Onkyo TX-SR601 6.1 Home Theater Receiver Review

by clint,September 06, 2003 20:00
- Overall, I was quite impressed with the Onkyo TX-SR601 amplifier section, especially at a $500 retail price point. We are often asked about sub-$500 receiver options at Audioholics and I would have no problems recommending the Onkyo as a contender within that price range. Its performance for both music and movies is exceptional and it can handle efficient 6-ohm and even 4-ohm speakers with no apparent difficulties at moderate to loud listening levels in reasonably medium sized rooms (under 2500 cubic feet).

- Onkyo enters a crowded headphone market with an eye toward treating your ears to hi-fi. The ES-HF300 features 40mm, dual ported titanium drivers in a full-sized on-ear headphone that remains efficient and mobile-device friendly. The Japanese hi-fi company has carved a reputation for crushing cost-to-performance expectations. But its new line marks Onkyo's first-ever foray into the headphone market. In this review we'll put Onkyo's flagship cans to the test to see if they're built on the company's sound reputation or if they're just a pair of also-rans in a market that's too often more hi-style than hi-fi.

- In an age when home entertainment technology is often out of date as soon as it is introduced, Onkyo has now adapted the computer industry's architecture of replaceable modules, upgradeable software, and build-to-order marketing. These will make it possible for consumers to upgrade and even customize hardware and software to avoid short-term obsolescence. As new modules become available, customers will have choices, just as they do when purchasing a computer.
