Hitachi 55-inch 1080p Plasma

Not to be left out of the new 1080p plasma loop, Hitachi is showing their new 55 inch plasma television - the first 55-inch 1080p PDP according to the company. The image looked very good overall but it did not look quite as good as the Pioneer Elite or the Panasonic. This may be a result of the software they were using for demonstration - it's very hard at times to judge displays at the show unless you are fully aware of the complete display path. The new plasma has a claimed contrast ratio of 5000:1 and brightness is specified as 1000cd/m. The new plasma incorporates Hitachi's proprietary video processor. No shipping date or pricing information was available as this was primarily a technology demonstration.

In general, high resolution panels bring some demerits, such as lower brightness and luminous efficiency. Hitachi's FHP claims to resolve those demerits by what they refer to as a newly developed high density grid cell structure (0.21 x 0.63mm^2 per cell), electrode structure and discharge gas mixture. Moreover, by establishing stable process technology for fine cell forming, FHP achieved 2.07 megapixels with high brightness and contrast.

Specifications:

Display size: 55" diagonal (1210mm x 680mm)
Pixels: 1920 x 1080
Aspect ratio:16:9
Pixel Pitch: (0.21mm x 3) x 0.63mm
Brightness: 1000cd/m^2
"Darkroom" Contrast: 5000:1
