DISH Hopper Adds Olympic TV App

DISH Hopper Adds Olympic TV App

DISH has gone Olympic... This morning I awoke to a new app on my DISH Hopper Whole Home DVR: Olympic TV. By selecting the blue button on the remote control, you can start the application. An overlay then appears on screen with live TV playing at 70 percent the original size and a reverse-L shape screen that features medal counts, top stories, TV schedule and Team USA news. You can, of course, expand the app to full screen so you can see athlete news and even stories about London. This app is available to DISH customers on the Hopper and ViP series receivers throughout the next couple of weeks.

Onkyo Music Streaming with UBT-1 Bluetooth USB Adapter

Onkyo Music Streaming with UBT-1 Bluetooth USB Adapter

Onkyo receivers were already ridiculously over-featured - if that's possible. The company has now upped their game once again, however, adding a new USB Bluetooth adapter. Why? Well, with the growing popularity of music streaming and ever-increasingly tech-savvy consumers, Onkyo wanted to expand what it could do. But it didn't just add Bluetooth connectivity to its receivers, it added the additional functionality of streaming capabilities to its iPod Touch/iPhone and Android/Kindle remote apps. Now, the USB Bluetooth dongle serves as a hardware gateway for a whole new way to get music to your A/V receiver and control it remotely from your phone or tablet.

CEDIA High Performance Experience Rooms, Powered by Audioholics!

CEDIA High Performance Experience Rooms, Powered by Audioholics!

This year CEDIA is debuting its new High Performance Experience Rooms, which are dedicated listening rooms designed to show off the latest two-channel gear, and perhaps even some video products as well. The "HiPER" rooms (your welcome, CEDIA - yes, I just came up with that on the fly) will allow attendees to have a true and intimate experience with some of the most sophisticated audio and video products in the industry. This is a great way to truly experience some of the most powerful and the most impressive audio and video products debuting at CEDIA EXPO 2012. What's triply exciting is that the entire event is sponsored by Audioholics. Audioholics has been a huge supporter of CEDIA for many years and we're excited to be part of the new HiPER rooms coming online this year. Our hope is that this will only be the start of what could explode into a new revival of high end audio and video for the custom installation industry.

Salamander Modular Olivia Home Theater Seating

Salamander Modular Olivia Home Theater Seating

Salamander Designs has been making home theater furniture components for a while now, and their designs (in our opinion) always come across as intriguing and practical. They make everything from audio/video entertainment furniture, home theater seating and accessories such as accent lighting and wall hanging systems. Now, the company has introduced the Olivia seating collection. Olivia delivers the features you'd expect of home theater seating, like (optional) cup holders and a choice of motorized, manual or non-reclining backs - but it also gives you the comfort and look of an elegant sofa. The new Olivia is available in a range of materials and, thanks to Salamander’s new Custom Details program, customers can choose from a matching or contrasting double-needle stitch.

Netflix Trending Towards TV Episodes

Netflix Trending Towards TV Episodes

Netflix seems to be shifting in focus, even while it grows in popularity. Late last year, Netflix had capitalized on the good press that their members had consumed over 2 billion hours of video in the fourth quarter. This June, the company reported, it exceeded (for the first time ever) 1 billion hours of streaming content in a single month. That's about a 50% increase in viewing if that rate keeps up. What's more interesting, however, is the Neilsen data showing the trending of Netflix towards television episodes as opposed to movies. According to Netflix, a full 60% of viewing hours are spent on television shows, compared with 40% for movies. The trend is both expected, in my opinion, and dangerous for their business model. Let me explain why...

Netflix might have an identity crisis. Are they a disc-by-mail company? Are they a streaming media service? Are they a movie studio? With an emphasis on TV, they are flying straight into Hulu.

Anthem Statement D2v 3D and AVM 50v 3D Upgrade

Anthem just released a 3D upgrade to the Anthem Statement D2v and Anthem AVM 50v audio/video processors. The latest generation Statement D2v 3D and AVM 50v 3D continue to have 8 HDMI inputs and 2 parallel outputs, however HDMI Inputs 1 through 4 and HDMI Output 1 now support 3D pass-through mode, automatically switching to it upon sensing a 3D source. In pass-through mode the output refresh rate is also automatically matched to the source's frame refresh rate, useful for sources that output a mix between 24, 50 and 60 Hz.

Sony and Panasonic OLED TV Partnership?

Sony and Panasonic OLED TV Partnership?

A very brief Reuters article popped up this week which dropped a huge bomb on the television industry. Well, at least to those of us following the progress of OLED TV technology. Sony and Panasonic are both rivals... and both located in Japan, which means that when the two of them get together, world domination cannot be far behind (OK, maybe that was a bit overdramatic). But still, it's now being reported that the companies will announce an agreement next week to mass produce next-gen OLED (organic light emitting diode) televisions. The article cited two "sources" that were not disclosed, for obvious reasons.

Stewart CIMA Fixed and Electric Screens More Affordable

Stewart CIMA Fixed and Electric Screens More Affordable

This week was a big one for Stewart Filmscreen, who announced this week the introduction of their new CIMA line of screens. CIMA is a new screen line offering standard configurations and sizes for fixed frame, in-ceiling, and electric screen solutions, but who might not need the configurability and/or flexibility the other Stewart lines offer. Stewart has designed the CIMA line to continue to be quality-made and durability and it continues to be both designed and manufactured in the USA. The design of CIMA provides integrators with a screen solution at a competitive price. Presumably, installers can now offer the Stewart name to consumers and clients who may not have been able to afford it in the past.

Diablo 3 Subtle Ambience for Your HTPC

Diablo 3 Subtle Ambience for Your HTPC

Diablo 3 may be the most anticipated game of the decade, arriving 12 years after its predecessor - now it's finally here! The PC-only video game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment continued its point-and-click, hack and slash fest last night at 12:01 AM PST. Die-hard fans either attended late night sale events or were downloading and installing the game at the stroke of midnight. Unfortunately for those of us on easterly time zones we had to wait considerably longer than midnight to actually play. Blizzard’s Battle.net servers hosting the online-only game were delivering an alarming Error 33, warning users that the game is not available yet. Considering Diablo 3 was first announced back in 2008 with no release date in site, a few more hours can’t hurt.

Is High Resolution Audio Making a Comeback?

Is High Resolution Audio Making a Comeback?

We work pretty closely with CEDIA, and lately, they've been taking a good hard look at some signals that indicate high resolution audio may be making a comeback. For years, MP3s and compressed digital files have been growing in popularity and dominance, but a taste for fidelity seems to be creeping back into the market now that the flat panel craze is winding down. It's not winding down because people no longer like flat panel TVs - it's just that everyone now has one... or two or three - in their home. Even vinyl has experienced a revival among the hardcore purists (although we don't believe vinyl is necessarily "pure" given the nature of the recording process). In any case, and awakening into the world of high fidelity audio means that consumers are waking up to realize there is more out there for them to experience and enjoy.

CEDIA is hosting a "Success with High-Resolution Audio Sources" webinar on Thursday that will cover everything you need to know about adding high-res audio to your business's offerings.
