LG Taps Genesis FLI8532 'Cortez' for New LCD TVs

by June 01, 2005

SAN JOSE, CA - June 1, 2005 - Genesis Microchip Inc. today announced that LG Electronics, one of the world's leading consumer electronics companies, has designed Genesis Microchip's highly integrated FLI8532 (Cortez) flat-panel television controller into multiple LCD TV platforms to be distributed worldwide. In Europe and Asia, LG Electronics is leveraging the new video controller in LCD TVs ranging from 26-inches, 32-inches, 37-inches and 42-inches. In Latin America, the FLI8532 is designed into both the 37-inch and 42-inch LCD TV models. LG's new LCD TV platforms display the Faroudja DCDi Cinema(TM) brand on their faceplates to denote the inclusion of Genesis Microchip's latest suite of advanced video processing technologies. Certain models leverage the combination of the FLI8532 with Genesis' other recently introduced video controller, the FLI8125 or Hudson, to offer integrated Picture-in-Picture (PIP) functionality.

"Once again LG Electronics has selected Genesis' latest series of advanced video display controllers for its new range of sleek, large-screen LCD TVs, where premium video quality is an absolute necessity," said Raphael Mehrbians, Genesis Microchip's senior vice president of Product Marketing. "We are pleased to continue supporting LG with our industry-leading levels of performance, integration and functionality as they produce world-class flat-panel televisions such as these new models and their new Plasma displays announced last month."

The FLI8532 and FLI8125 were designed to provide a high-quality dual channel solution for Picture-in-Picture applications. The FLI8532 is a highly integrated, single-chip television solution for flat-panel televisions. It features Faroudja's Emmy award-winning, advanced video decoding, directional correlational deinterlacing (DCDi) and video enhancement technologies, whose inclusion is represented by the Faroudja DCDi Cinema(TM) brand. An integrated multi-standard 3-D video decoder provides support for NTSC, PAL and SECAM standards and the integrated VBI (Vertical Blanking Interval) processor supports Teletext, Closed Captioning, V-chip and other VBI services. The FLI8532 also features proprietary technologies to improve the performance of Liquid Crystal Displays for television applications including LCD Overdrive technology to reduce motion smearing artifacts and an Active Color Management(TM) system to improve the dynamic color range. An embedded microcontroller and versatile On-Screen-Display (OSD) facilitate rapid product design of a global television chassis.

The FLI8125 is a cost-effective, highly integrated, mixed-signal controller for TV and digital video applications and supports HD formats including 720p and 1080i. It incorporates a suite of technologies promoted under the Faroudja DCDi Edge(TM) brand, including Faroudja's proprietary memory-less DCDi to eliminate jagged edges in video, TrueLife(TM) video enhancement and Active Color Management(TM) technologies. The controller also features a multi-standard 2-D video decoder capable of accepting NTSC, PAL or SECAM and all sub-formats. The high-speed Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) accepts both analog RGB and YPrPb inputs. An integrated VBI Slicer supports Closed Captioning (CC) and Teletext applications, and the built-in microprocessor enables full system control without external devices.
