Apogee and Infra-Com to Develop and Market Wireless Digital Technology

by August 18, 2004

NORWOOD, Mass. - Aug. 19, 2004 - Apogee Technology, Inc., a leading provider of digital audio amplification integrated circuits ("ICs"), today announced an agreement with Infra-Com Ltd. to jointly develop and market ICs that will enable manufacturers to provide high quality, pure digital wireless connectivity and amplification to home theater surround sound speakers. The innovative IC solutions will combine Infra-Com's IrGate(TM) non-line-of-sight (NLOS) Diffused Infra-red, high-speed digital wireless communication technology with Apogee's DDX® all-digital, high-efficiency amplification technology. The Israel-U.S. Bi-national Industrial Research and Development (BIRD) Foundation awarded this joint program $560,000 for research and development because of its technological and marketing innovation.

John Gitelman, Apogee's Director of Marketing and Product Development said, "Infra-Com's IrGate technology addresses the number one home theater system customer problem of cumbersome rear surround sound speaker connectivity. Current approaches using wireless RF-based connectivity and amplification have had limited success addressing this issue. RF solutions have been limited by quality problems related to RF interference, limited data transmission bandwidth and the need for manufacturers to develop different products to meet varying worldwide RF regulations. Infra-Com's IrGate uses a diffused infrared digital transmission. This robust approach is insensitive to RF interference and is usable worldwide without the regulation problems of certifying RF-based systems. In addition, IrGate's high bit rate capability allows multiple non-compressed digital audio channels to be transmitted with extremely low latency preserving the original digital quality of the signal. We are pleased to work with Infra-Com, a leader in diffused infrared wireless technology, to develop the next generation of wireless digital audio solutions. This cooperative effort is part of our strategy to broaden our product line by combining DDX with complementary technologies."

Uri Kanonich, Infra-Com's Chief Operating Officer said, "Apogee's all-digital, high efficiency DDX amplifier technology complements our IrGate technology for wireless speaker applications. The technology can be easily integrated with our digital transmit and receive Modem ICs to provide a pure digital path all the way from the audio source, through the IrGate wireless digital link to the active wireless powered speakers. We are delighted to be associated with a market leader like Apogee who has built a broad customer base on the strength of their DDX technology and their superior customer service. The integration of these two digital technologies will enable high quality, easy to install home theater systems."
