf speakers are shocking. Usually when someone talks about an American, hand-crafted speaker with amazing high-frequency detail (thanks to a unique tweeter), a top-of-the-line cabinet, and high-end finish options, you start to imagine the price tag going up, and up, and up...but the Studio HD might just surprise you. We found them to offer the type of sound quality that lives up to Legacy's legendary build quality. Did I like these speakers? Well, lets just say I did lose a lot of sleep over them. Read on to learn all about these intoxicating speakers and check out our YouTube video review.
RBH MC-4C Bookshelf Speaker Review
The RBH MC-4C are a high-performance speaker in a very compact package. They address the internal conflict in many of us; we want high-quality sound, but would rather not have to accommodate huge speakers to get it. Too often, small speakers represent a big compromise in sound. However, with the RBH MC-4C, good things do come in small packages. They look great, measure well, and most importantly excel sonically. Read our review and check out our YouTube video on the RBH MC-4C speakers.
XTZ Sound Bookshelf Speaker Comparison (93, 95 and 99 Series)
Swedish audio manufacturer, XTZ Sound in Balance, makes a bit of everything. When they are not making amplifiers, CD players, cables, measurement systems, DSP, and earphones, they are making speakers. Today we will focus on several of the bookshelf speaker product lines ranging from their 93,95 and 99 series of products which look pretty interesting. XTZ focuses on naturalness of sound reproduction, neutral/flat frequency response in their products and based on quality parts and apparent great build quality, we have little reason to doubt their design goals.

Dayton Audio B452-AIR Bookshelf and C452-AIR Center Speaker Review

In this review, we look at the least expensive speakers that Audioholics has ever covered, the Dayton Audio B452-AIR bookshelf and C452-AIR center. Read our review to see why you don't need to spend thousands of dollars or even hundreds of dollars to get a better sound.
Polk T15 Bookshelf Speaker Review
In this review, we look at the Polk T15 bookshelf speakers, which are among the more affordable choices out there at $100 per pair ($69/pr on sale right now). Loudspeaker manufacturing giant Polk Audio has the resources to engineer a good sounding low-cost speaker, but the question is what approach would they take? Polk pulls out a few tricks to optimize this speaker for the conditions that a low-cost bookshelf speaker will likely be used in, which are typically not the perfect placement and setting that hi-fi speakers usually require for great sound. Read our review to see what Polk has done to make the T15 bookshelf speakers produce audiophile sound in imperfect circumstances.

With the recently released MK402 bookshelf speaker, Dayton Audio answers the challenge for a small bookshelf speaker that has significant bass extension and is also very inexpensive. The MK402, along with its corresponding MK442 center speaker, manages this engineering feat, but what else can these little over-achievers do? The answers to that question surprised us but you will have read our review of these budget wonders to find out.

Monoprice MP-65RT Bookshelf Speaker Review
How low in price can a full-size bookshelf speaker go yet still sound good? Monoprice tries to answer that question with the MP-65RT, which, at an impossible $50 per pair price point ($40 on sale), has to be the least expensive speaker in history to sport a ribbon tweeter. However, the inclusion of a ribbon tweeter in such an inexpensive speaker doesn't mean the rest of the speaker isn't good. Read our review of the MP-65RT Ribbon Bookshelf speaker to find out how Monoprice managed to make it all work at such a low cost.
Atlantic Technology LCR2 Compact Speaker Preview
Atlantic Technology has introduced its new LCR2 ultra compact speakers in white or high-gloss black finish for a wide variety of audio and home theater applications. They seem to be going after the high value ultra compact form factor that so many ID companies already have successfully capitalized on for quite some time. At $200/ea and given their reputation, we'd have to say Atlantic Technology has just offered a compelling alternative to the already crowded ID marketplace. What do you think?

