Yamaha Network AV Center

Yamaha showed off a prototype of its Network AV Center, a rather mercurial device that is being considered as a next-generation AV processor/hub for 2006. The unit is planned to have at least the following specifications:

• Video inputs: composite/s-video/component/HDMI
• Video outputs: composite/s-video/component/HDMI
• Audio inputs: stereo, multi-channel (analogue & HDMI)
• Audio outputs: stereo, S/PDIF, iLINK
• Interfaces: USB, SD card, Ethernet
• Hard disc drive: built-in
• RS-232C support
• AM/FM/XM radio support
• Seven channels of amplification with 5-way binding posts

The design goal is to be able to utilize this device to control the audio/video systems in an entire home. Satellite/HD radio, personal computers, DVRs, portable audio players, CD/DVD players and memory cards could all easily connect and be controlled via the Network AV Center interface. A local hard disc could be used to store settings, playlists, files or other data and metadata to enable a greater amount of functionality. Yamaha hopes that through the use of ample inputs and outputs, along with Ethernet support, local hard disc, RS-232C and USB, the Network AV Center will be able to play an expanded role in the home AV market.
