British-based KEF showed off their brand new KHT1005.2 Home Theater Speakers this week at the 2008 CES. The ‘egg-shaped’ surround speakers are joined by the KUBE-1, KEF’s newest, entry-level subwoofer. The system is a second generation model based on their Home Theater 1000 Series speaker system which debuted in 2004. Like the 1000 Series, these speakers utilize KEF's Uni-Q driver design, but with a few modifications, according to the company.

At 75mm (3”), the KHT1005.2 Series utilizes the smallest Uni-Q drivers made by the company, resulting in a very diminutive enclosure that still outputs a pleasing sound. Uni-Q technology disperses sound over a wide area, which the consumer can enjoy from any location within a room. KEF places its tweeter in the acoustic and mechanical center of the midrange cone, resulting in a near-perfect, single-point-source driver. This configuration is designed to allow both drivers’ frequency ranges to be delivered in precise focus, providing a wide dispersion. This expands the typical “sweet spot”  while still allowing for imaging.

The KHT1005.2 satellite and center speakers are the most compact of KEF’s home theater speaker systems. Available only in high-gloss black finish, it is well-suited to the recent trend of high-gloss TVs - and we've seen tons of those displayed at this year's CES show. By also including wall mount brackets, KEF gives consumers the option to mount the speakers to a wall or shelf.

To complete the 5.1 home theater experience, KEF provides the system with the new KUBE-1 subwoofer. A compact and lightweight design, the new entry-level KUBE-1 is a direct replacement for the PSW1000.2. The beauty of KEF’s new KUBE-1 subwoofer resides not only in its aesthetic appeal but also in its diminutive cubed construction which allows the consumer to tuck it discretely in corners, maximizing space. The KUBE-1 stands at just 11.5” in all dimensions and sports a high-gloss surface. Power is delivered by an on-board 150W class-D amplifier and 8” driver and passive radiator.

The complete KHT1005.2 Speaker System includes four satellite speakers (one pair for front and one pair for rear), one center channel speaker (essentially the same speaker aesthetically-modified for side-placement) and the KUBE-1 Powered Subwoofer. The system is available now for a listed MSRP of $800.