Monoprice Monolith K-BᾹS Bookshelf Speakers Review
The new Monolith K-BAS bookshelf speakers from Monoprice achieve a rare feat for their price and size: true sub 50 Hz bass extension. RBH Sound Signature SE/R Series Review
RBH Sound's Signature Series represents their "cream of the crop" in loudspeaker design. We took a pair of 61-SE/R and 661-SE/R center channel for a spin to see how they performed. This series of product can be found in many of our reference systems for good reason - they rock!
Speaker Face Off IV - Battle of the Budget Bookshelf's
Over the past few years there has been much talk about budget speakers. With this in mind, we decided to conduct a bookshelf speaker shoot out. We selected four different brands of speakers all under $300/pr.
Triad Gold MiniMonitor Loudspeaker Review
Triad Speakers is located in Portland, Oregon, home of some of the best microbrewery beers in the US. Nestled between the numerous quality breweries, tucked away very close to downtown Portland is the home of a speaker manufacturer who applies craftsmanship and exceptional build quality to every speaker they make. Perhaps one of Triad’s most redeeming qualifications is that they do not covet their drivers with implied origins but instead proudly list the actual manufacturers and model numbers.
Von Schweikert Audio VR-1 Speaker Review
The following review is for Von Schweikert Audio's VR-1 Reference Studio Monitors. Two pairs of VR-1 speakers were thoroughly listened to and evaluated in bookshelf, and surround applications for approximately four months on a variety of different reference systems, each with unique room acoustics. Some of the technical information was provided by the manufacturer and additional information can be found on their site at www.VonSchweikert.com . Performance measurements were conducted by Audioholics using Sencore and LMS test equipment.
B&W CM1 Loudspeaker Review
Bowers & Wilkins, Ltd. is a well recognized name among audiophiles and classical music aficionados. The B&W 800 series loudspeakers have long been considered preeminent studio monitors for orchestral recording sessions dating back to the launch of the original 801 in 1979. The list of recording labels and studios that have used 800 series monitors includes Philips, Decca Records, Deutsche Grammophon, and EMI’s Abbey Road Studios where, incidentally, the latest Star Wars movie, Revenge of the Sith was recorded and mixed using B&W loudspeakers. Because of the prominent use for orchestral recording, the speakers are often favored amongst avid orchestral listeners with the intent of replicating the recording session as close as possible by using the same speakers for reproduction as were used in production.
RBH Signature Series 41-SE Speaker Review
Since 1976, RBH Sound has been designing, engineering and crafting high-performance loudspeaker systems that provide the tools for superior acoustic reproduction at sensible prices. From their inception, RBH's distinguishing quality was the implementation of aluminum and other exotic driver materials in their packages, coupled with soft dome or metal dome tweeters depending on application and budget..
Onix x-ls Bookshelf Loudspeaker Review
Not long ago, Gene offered me the opportunity to review a first production of a new loudspeaker system by AV123. I jumped at the opportunity as I’d seen their name pop up in a number of online forums and read the reviews of some of their other products. I was curious to see what the chatter was all about. Soon thereafter, The Onix x-ls, a 2-way, vented cabinet system, arrived.
Aperion Audio Intimus 632-LR Loudspeaker Review
We’ve been big fans of several direct-to-consumer loudspeaker manufacturers - but only after they proved to us that their products held up against comparable models by more mainstream manufacturers. Last year Aperion Audio joined our recommended list by producing a good bang-for-the-buck product with the Intimus 5.1 system (comprised of four 532-LRs a 532-C and S-8 powered subwoofer). This year we wanted to hear what their newer, larger products had to offer in terms of quality and performance.
Phase Tech CI-20VII In-wall Speakers Review
I have reviewed many in-wall and in-ceiling speaker systems during the past year, more than any other A/V product. This is because I have the ability to install them without destroying my living room walls in the process. To test in-wall speakers I built 'portable' walls that are constructed like a typical residential wall, with studs spaced 16" apart on-center and covered with 0.5" drywall. The walls are 32" wide and stand 48" tall and are large enough to simulate a real wall, but portable enough to move from my workshop into my listening room without sustaining a back injury.
