MacWorld Rumors, What's This Year's iPhone?

by January 14, 2008

Steve Jobs shall take the stage tomorrow and deliver unto his children of Mac - his keynote address. And Jobs shall hold aloft his latest offering from the Kingdom of Apple wherein his children shall rejoice in a single nerdgasm that shall shake the heaven and the Earth.

 And it will be good.

Admittedly it’s an exaggeration of MacWorld, but only a small one. MacWorld has turned into the event where we hear what the Apple camp has been sitting on all the way through CES.

MacBook: The fattest MacWorld 2008 rumor is a new ultra-thin MacBook. Speculation has Steve Jobs delivering the MacWorld keynote with a new MacBook in hand, about half the thickness of the current model. Further speculation from Andy Ihnatko of the Chicago Sun Times gives the new MacBook a touch-screen with flash memory, he describes a cross between an iPod Touch and an Apple notebook.

Hmmm… a flat, touch-screen, notebook computer sounds suspiciously like an Internet tablet. Perhaps its Apple’s strategy not to call it a tablet as that particular form factor has a history of never really catching the mainstream. But if any company can make a hit product out of a tablet it would be Apple.

3G iPhone: Another expected announcement is a 3G iPhone. When it comes to wireless data over a GSM network you just can’t do better than the data rates offered by 3G, at least for now. iPhone currently uses EDGE for its high speed data which is good but AT&T hasn’t upgraded to 3G in most major metropolitan areas for you to kick it with EDGE!

Streaming audio, video and downloading iPhone’s forthcoming third party applications make it a bandwidth hungry, wireless media monster. A new version of iPhone that plays to its strength as a media-phone will certainly help keep it elite.

Yes, that means AT&T will have to convince you that your old iPhone is no longer cool!
