I've not just been in front of the camera for a number of years, I've also been an editor. And as an editor I've always had a fondness for a good display stand... or two. This beautiful piece of machinery isn't the severed arm of an unsuccessful terminator cyborg. It's Atdec's Levitate L-PB. The white version is the L-PW. It's a new desktop monitor stand that promises ease of installation, better wire management, and the ability to place even a heavy display just about anywhere.

Desktop monitor stands may not be sexy, but we like the think of the bigger picture. Whether its a dorm, office, or home office, computer monitors are being used for much more than just work. With the dawn of online video streaming, the desktop system can double as one of your entertainment hubs. And that's where this type of product becomes pretty attractive.

The new Levitate mount is a departure from what we're used to. It's attractive, yet functional. It's flexible, but sturdy - it's made of aluminum and stainless steel and can hold a display weighing nearly 20 pounds. That's a 27" display or more. Most mounts top out at 10 pounds, or a 24" display. On top of that, the Levitate lets you move the monitor around with ease, tilt it throughout a 110 degree range, and even rotate it to portrait view when needed. Also, instead of half-baked cable management schemes, this one actually works. You can route your display cable through the outer part of the arm, securing it with the provided clips. Once everything is in place, you cover the arm with the black or white color-accented covers and your Levitate is still free to bend and move in any direction while cleaning up your workspace.

desk mounting methodLet's talk about setup, because it was super-easy. You can desk mount it with an included clamp or by using the bolt-through method. The clamp, which is neat in that it secures from the top side of the desk, will work in a majority of applications. The bolt-through option is there for when you can't position the Levitate near the edge of the desk. Once secured, you can mount the head to your display and then drop it into the quick-release coupling through the use of a pushbutton mechanism. Atdec even gives you a nice plastic cover plate to hide the VESA mounting points and create a really finished look. The last step, before routing your cables, is to set all of the various tensions. You'll want to customize the tension to work well with whatever monitor you place in the L-PB or L-PW. A 20" monitor will have different settings than a 27" monitor, but each should be able to be configured so that the display can be moved around with ease. Atdec brands this as its Dynamic Lift Assistance technology and it really works.

In case you couldn't figure this out, we loved the mount. In fact, we've yet to experience a bad product from Atdec, a company which is based out of Australia. They seem to have a knack for building ergonomic and attractive products and the Levitate in yet another success in an ever-growing list. In fact, the only negative is the price. It's... $299. I know, that's crazy. So while this is one of the most beautiful, elegant and ergonomic desk mounts we've seen, you probably can't afford it. Then again, investing in a good mount with a 10 year warranty might have better yields than the stock market these days... Who knows.