Status Acoustics Decimo Review
Speaker companies are a dime a dozen these days in a market flooded with gimmicky products that claim improved fidelity via unverifiable audio tweaks or using exotic cables to achieve their full potential. It is a rarity to find a company that doesn't give into these tactics to market a substandard product. Instead Status Acoustics took the high road by building these no nonsense speakers with some of the finest components available making them to this day a benchmark product unrivaled in performance.
Mi-Horn VHT Series Loudspeaker System Review
Musical Industry (MI) was founded November, 2002. Their objective is the pursuit of lower cost sound improvements in hi-end audio. Upon a quick glance at their site, I must admit to a high level of skepticism. Being the objectivist I am, I simply find little value in ancillary devices or tweaks that have little basis in provable sciences. But, there are those audiophiles that would care less one way or the other so long as higher fidelity is promised, even if its not delivered, they will think they can hear it and be happy nonetheless.
Artison Sketch LCR Flat Panel Speakers Review
We got our first "up close and personal" look at Artison's products back at the 2004 CEDIA convention. Curt Chrisholm of Velodyne introduced us to these custom flat panel speakers (it was the Portrait model we first saw and heard.) The concept of a pair of flat panels that also sported a "DualMono" center channel intrigued us and we put it on our list to eventually contact them and arrange for a review. While it took us more than a year to do so, we were pleased to be able to take a closer look at Artison's new Sketch LCR loudspeakers.
Atlantic Technology System 4200e Review
Let me start by saying that I truly love reviewing loudspeakers. I really do. However, I had just completed reviewing several loudspeaker systems over the last couple of months and the thought of one more brought mixed emotions. I'm into new equipment as much as the next guy, but unpacking and repacking multiple boxes is not the part we relish. It was late in the evening and I was kind of worn out by the time I finally got the 4200e speakers & sub connected to my reference system.
Dynaudio Audience 52-SE Loudspeaker Review
Over the years I have heard many great things about Dynaudio speakers, particularly the quality of their drivers which up till this point I only knew that they looked really good and were very expensive. You could imagine my level of enthusiasm when Dynaudio decided to send me a pair of their speakers for review. Enter the Audience 52-SE. These speakers were based on the original 52 design, but with upgrades in crossover components and drive units.
RBH Sound Signature 61-SE Loudspeaker Review
Aluminum must be bullet proof. At least that has been my experience when dealing with speakers from RBH Sound, Inc. My first impression of this company was made when I demoed the fabulous 1010-SEP subwoofer from their Signature series. I remember saying to myself, how can (2) two 10 inch woofers play so much clean, articulate, deep musical bass? The answer lies in the excellent proprietary aluminum cone woofers with powerful motor structures developed by RBH Sound. Such is the case with the new Signature 61-SE bookshelf loudspeakers.
Speaker Face-Off III: High End Bookshelves
You may be puzzled when you look at this Loudspeaker Face Off Review and notice that there are brands and models of Loudspeakers ranging drastically in price and size. There are reasons to our madness as to why we choose such a diverse range of Loudspeakers to review: 1) These were the speakers available to us for the review. 2) Most importantly, price and size don't always dictate quality. So on with the Face Off we say, and bring on the music!
Swans S200A Multimedia Speakers
It wasn’t so long ago that I was researching my first “real” set of speakers. At the time, there were a number of brands that caught my attention. Swans was one of them. But by the time I was ready to buy, they had kind of fallen off the radar and I ended up with another Internet direct brand. When I saw them at CEDIA last year, I noticed one of our reviews for a different product printed up and sitting on their desk (apparently one of their staff picked it up at another booth) I pointed at it and said, “That’s us.” Well, one thing led to another and now I’m looking at a set of their “hi-end” multimedia speakers.
