AV Rant #181: Dog Pillow [0.13] by tom,May 24, 2010 04:35
This week on AV Rant, Tom loses it. Also on tap this week, Onkyo partners with Walmart, the LifeLock dude needs to change his keys, Steven gets a better answer, and moths might just make your next display much better. Hate HDMI? Hello MHL (which, Tom discovered after the podcast, is not the same thing as Mobile HD). Netflix streams HD to PCs. Pandora - a study. We are REALLY sorry and video didn't work this week as you would have seen Tom cry. Yes, cry.
AV Rant #81: Wall-E Damage [0.13] by clint,July 06, 2008 21:27
Another threesome - this time with J and Dina. Jaime's Flaming Onkyo update. Paul wants to know if he should be interested in tube amps or not. Do Tom and J have Audiophilenervousa? Tom's theory of esoteric speaker design. J and Dina went to see Wall-E this weekend and had tons of stuff to share. J is old. Getting free tickets at the theater. Tom's got a new series of editorials coming out soon. Something to look forward to or avoid depending on what you think of Tom. DRM in the future - government controlled? Tom will be on vacation next week so it will probably be Clint and Dina. Thanks for listening and don't forget to vote for us at Podcast Alley.

Could Tom do a budget display shootout? Maybe… How to properly use your SPL meter. A discussion of Wal-Mart sponsored piracy. iTunes is a black hole of information. Listen in for all this and more.

Onkyo CS-V645 DVD/CD Mini System First Look [0.13] by tom,November 09, 2010 07:10
Consisting of a combination of iPod dock, DVD player, and 40 watt per channel receiver, the Onkyo CS-V645 looks to be a standalone solution for space and budget challenged customers. What we like best about the CS-V645 is the price. It will be available in early December with a suggested retail price of $399 just in time for the holiday season. This looks to be very nice starter system for students or people with little space. We could never get behind a system (two channel or no) without a subwoofer output especially one that was designed with video in mind. At less that $400, the CS-V645 has everything you need for a relatively compact system that can later be integrated into a more serious home theater. With 1080p upscaling, iPod integration, and ability to access USB content, the Onkyo CS-V645 should be everything your youngster needs to access their music and video.
Onkyo HT-S5500 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver/Speaker Package Preview [0.13] by tom,March 11, 2012 21:15
One thing we've always liked about Onkyo's HTiB offerings is their perchance to include full receivers. No funny proprietary connections, no funky speaker wires that can't be changed or lengthened, just a simple receiver connected to inexpensive speakers that a user can, later on down the line, swap out for something better. This is the perfect solution for the newbie and we often recommend Onkyo HTiBs to our friends that won't listen to reason. Onkyo has some very high end HTiBs and some that are very budget. The new HT-S5500 is a middle of the pack offering (as far as price) with a lot of very attractive features.
Onkyo TX-NR1009 THX Select2 Plus Networking Home Theater Receiver Preview [0.13] by tom,June 03, 2011 01:20
DTS Neo:X technology - The industry’s first 2.0/5.1/6.1/7.1-to- 9.1/11.1 conversion technology within a single algorithm. Is it enough to get you to buy the Onkyo TX-NR1009? Because aside from two additional channels of amplification (and maybe a bell or whistle or two), it's what the TX-NR1009 has over the $1100 TX-NR809. Consumers will have to take a close look at the TX-NR1009 to see if the slight upgrades are worth the $200 price increase.
