Onkyo Audio BD-SP809 THX Blu-ray Player Preview
[0.19]
by tom,July 14, 2011 06:05
- Onkyo has been known for their full-featured receivers for quite some time. Their newest Blu-ray player, the BD-SP809 looks to continue that trend. Its got THX certification, 3D support, dual HDMI outputs, DLNA 1.5 certification, Netflix 3.0, Blockbuster, Film Fresh, and VUDU streaming, Marvell Qdeo upscaling, and 297 MHz/12-Bit NSV DACs. For $600, it is a solid player. But the question is, how does it stand up to the Oppo offerings? Not bad...if you aren't a power user.

Onkyo BD-SP309 3D Blu-ray Player First Look
[0.19]
by tom,April 20, 2011 02:45
- In a post Oppo Blu-ray world, the only thing you can do to compete it to release a player at a lower price point. Onkyo has come in at half the Oppo's price with their new BD-SP309 Blu-ray player. That's a pretty significant savings. But the question is what features did they have to cut? Well, not the important one. 3D is on board as is dual USB ports. You can stream Internet radio, Pandora, Netflix, and VUDU natively. The downside? If you don't have an HDMI input somewhere, you're out of luck. While power users will want to look elsewhere, those wanting 3D and not really caring much about anything else can save a few hundred dollars over other options with the Onkyo BD-SP309.

$6,500 7.x Channel Recommended Home Theater System
[0.19]
by smunz,June 22, 2014 13:00
- The Audioholics $6,500 recommended home theater is a bit different from some of our other systems. This time, we wanted to build a setup where attention to aesthetics went beyond the usual "well...it's not THAT ugly." Needless to say, there are no towers in this system, nor is our first choice of subwoofer a ported, refrigerator sized behemoth. Does that mean performance went out the window? Not at all. Phantoms of CEDIA 2008
[0.19]
by tom,September 11, 2008 06:53
- One thing you run across when you go to a show like CEDIA is gear you can neither explain nor properly cover. A lot of times it is just stuff that is there from a manufacturing partner, or perhaps it is so new that no one knows anything about it. Occasionally there is the odd prototype or something just too new for the marketing people to have time to put together any material. It might be there for pictures and that's about it. Sometimes products are just vaporware, there to draw you in but not in any shape to actually work. These phantom products do deserve a little coverage though, so here it is.