NHT Classic 2 Speaker System Review
They say perfect objectivity is an unrealistic goal, though fairness is not. I must admit I’m a little biased when it comes to NHT speakers, since they were my first real hi-fi speakers. I almost bought a used pair of NHT Super-Twos, but their new Super Audio line had just been released, so I bought the ST-4s instead. NHT has implemented some clever ideas, bringing high-end sound to the budget-minded people like me. Super Audio is where NHT brought its aluminum-dome tweeters and a separate enclosure design to its ST-4. These are ideas that would be improved upon in the Classic series.
B&W 603 S2 speakers

Monitor Audio Silver 5i speakers
Speaker Face-off 2: Large Bookshelf Speakers
This speaker face off review focuses on mid priced Tower type speakers ($900/pair - $1400/pair), which may be used for stereo listening and/or home theater applications. Although there is a price delta of $500 between the cheapest and most expensive speakers in the review, we feel that is not as big of an issue as price does not always reflect better quality.
Pioneer Pure Malt Speaker Review
"I'll have a pair of those Pioneer's, straight up!" That was my first thought when Pioneer asked if I would be interested in reviewing a pair of their Pure Malt Speakers, whose cabinets are made from 50 year old retired malt whiskey barrels. Apparently Pioneer has sold these speakers for years in Japan, and last year began to offer them for sale in the USA exclusively via their website. I have never thought of Pioneer as a speaker company. I am aware that they have made speakers for years, but to be honest, I have never considered them when shopping for speakers. But how can I resist the opportunity to audition what appeared to me to be a unique custom product such as these?
HSU Research HB-1 Bookshelf Speaker Review
When a company like HSU Research with a reputation for making quality products (in this case subs) at extremely affordable prices announces a new product, we all sit up at attention. The HB-1 is a horn loaded bookshelf specifically made to fill large rooms. It is designed to be crossed over at 80 Hz which mean that it has the ability to seamlessly blend with a quality subwoofer or two. What we have here is a very good speaker for an entry level system. And by entry level I mean would trounce nearly any other system that people would consider to be “entry”. Easy to setup, easy to power, and easy on the wallet. Paired with one of HSU Research’s subs and you’ve got a winning combination.
DALI Mentor 1 Bookshelf Loudspeaker Review
The DALI Mentor 1 is a fine sounding speaker system in a neat little package. They are best suited for small to medium sized rooms and highly recommended to be utilized with a dedicated subwoofer. The tweeter array in the Mentor 1’s is exceptionally good, never sounding compressed or strained. If what you are after is a compact, attractive, well-built speaker system that will reveal all of the subtleties of your recordings, then the DALI Mentor 1’s should be added to your auditioning shortlist. They score big in the WAF department, play nicely with virtually any decent amplifier or receiver on the market, and will likely impress any audiophile with their excellent imaging and 3D spatiality. So do your best to pair them with good electronics, an acoustically neutral listening room, and quality source material and be prepared to be rewarded with a level of detail and transparency not typically found in many competitor speaker systems.
Jamo C803 Bookshelf Speaker Review
The quality of loudspeakers being produced by most companies these days is pretty good. Rarely does a set of speakers come in for review that just sound awful. Each pair generally has strengths and weaknesses, but overall, I have found that there are many quality products out there to choose from. You can almost always find a speaker that combines good performance with a size, shape and aesthetic appeal that suits your personal taste in most any price range. With that being said, it has been a while since a product just blew my socks off. Enter the Jamo C 803 bookshelf speakers.
Usher Audio S-520 Bookshelf Speaker Review
After spending some time with these speakers, I’m convinced that Usher Audio is looking to dispel the idea that you need to search the Internet for quality bookshelf speakers at a reasonable price. The build quality is without equal, the component quality rivals (and bests) speakers much more expensive, and the sound if phenomenal. As far as I’m concerned, these are THE budget bookshelf speakers to beat.
RBH Sound MC-6C Bookshelf Speaker Review
The RBH Sound MC-6C speaker system has certainly exceeded my expectations and proved that, like a fine wine, a product line can get better overtime. The fact that the MC-6C’s could outgun pricier speakers on the market is a testament to a speaker company not so concerned with profit margins as much as they are with bringing a high performance product to market.
