Oppo BDP-83 Universal Blu-ray Player - Update

Oppo BDP-83 Universal Blu-ray Player - Update

We got our hands on some information about the pending release of Oppo Digital's universal Blu-ray player, due late December or early January to a handful of "guinea pig" early adopters/beta testers. That's right, we said "Universal" Blu-ray player. Except for Denon's ultra-high-end $3800 DVD-A1UDCI, this is the first universal BD player that will hit the market able to play DVDs, CDs, SACDs and DVD-Audio discs. And the best part is that it will hit the streets at a price somewhere between $499 and $599. Oh, and it will include Anchor Bay's VRS video processing... and do 1080p/24Hz output for both DVD and Blu-ray. And... and...

State of Blu-ray - CEDIA 2008

State of Blu-ray - CEDIA 2008

What is on the forefront of many consumers' minds is Blu-ray. Sure, it is all the talk on the forums and with enthusiasts, but when will John Q. Public start to care? We'll tell you when - when prices come down. At CEDIA this year we took a look at some of the newest Blu-ray players that are either already in stores or will be soon. Some companies seem to be pushing for as many features as possible at the lowest price while other seem to be skating along thinking that a Profile 1.1 player should sell just fine at $600 - $1000. Hey, don't forget that you can pay up to $2200 for a player if you really want a flagship model.

Oppo Digital BDP-83 Blu-ray Player Sneak Peek

Oppo Digital BDP-83 Blu-ray Player Sneak Peek

Last year Oppo discretely showed off a prototype of its DV-983H flagship universal DVD player at the DVDO booth. This year they didn't disappoint. Unannounced, we got wind of a non-functioning prototype Blu-ray player that was sitting at DVDO's CEDIA booth. What's this? An Oppo Blu-ray player? Could this be the holy grail so many were hoping and waiting for? Apparently yes - though Oppo was not releasing information about availability or pricing as of yet. Here's what we do know.

Oppo DV-983H Flagship Universal DVD Player Review

If this player had been released two years ago we'd say that Oppo has stolen the market. Though it faces stiff competition from Blu-ray, the DV-983H may be the greatest affordable universal DVD player to hit the market.

The Oppo DV-983H Universal DVD player supports all of the latest audio formats and does a darn good job with video too. Read our review.

Is the PS3 and BD 2.0 for you?

Is PS3 and BD 2.0 for you? Last week, Sony released the 2.20 firmware update for the PlayStation 3. Among the list of features was BD Profile 2.0, the coveted Holy Grail of Blu-ray playback. Is BD 2.0 really that useful? Will the guys with the BD 1.0 and 1.1 players be left wanting more? Can the PS3 work well as a standalone Blu-ray player for the masses who aren't into gaming?

Toshiba HD-A35 HD DVD Player

Toshiba HD-A35 HD DVD Player

Some may say that the Toshiba HD-A35 is the last of a dying breed as it is the current top-of-the line HD DVD player. With the Warner’s recent shift over to the Blu-ray camp, it may very well be. Of course, HD DVD will live on for a while longer and there are still a couple of larger movie studios backing the format. If you have a small library of HD DVDs, and are looking for a 1080p player that supports 24p or deep color, look no further. Since this format looks like it just might fade away, we’re guessing you’ll probably find a pretty good deal on the HD-A35, as well.

Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray Player Review

Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray Player Review

While the Sony BDP-S300 is an entry level Blu-ray player, entry level doesn't necessarily mean cheap. At $500, you're getting a capable high definition video player and that's about it. The unconversion ability of standard DVD's is lackluster at best and it only decodes Dolby Digital Plus. If you already have a capable upconverting DVD player and don't care about the decoding of Dolby TrueHD and the myriad of high definition DTS formats, this may be the Blu-ray player for you.

Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD Player Review

Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD Player Review

There are numerous other reviews for the A2 floating around the Internet, but sometimes a new perspective is a good thing, especially when this will surely be at a great price point very soon (rumor has it at under $200 by Thanksgiving) when the new A3, A30, and A35 come out the door. The Toshiba HD-A2 is the second generation of Toshiba’s HD DVD players. It is the entry level player and provides output of up to 720p or 1080i. It does NOT however output 1080p. Then again, with 1080i no picture information or resolution is lost or missing from a 1080p/24 source.

Toshiba Vardia HD DVD/HDD DVR First Look

Toshiba Vardia HD DVD/HDD DVR First Look

If you thought the format was was confusing, consumers are in for a surprise when Toshiba releases its new HD DVD recorder dubbed the RD-RX7. The recorder features the ability to write to HD DVD recordables as well as DVD-Rs. What makes it truly unique is that it has a special mode allowing users to record HD video to standard 4GB DVD-R/RW/RAMs. The way it does this is through a proprietary format that squeezes 2 hours of "HD" material onto that regular DVD.
