Optoma H31 Projector Review

We get asked fairly regularly to review more budget-minded products for our readers. In particular, everyone seems fascinated by the influx of lower-priced front projection systems that are competing for a large financial portion of the home theater display market. These front projection systems promise large viewing screens with an almost unbeatable price point. Compare, for example, a 92" front projection DLP system vs. a DLP-based rear projection unit and you are talking a potential savings of over 60-70%! It doesn't take a Nobel Lauriat to figure out where the bargain is. Sure there are trade-offs, mostly in terms of ambient light management and viewing distance, but if you can overcome these obstacles then you are looking at a tremendous opportunity.

Sony VPL-HS51A Cineza Projector Review

Sony VPL-HS51A Cineza Projector Review

Sony made a splash with its VPL-HS51 Cineza LCD projector at last year's CEDIA. It had a 6000:1 contrast ratio that, for possibly the first time, rivaled DLP, thanks in no small part to a dynamic iris system. While we wanted to get our hands on a review sample, our schedule pushed it off until we now got our hands on the newly improved VPL-HS51A. The 'A' denotes a slightly revised model that now boasts a 10,000:1 stated contrast ratio. With its price point coming in right at the sweet spot of those wanting to get into decent quality 720p projectors - we were anxious to run the Sony through our barrage of tests.

Yamaha LPX-510 LCD Projector Review

Yamaha LPX-510 LCD Projector Review

One of my favorite pastimes is sharing "movie nights" with my friends. Typically, "movie nights" have essentially been small gatherings where some of our friends came over and congregated in front of the big screen TV to watch the latest DVD release. These evenings are an opportunity to share what is a pretty impressive sound system with others - after all, what good is a great surround sound system if it's coveted in one's own home? Fast forward to this review period and the recent addition of the Yamaha LPX-510 3-chip LCD projector into my home theater system. With the addition of the 3-chip LCD projector, "Movie Nights" just got a whole lot more crowded.