Ascend Acoustics Sierra-1 Bookshelf Speaker Review
If I had to describe it in a word, that word would be "pandemonium." That was what seemed to be happening in the audiophile community as Ascend Acoustics announced their new "reference" bookshelf speakers, the Sierra-1's. Long time lovers of the brand were putting their beloved speakers up for sale with the Sierra-1's on pre-order. Sight unseen, ear unheard, the Sierra's were being compared and debated against speakers many times their price. As bookshelf speakers go, they aren't the cheapest but this is definitely a case of "you get what you pay for." And you're getting a lot. The bass and treble extension seems out of place in the same box. Usually you hope for one or the other. In this case, you get both and in a bookshelf package.
Bookshelf Speaker Faceoff 2007
The gloves come off as Audioholics takes on eight pairs of bookshelf speakers priced from $200 - $1800 a pair and tells you who leads the pack and who you should send packing. While there may not be consensus, the four reviewers who took these speakers to task have some common opinions where it counts. Even when they agree to disagree, the results are informative and eye-opening. We also took a suite of measurements on each speaker at 1 meter (on-axis only as our time was limited) and these graphs are included towards the end of the shootout.
Usher S-520 Review Addendum: Woofer Bottoming Out Issue
We recently reviewed the Usher S-520 bookshelf speaker system and found them to be an uncommonly good value because of their fidelity, build quality, and aesthetics. Just as we were gearing up to ship these speakers back to the manufacturer, Musikmatters – US Distributor of Usher Audio products, requested that we retest these speakers after replacing the woofers since we reported the woofers were susceptible to bottoming out during large bass transients in our face off review. Check out our results.

Usher Audio Be-718 Tiny Dancer Speaker Review
If you are on the market for a dynamic pair of compact speakers with a high Spouse Acceptance Factor (SAF), dynamic audio performance on par with speakers twice their price, and an ability to create a sound image nearly on par with full sized speakers, than I urge you to consider the Usher Audio Be-718 Tiny Dancer speakers seriously. They are absolutely gorgeous, with the piano gloss center section and beautiful wood side panels making them right at home in a medium sized den with a tube amplifier softening that hard edge while sipping a 20 year old brandy. The Be-718 Tiny Dancer’s are not without peer, as there are other bookshelves, and even some floor standing speakers that perform admirably at or near this price point, but the combination of sturdy construction, excellent engineering, innovative tweeter design and implementation, and performance per dollar spent put these substantial sound boxes into the “if this is your price range, put these on your short list of speakers to audition” checkbox. It was truly my pleasure to review these highly capable pair of speakers with décor friendly appeal, and musicality nearly beyond reproach.
RBH Sound TK-5C Bookshelf Speaker System Review
The RBH Sound TK-5Cs were top notch performers, sounding BIGGER than they looked without faltering at high SPL levels. If you can't find an RBH dealer in your area, check out the EMP EF30s which are similar in performance but almost $150 cheaper through Audiogurus.
Eventus Audio Lysithea $28,000 Speakers
Eventus Audio premiered their new Lysithea three-way loudspeakers which utilizes a modified version of the patented Simulated Anechoic Cabinet Construction [SACC] technology. The overall design is similar to a large stand mounted monitor; however, in place of a stand is an elegantly designed base with a captive low frequency driver. The crossover is located outside of the cabinet in the back of the loudspeaker and is damp-mounted. The crossover typology comes from the Eventus Audio's Nebula. A ring radiator tweeter and 5-inch carbon fiber cone midrange mate with a 7.5-inch carbon fiber woofer to produce frequencies from 40Hz to 45kHz. The weight is a staggering 99 lbs each, and the price is an even more staggering $28,000. Dimensions are 42" x 12" x 21.5" (HxWxD).
