Scandyna The Megapod

I'm sure form over function is a constant source of stress for many manufacturers. We're not sure which reigned supreme for Scandyna. The unique and striking Megapod made it's debut this week just in time for CES. A large crowd gathered by Scandyna's booth, no doubt attracted by the loud sounds and colors of the Megapods. The Megapod, which is a 10" woofer loaded base with a Minipod on top, is Scandyna's first full range offering. Equipped with an active 3-way crossover, The Megapod is geared for a 2 channel music setup, but can also be used in a surround array. Traditionally, Scandyna had marketed it's smaller Minipods in conjuction with a subwoofer to achieve a full range/surround setup. Also, for existing Minipod owners who want to turn them into Megapods, the company is offering the purchase of just the Megapod "base".

People stopping by the booth were also treated to a very cool sneak peak at a "still-in-the-lab" two-channel power amp. In the same design vein as it's speaker siblings, this 4 input, 2 x 50 watt amp is closer to resembling a large mixing bowl rather than the traditional black box amp/receiver you are used to seeing. While this item was not yet an official release, it will be marketed to compliment the Megapods aesthetically and sonically.

[IMGP0176_lg] Megapod specifications:

  • Frequency response: -6db at 28hz and 25khz
  • Sensitivity 91 db spl (1w @ 1m) 4 ohm
  • Sound: compatible with amplifiers from 10w-200w output
  • Speakers: 1x10" long throw, 1x5" midrange featuring kevlar piston

The Megapod's MSRP is $1,000 per complete speaker, or can be purchased as a base-only model (10" woofer) for $800. Scheduled for a spring release. Visit www.podspeakers.com for more info.
