Cerwin-Vega! CVHD 5.1 Review

Cerwin-Vega! CVHD 5.1 Review

For years, Cerwin-Vega! has been known as a company that produces LOUD speakers (they seem to harbor this thought with their tagline "The LOUD Speaker Company"). The slim profile CVHD 5.1 system and hi-tech looks complement many decors and more importantly the expectations of what home theater speakers should look like in many consumers' minds. For $1000, there are a lot of speaker sets out there that are better (but probably don't have as good a sub) but I've seen this set on sale online for as little as $550. For $550, they are a very good deal. The sub is going to destroy any HTiB "bass module" it comes across and you can pump enough sound through the satellites to fill a large room without frying your amp. While they have their limitations, for the right person, at the right price, they could be the right set.

NHT Verve IV 5.1 Speaker System Review

NHT Verve IV 5.1 Speaker System Review

Did you know that over 40% of NHT employees are musicians? Knowing that little bit of trivia helps one to understand why the company has such a solid reputation with both audiophiles, and yes, musicians. I know several professional session and live players who swear by the NHT speakers they have in their home a/v rig, and if you are looking for a very "musical" speaker that can also handle the demands of home theater, NHT is a manufacturer you should consider when speaker shopping.

Acoustic Research Home Decor Speaker System Review

Acoustic Research Home Decor Speaker System Review

One of the more interesting products I saw at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas was the Home Decor system from Acoustic Research. The system had been named a CES Innovations 2007 Award Honoree, and on the surface I could immediately see the appeal - the marriage of a 5.1 speaker system and a favorable WAF = the combo many a man has sought after!

The NHT Xd system is the successful realization of an ambitious technical goal NHT set for themselves years ago. It’s a brilliant melding of disparate technologies that so well expresses itself with musical elegance, finesse & power. Critical listeners everywhere will experience musical satisfaction to an altogether uncommon depth & degree. This system comes highly recommended to those who demand both sonic excellence and a product that adds a strikingly attractive new dimension to the overall visual appeal of their listening space.

Yamaha YSP-1100 Video

Yamaha YSP-1100 Video

Yamaha's new Digital Sound projector features 42 DSP-driven drivers that fire in waves to route sound in a way that recreates a full surround sound experience from a single enclosure. We listened to this unit and found it to provide an impressive, immersive experience that differs from anything we had witnessed before. The YSP bubble effect is like surround without speakers and is far different from other phase-based, DSP-only solutions.

Logitech Z-5450 Digital Multimedia Speaker System Review

Logitech Z-5450 Digital Multimedia Speaker System Review

It seems that I spend more time in front of my computer these days than I do in my home theater. As a result, I listen to music, play games, and watch video at my desk almost every day. The idea of a true 5.1 channel surround system has never appealed to me mainly because of the logistics involved with the rear speakers. In both my office and my home computer setups, there is no good way to conceal speaker wires running to the rear surrounds. With the introduction of the Z-5450 Digital multimedia speaker system, Logitech has solved this problem.

Radiient Elara Home Theater Speaker System Review

Radiient Elara Home Theater Speaker System Review

It was funny, the very same day I got an email from Gene telling me these speakers were on the way, I had read a request from a forum member about a review of them. So, Murrel, I guess this one is for you. Before receiving the speakers, I perused the Radiient website to get an idea of what I was in for. The speaker package is a 5.0 system which I was both happy and disheartened by. Happy, because I didn’t have move that brick of a sub that is the EP500, but disheartened because I like testing full systems. The speakers looked more like a satellite system with fairly small speakers probably crossed over pretty high… until I looked at the specs – frequency response down to 50Hz on the mains? Hold on, and what does that price say…$499? Intrigued, I was glad to hear that they would be shipping immediately.

Klipsch THX Ultra2 Loudspeaker System Review

Klipsch THX Ultra2 Loudspeaker System Review

For nearly six decades Klipsch Audio Technologies has held an enviably successful position in the American consumer audio industry. That sort of longevity (given the competitive, volatile nature of the speaker biz) is, in and of itself, a tremendous and rare accomplishment. That their success has come about with a product line focused on horn-loaded loudspeaker systems for both the pro and home audio use makes this achievement even more impressive. And Klipsch knows horns; some of the best & brightest loudspeaker engineers, both past & present have contributed their talents to the Klipsch product lines over the years. And it all began with one person, with an idea, and a rented tin shed in Hope, Arkansas.

SVS SBS-01 Speaker System Review

SVS SBS-01 Speaker System Review

It was like a flare went up on the Internet the day that SVS released their new 5.1 speaker system. SVS has had a reputation for years as an excellent subwoofer manufacturer offering great subs for rock bottom prices. To say that SVS has a loyal following is akin to suggesting that sharks LIKE to eat or that flowers ENJOY sunshine. SVS inspires loyalty so intense, it borders on fanaticism. Needless to say, when Gene called me and asked if I wanted to review the new SVS (that’s as far as he got before I said yes). Like anyone that has spent any time on the Internet, I can’t help but be curious about the SVS subs. Given the opportunity to play with their new speaker system was just too good to pass up.

Orb Audio Mod2 Speakers Review

Orb Audio Mod2 Speakers Review

Not all of us have the luxury or the ability to spend thousands of dollars on high priced, high performing, extremely accurate but outrageously ugly speaker systems. And those of us that have that ability may often have to deal with a "significant other" whose love of feng shui may be as strong as our love for tight, accurate, and heart stopping bass. All of a sudden, we have to explain why small, cute speakers are simply inadequate for producing the type of sound quality that an audiophile in training longs to possess. And for the most part, this is true until now. Enter Orb Audio. Sold online though their website only, Orbs are offered in a variety of packages: Single Orbs (Mod 1), double Orbs (Mod 2), or any combination you want including mixing and matching the four available finishes (white, black, hand polished steel, and hand antiqued copper).

Pioneer HTP-4600 Home Theater Review

The world of home theater has practically exploded over the last several years, with everyone scrambling to purchase AV systems to bring that theatrical sound into their living rooms. Whether you choose to credit (or perhaps blame?) Hollywood or rising ticket prices for the new trend, home theater is certainly becoming a realization for more and more families. But what happens when you introduce these surround sound systems into existing living rooms?

With the new trend towards flat panel displays and silver colored electronics (at least for televisions) it is no wonder several manufacturers are releasing space-saving loudspeaker designs custom-tailored for the person living with 21st century technology. We previously reviewed Canton's Karat Reference Series loudspeakers and found them to be competitive performers for their price. Now it was time to see if this German company could mesh form with function and not leave us wanting for more.