Totem Limited Edition One Bookshelf Speakers
Totem debuted their Limited Edition One bookshelf speaker system at their Venetian demo suite. With only 2000 units being produced and retailing for $3595/pair they are certainly targeted for the audiophile that demands an exclusive speaker system. These speakers had a very fluidic sound characteristic with detailed and airy highs while conveying the intimacy that only a top quality bookshelf speaker can deliver.
Emotiva ER 5.0 Speaker System Review
Emotiva, the maker of affordable amps and processors, has stepped into the speaker world in a big way. With the help of the famous loudspeaker designer Vance Dickason, they have put together a 5.0 package at a price that seems almost too good to be true. These speakers sound great, the dipole surrounds are amazing, and the boundary and tweeter adjustments mean that they'll fit almost any room. The downside? Just look at them…
MB Quart Alexxa B-One Bookshelf Speaker Review
Could the MB Quart Alexxa B-One speakers be manufactured in Hades? I ask this because, as I am sure you know, the devil is in the details and detail is what these speakers are all about. They present a very detailed reproduction of music, and fit and finish is top notch. But fear not, I will not be forced to consider damnation after all, as the Alexxas are not the handiwork of Beelzebub, but rather that of a storied team of engineers in Germany.
Axiom Audio Millenia M3 Garage Speakers
Axiom Audio announced a new Millennia "Garage" speaker, which is a version of their popular M3 v2 speaker. The speaker comes with a diamond-plate styled enclosure and has the same performance and specifications as the traditional M3 v2 speaker. The Millennia "Garage" speaker supports up to 175 watts of maximum power and has a frequency response of 60-22 kHz (+/-3dB) with an in-room sensitivity rating of 92 db SPL @ 1W/1m.
Axiom Audio Epic Midi 400 Speakers Review
Axiom Audio's Epic Midi system is a great "home theater-in-a-box killer" that starts at just $1338 and is built around the small M2 (v2) speakers. To get the most out of it, however, you'd want to opt for the much more sophisticated and powerful EP400 subwoofer - a $600+ premium that lands the system among stiff competition in the ~$2000 5.1 home theater speaker market. While expensive, the EP400 was the most impressive part of this system and stole the show as it certainly outperformed the expectations we had for what an 8-inch subwoofer could do.
Budget Bookshelf Speaker Shootout 2009
Budget bookshelf speakers are a great first step into the world of high fidelity. But which ones to choose? A few of our forum members decided to take on the daunting task of comparing some of the more popular (and available) affordable bookshelf speakers. The list included Yamaha NS-6490, Polk Audio R15, Behringer B2030P, Yamaha NS-333, Aperion Audio Intimus 4B, Infinity Primus P162, EMP EF30, and more! The results may surprise you as spending more money doesn't always equate to better performance.
Thiel SCS4 Bookshelf Speaker Review
The Thiel SCS4 speaker system has certainly met my expectations for performance, and the amount of low end exceeded it. The SCS4 is a well thought out and well made effort. The materials and workmanship are both first class. The front baffle and speaker are cosmetically a thing of beauty, and the overall construction is excellent. The average user will find this system suitable for all but the largest rooms, and biggest amplifiers. If you have limited space, and the wife will not let you buy that floor standing speaker you really want, the Thiel SCS4’s can provide you with years of excellent sound and aesthetics to please the true audiophile in you.
Infinity Primus P162 Bookshelf Speaker Review
The Infinity Primus P162 Bookshelf speakers have been selling like hotcakes at the Audioholics store - that's just a fact. They've got a lot of buzz right now. If I was designing a set of budget bookshelf speakers and I wanted to sell, I'd focus on a few things. Great center image, wide soundstage, and the lowest response I could muster. Well, Infinity hit the nail on the head with this one. These are the perfect entry level speakers.
