APC AV Engineered Power Solutions

by January 09, 2005

While some exotic cable vendors enjoy slapping batteries on their cables for analleged benefit which cannot be measured or proven, there are applications where battery back up is the real deal such as the case for APC's new home theater power conditioners. APC is known for designing power supplies, suppressors and conditioners for NASA, and the medical field (particularly hospital applications). Realizing a deficiency existed for well designed power conditioners in the home theater marketplace, they have taken their expertise established from these critical applications and applied it to consumer home theater.

The APC AV offers surge suppression and conditioning as well as provisioning battery back up for up 70 minutes at full load (with 2 b a tteries). Unlike most of the more well-known power conditioners, the APC AV is tested to the toughest standards of UL1449 and IEEE. The APC offers very low Let-Through voltage ratings, ensuring the best level of protection.

A Note About Let-Through Voltage
This is a measure, established by the Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers (IEEE), of total voltage allowed though a device during a transient on the power line. According to UL's 1449 standard, a Let-Through Voltage of < 330V is considered good. The APC AV's S type power conditioner with battery backup has a Let-Through Voltage rating of < 40V!

According to IEEE, Let-Through Voltage Rating is the best indication of surge suppression performance (the lower the # the better). Most power conditioner companies tout Joule rating as an indicator of surge suppression. A Joule rating only communicates how much energy is required to break down the surge suppressor, but gives no indication as to the surge suppressor's effectiveness of preventing a surge and spikes from reaching your equipment. APC protection is guaranteed for life!

[DAY1_173] APC's Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) corrects brownouts (low AC voltage) and over-voltages to keep the RMS voltage within proper operating ranges (108-132Vrms) for your components' power supplies.

The APC AV offers 12 surge protected outlets, 3 pair + splitter Coax, 1 pair 10/100bT Ethernet, 2 line, 4 wire with splitter for Telephone/DSL.

Upon speaking with the APC Design Engineer we discovered their approach in developing power solutions was as follows " we design real world solutions based on measurable and provable problems. If it cannot be measured or quantified, we don't address the alleged issue ." This is right in line with our philosophy and as you can see by the specifications of these products, they offer unique and comprehensive power solutions unrevealed by many of the more popular name brands in the industry.
