Emotiva launched their pro line last week, and kicking off the brand, they released 3 self powered two-way loudspeakers designed for discriminating audiophiles in both the home and studio environment.  All three models feature their own proprietary ribbon high frequency driver and bi-amplification and active crossovers.  Each speaker features both unbalanced and balanced input connections.  All speakers come with a 5-year transferable warranty and a freer 30 day in-home trial.

Airmotiv4 (MSRP: $399/pair)

The airmotiv4 sports a 4.5" airmotiv low-frequency transducer with Curv® polypropolene composite cone structure and a 26 x 32 mm airmotiv high frequency folded-ribbon transducer.  The active crossover is said to be a precision multi-pole phase compensated design.  Each speaker is powered by a total of 50 watts (25 watts for the woofer and 25 watts for the tweeter) with an impressive -2dB point of 58Hz.

Airmotiv5 (MSRP: $599/pair)

The airmotiv5 sports a 5.25" version of their airmotiv woofer, and the same ribbon tweeter.  Each speaker is powered by a total of 100 watts (50 watts for the woofer and 50 watts for the tweeter) with an impressive -2dB point of 52Hz.

Airmotiv6 (MSRP: $799/pair)

The airmotiv5 sports a 6.5" version of their airmotiv woofer, and the same ribbon tweeter.  Each speaker is powered by a total of 210 watts (110 watts for the woofer and 100 watts for the tweeter) with an impressive -1.7dB point of 43Hz.

Airmotiv BackpanelThere are back panel controls to adjust the low and high end EQ which allows the end user to adjust the bass and treble by -2/ 0 / +2db.  The purpose of these controls are to allow the end user to set the speaker to their environment.  The cabinets are heavily dampened with both an absorption material for the high frequencies and a dense asphalt based material to lower the cabinet resonance.  This combined with the multiple internal braces minimize cabinet colorization for a purer response.  On the 4 and 5” versions there is a specially tooled arced, oval port with a fluted throat.  Level controls are incorporated for matching the output level of the attached gear.

Not only are all the detailed specs of these new speakers clearly specified on the Emotiva Pro website, but a full battery of measurements are also included.

Emotiva Pro Airmotiv5 Frequency Response

Black trace - on axis; blue trace - 15 deg off axis; Green trace - 30 deg off axis

The frequency response graph is limited from 300Hz to 40kHz which was likely done as a gated measurement lacking resolution for lower frequencies.  We look forward to doing a full comprehensive review of these products with measurements to follow.