Elemental Designs W6-6TC Bookshelf Gets Wood
The W6-6TC speakers are a joint venture with Swan Loudspeakers and have definitely benefited from the partnership. They feature a 1.5" silk dome tweeter and a 6.75" pressed poly cone midrange driver. The midrange has a whopping 3" voice coil! The W6-6TC’s offer a quoted response from 43 Hz-20 kHz, reaching well within the range of some tower speakers at a fairly compact size. These speakers were designed with 2.0 and 2.1 reference listening systems in mind. For a limited time, Audioholics readers can get over 25% off! See the article for details.
Snell LCR7 XL 30th Anniversary Bookshelf Speaker
The LCR7 XLs are one of their premier speakers that feature a design by Snell Chief Engineer Joe D’Appolito memorializing the 30th anniversary of Snell Acoustics. Utilizing a D'Appolito array (or Mid-Tweet-Mid, MTM for short, design) and the renown SEAS XL drivers, the LCR7 XL represent the pinnacle of what you can achieve through components and experience. At $6000 a pair, they certainly seem to be sparing no expense. Performance-wise, they are tops with a fantastically clear high end and nearly limitless power handling. These are speakers you can drive practically until your amp gives out since they seem to have no real upper limit.
Aperion Audio Intimus 5B Bookshelf Speaker Review
There is little not to like about the Intimus 5B bookshelf speaker system. The Intimus 5Bs have the ability to disappear into a room thanks to their excellent imaging capabilities and very detailed open sound. Aperion Audio proved in droves that they could combine great sound, aesthetics (score one for the wives) and build quality into a compact package that most budding audiophiles can afford. Their masterfully executed fit and finish of the cabinetry make these pieces of furniture that just happen to sound really good. Mated with a powered subwoofer, you’ve got audiophile performance and aesthetics on the cheap. Considering their very liberal return policy, FREE 30 day home trail program and FREE shipping (both ways) I can’t say anything else other than “highly recommended!”
Elemental Designs A6-6T6 Center Channel Speaker First Look
The eD A6-6T6 Center is a very unique speaker. At 10" high and 40" wide, it certainly isn't going to fit in everyone's systems. But for those that can swing it, they are going to get a speaker that promises vocals and center information with an authority that smaller centers just can't touch.

The new Paradigm Shift Active Atom A2 is a powered bookshelf/tabletop speaker designed to be used alone, as a left/right audio system or in stereo pairs with devices such as iPods and other music players, desktop computers, home DJ decks, videogame consoles and so much more. The A2 is bi-amped with 100 watts of power per speaker and designed and engineered to the exacting standards that Paradigm products are known. MartinLogan Motion 15 / LX16 Bookshelf Speaker Review
MartinLogan is typically known for their hybrid-electrostatic loudspeakers; however, they are now trying their hand at more traditional speakers, with a twist. The Martin Logan LX16 (Motion 15 latest version) two-way bookshelf speakers ($799 pr.) utilize a proprietary Folded Motion tweeter. Martin Logan has reached a new price point, and consumer demographic, with the entire Motion Series. I found the LX16s to stand up to the MartinLogan name. No, the LX16s cannot really compare to MartinLogan’s iconic hybrid electrostats, but they shouldn’t be expected to at only a fraction of the cost. The LX16s have a beautiful finish, excellent aesthetics, and come in a reasonably small package. The 5.25” midrange driver hammers out a surprising amount of bass, and the Folded Motion tweeter is crisp and clean, if not a little bright. These speakers would work great in a standalone 2.1 system, or as main speakers in a 5.1 system. If you are in the market for good speakers with above average looks, give these a listen. The Motion 15's have just been released which are identical in performance to the LX16's but cosmetically refreshed.

Outlaw Audio BLSv2 Bookshelf and LCRv2 Loudspeaker Review
10 years ago, Outlaw Audio released a hit product with their acclaimed BLS and LCR loudspeakers, but the availability of those products was short-lived after their manufacturing source shut down. Outlaw Audio shelved plans to continue production elsewhere, since no other manufacturer could meet their criteria for quality control at the time. However, things have changed, and Outlaw Audio decided to bring these speakers back to market after locating a good manufacturing source. Did they improve the original design while greatly reducing the original cost? Read our full review to find out...
