GreenTV Logo Coming to Energy-Saving HDTV

by July 28, 2008

If your one of the few who feel your consumer electronics don’t look enough like Nascar drivers, a new logo wants to adorn your LCD HDTV. Soon, select LCD TVs will be awarded a new GreenTV logo so you won’t have to guess which HDTV choice is the most energy efficient.

A group called the LCD TV Association wants to make it crystal clear which digital display type is the most energy efficient. The new logo will help consumers easily identify which sets get the Association’s nod.

The group says it’ll award the logo to LCD based TVs with built-in ambient light sensors that adjust backlight according to need. A feature we’ve seen with Philips new 5000 and 7000 line of LCD HDTVs. As your TV viewing room darkens, these new energy-saving sets will automatically dim your LCD’s backlight. This can save electricity and also reduce eyestrain associated with constant retinal adjustments that compensate for viewing bright TV in a dark room. The new logo will have standards that require the TV to reducing light output by at least 30 percent.

As LCD technology incorporates future energy saving features the GreenTV logo will adapt. Associate Chairman of LCD TV Association Bruce Berkoff says new technology is coming that will actively dim portions of the screen that don’t require as much light.

Currently the GreenTV designation says nothing of the use of hazardous substances such as lead, cadmium, beryllium or the use of recycled and/or minimal packaging. GreenTV and other eco-certifications certification programs like Energy Star still have a long way to go.
