Denon AVR-588 AV Receiver Review [0.24] by gary,January 01, 2008 20:20
The new entry level Denon AV receiver is out and it is packed with more features than anybody has a right to expect for around $350. With plenty of connectivity options, features, and power, it’s hard to think of any reason a serious home theater enthusiast on a budget wouldn’t want to anchor their system with the AVR-588. While it is a very impressive A/V receiver, it will require some work to set it up in your theater and make full use all of its features.

If you haven't checked out the latest portable GPS offerings, you are missing out. In the last couple of years, the technology has really reached a saturation point that has brought in-car navigation to the masses, and the prices continue to fall while features and quality rise. TomTom is one of the leaders in portable GPS units, and I was thrilled at the chance to review one of their latest offerings, the GO 720.

Super Bowl XLIV will be transmitted to CBS in pristine, compression free HDTV thanks to Level 3 Communications Inc. Unfortunately, thanks to re-compression, most Cable and Satellite TV subscribers won’t get to see all of its pristine glory. It’s enough to make you want to put up an antenna and go over-the-air for the cleanest digital video signals possible.

HDMI 1.4 Spec Coming Soon [0.23] by tom,May 03, 2009 11:20
HDMI 1.3 not interesting enough for you? Welcome to the wonderful world of 1.4. While it hasn't hit shelves yet, apparently it will soon. According to a press release at HDMI, the new spec will include consolidation of HD video, HD audio and now high speed data with the addition of Ethernet in the HDMI cable, elimination of a S/PDIF cable by allowing a TV to send audio streams upstream to an A/V receiver for processing and playback over the HDMI cable, and 4kx2k and 3D high performance features.

Emotiva UMC-200 AV Preamp / Processor Review [0.23] by Gene,January 03, 2013 11:30
The Emotiva UMC-200 offers benchmark performance in virtually every category. For under $600 you get an A/V processor that supports all of the latest HD audio formats and sampling rates, a true analog audio path for purists, and fast HDMI switching. It’s easy enough to setup and operate without the need of referencing a user manual which is a big plus in my book. The real surprise of the UMC-200 was its fabulous analog preamp section. Plugged directly into a high quality DAC, you’ve got yourself a preamp that will rival any mid priced A/V receiver and give most dedicated analog preamps a run for their money. If you’re looking to break into the separates market at receiver level pricing, I can’t think of a better solution than the Emotiva UMC-200. Highly recommended!