Philharmonic Audio BMR Philharmonitor Bookshelf Speaker Review
There is a lot of online buzz about Philharmonic Audio's BMR Philharmonitors, so we decided to get a review pair to see what they were all about. In our in-depth review, we ask the question, do these speakers live up to the hype surrounding them? Read on to find out what we have uncovered.
Revel Performa M126Be Bookshelf Speaker Review
Revel had a good loudspeaker platform in the Performa3 line. In fact, the basic design was so good that Revel decided to see what would happen when that design was upgraded to its full performance capabilities by using some of the highest-end components available such as air-core inductors, polyfilm capacitors, anodized aluminum woofers, and even a Beryllium tweeter. Read our detailed review of the Performa M126Be hot rod bookshelf speakers to see how much these premium components added to an already solidly engineered design.

MartinLogan Motion 35XTi Bookshelf Speaker Review
MartinLogan, famous for their curved panel electrostatic speakers, has recently revamped their Motion line of loudspeakers that use a more traditional enclosure. While the cabinet may be more conventional than their higher-tiered loudspeakers, the Motion speakers are still not without design distinctions that set them apart from other speakers in the same class. In for review today, we have the Motion 35XTi, the larger bookshelf speaker within the Motion series featuring a 6.5" woofer and AMT tweeter. Read our in-depth review to see what MartinLogan does to retain their signature electrostatic sound within a box-enclosure loudspeaker.

Kali Audio LP-8 Powered Monitor Loudspeaker Review
Can you use pro-audio equipment for home audio applications? We ask that question in our review of the Kali Audio LP-8, a studio monitor. If the purpose of a loudspeaker is to reproduce accurate sound, the resultant sound of a studio monitor shouldn't differ from a home audio speaker. With this in mind, let's see how the LP-8 fares for recreational listening rather than monitoring. Should you consider them for your stereo or home theater system, or should they stay in the studio? Read our in-depth review of the Kali Audio LP-8s to find out.
PreSonus Eris E8 XT Active Studio Monitors Review
Those in the content-creation side of audio know PreSonus as a major manufacturer of a host of pro-audio products including their popular 'Eris' line of studio monitors. The Eris E8 XT powered monitors are some of the beefier speakers among PreSonus' array of monitor offerings; they have an 8" fiber-woven woofer, a waveguide-loaded 1.25" dome tweeter, and 140 watts of onboard amplification. That is a lot of muscle, but monitors, above all, must be accurate, so how do the Eris E8 XT monitors fare in this regard? Read our in-depth review to find out!
RBH Sound PM-8 Active Monitor Loudspeaker Review
RBH Sound, well known for their home audio loudspeakers, has decided to dip their toes in the pro-audio market with the PM-8 two-way active studio monitors, but perhaps 'dip their toes' doesn't do justice to the magnitude of these massive speakers. Each PM-8 tips the scale at 43lbs and houses 400 watts of amplification with a heavy-duty 8" woofer and a high-end AMT tweeter along with sophisticated DSP for optimal driver integration and performance. While these are clearly NOT timid stab at pro-audio applications, we wondered if they could be also used as hi-fi speakers for home audio? Read our in-depth review to find out.
ADAM Audio T7V Powered Monitor Speaker Review
ADAM Audio has long been known as pioneers in bringing AMT drivers to pro-audio loudspeaker design. They have traditionally occupied a somewhat higher price-point than major monitor brands, but that has changed recently with their T series monitors which use the same design principles in a more affordable package. The ADAM Audio T7V's are near-field monitors that use ADAM Audio's AMT tweeters in a sophisticated waveguide along with class-D amplification in an unusually attractive cabinet that looks a lot nicer than it needs to for studio purposes. Can a monitor this sleek-looking also be used for home audio? Read our in-depth review to find out!
