Luckily, some companies are still making turntables for those that actually use them. The Audio-Technica AT-LP1240-USB has just about everything you'd want in a turntable - integrated preamp, a high-torque multi-pole direct drive motor, a stroboscopic platter with a speed accuracy indicator, and much more. Plus, you can connect it to your computer and transform your vinyl into bits. Built with the DJ in mind, the Audio-Technica AT-LP1240-USB is so tough it may be the last turntable you buy...unless you win the lottery.

Samsung BD-E6500 Blu-ray with Dual HDMI Inputs and WiFi Preview

While we don't think the Samsung BD-E6500 will be the next Audiophile Blu-ray player, it very well may be our next Blu-ray player. The new Samsung includes dual HDMI inputs for connecting two different pieces of gear to it, and then running a single HDMI cable to your receiver/display. The BD-E6500 has Wi-Fi connectivity for streaming from DNLA devices and access to Samsung's Smart Hub. Most interestingly (though you may never use it), you can register (for a fee) your DVDs on UltraViolet from the player. The only thing we don't know about the player and the UltraViolet service? Price.

Panasonic 32bit 3D Blu-ray Players - When 24bit Just Isn't Enough

Panasonic put out six (6) new Blu-ray players at this year's CES 2012. They include four 3D models (DMP-BBT01, DMP-BDT500, DMP-BDT320, DMP-BDT220) and and two networking 2D models (the DMP-BD87 and the DMP-BD77). All four of the 3D models include Panasonic’s proprietary IPTV platform, VIERA Connect, while the 2D models feature IP VOD, a service that is different, but still offers a limited, though targeted, selection of such sites as Netflix, Vudu, CinemaNow and YouTube. What got us, though was the fact that three of these players feature 192kHz/32bit Audio DACs (not available on the DMP-BBT01). On top of that, the BDT500 includes high grade audio parts – gold plated terminals, high grade electric capacitor, better insulators...

SONY BDP-S780 3D Network Blu-ray Player Review

Sony offers some of the best value in Blu-Ray players today. After going through all the features and setup options this Blu-ray player offers and really diving into the network functions, I can say that the Sony BDP-S780 3D networking Blu-ray player would be a great addition to any home theater or video system that is in need for an upgrade to the latest in today’s tech. This model is their company flagship and comes packed with the most features for their line. We found the DBP-S780 to be among the fastest players out there to boot up and play a Blu-ray disc. Bottom line the BDP-S780 meets just about every requirement for a great Blu-Ray player today and won’t disappoint even the most feature hungry user.

Marantz CD6004 CD Player Preview

With a similar model number, the CD6004 from Marantz was obviously designed to work with the new PM6004 Integrated Amplifier to provide an affordable but impressive two channel system. All you need to do is provide the speakers. But the CD6004 isn't built with only Marantz's other components in mind, there is a lot more to it than that. With Made for iPod/Works with iPhone certification and front mounted USB port, the CD6004 is more than a simple high-end CD player. For $500, however, you have to ask yourself if the CD6004 does everything you need.

Oppo Pandora Firmware Upgrade for BDP-93/BDP-95 Blu-ray Players

There are few A/V products these days that I really get excited about. When Oppo released the BDP-95, we were pretty eager to get our hands on one. From its benchmark performance to flawless operation, the BDP-95 left us wanting very little. But, of course, I particularly like the ability to stream music sources such as Pandora to my family room system. At the time, Oppo didn't support this feature, until now.... We are happy to see that Oppo is vigorously supporting their products with routine firmware upgrades. Pandora support is icing on the cake for us. We look forward to seeing what else Oppo has in store for future upgrades. In the meantime, we’re loving it as is!

Denon DBP-A100 Universal Blu-ray Player Video Review

In celebration of Denon's 100th Anniversary, the company put out a series of products designed to represent their very best in each category. The first of these products we were able to get our hands on was their $2500 DBP-A100 Universal Audio/Video Player. Now, this player will do CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray Discs, SACD, DVD-Audio and play those formats back with the most pristine audio and video quality believed to be possible. There are no real networking features for streaming movies or music. On the audio side, everything seems really well-developed unless you have a need for balanced XLR outputs, which the DBP-A100 doesn't have. Aside from that, what we have here is a very nice, rugged and celebratory universal player. For custom installers who want to surprise their clients with an anniversary edition product that carries some brand recognition with it, the Denon A100 is going to hit the spot.

Pioneer BDP-140 and Elite BDP-52FD and BDP-53FD Blu-ray Players Preview

Pioneer Electronics has made Blu-ray players for as long as Blu-ray has been around. In prior years, however, they had partnered with Sharp in manufacturing their players and the results were far from noteworthy. While Sharp is doing fantastic things with their new Elite LED Television line, Pioneer decided to take back their Blu-ray players and do them in-house. Today we got to see the three new models which range in price from $199 to $499. The three players are the entry level Pioneer BDP-140 and two Elite models, the BDP-52FD and BDP-53FD. The players each have reduced loading times significantly and they can be used wirelessly with Pioneer's optional AS-WL300 network adapter. They can also stream audio and video from Pandora, YouTube and NetFlix.

Onkyo Audio BD-SP809 THX Blu-ray Player Preview

Onkyo has been known for their full-featured receivers for quite some time. Their newest Blu-ray player, the BD-SP809 looks to continue that trend. Its got THX certification, 3D support, dual HDMI outputs, DLNA 1.5 certification, Netflix 3.0, Blockbuster, Film Fresh, and VUDU streaming, Marvell Qdeo upscaling, and 297 MHz/12-Bit NSV DACs. For $600, it is a solid player. But the question is, how does it stand up to the Oppo offerings? Not bad...if you aren't a power user.

Cambridge Audio 751BD Universal 3D Blu-ray Player Preview

We're sure the Cambridge Audio 751BD Universal 3D Blu-ray player is going to find an audience. While it does share some technology with players less than half its MSRP, there do seem to be upgrades (mostly on the audio side) from the competition. The price is a little high for what you get but, when their consumers are unlikely to buy from an online only manufacturer, that probably won't matter. Compared to some of the "high end" universal blu-ray players that have hit the market, the Cambridge Audio 751BD is a solid offering.

Onkyo BD-SP309 3D Blu-ray Player First Look

In a post Oppo Blu-ray world, the only thing you can do to compete it to release a player at a lower price point. Onkyo has come in at half the Oppo's price with their new BD-SP309 Blu-ray player. That's a pretty significant savings. But the question is what features did they have to cut? Well, not the important one. 3D is on board as is dual USB ports. You can stream Internet radio, Pandora, Netflix, and VUDU natively. The downside? If you don't have an HDMI input somewhere, you're out of luck. While power users will want to look elsewhere, those wanting 3D and not really caring much about anything else can save a few hundred dollars over other options with the Onkyo BD-SP309.

Toshiba BDX3000 Blu-ray Player Video Review

Toshiba is trying to float on top of a veritable sea of products with its BDX3000 3D Blu-ray player. It has just about everything you could possibly need: high quality BD playback, upscaling of DVDs to 1080p, Netflix, Pandora, VUDU and (if they are still in business) Blockbuster Video on Demand. It's also 3D-compatible and includes integrated Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi means that if you have a wireless router that supports 802.11 a/b/g or n, you don't need to run a cable to your TV in order to enjoy streaming movies from Netflix or VUDU, or music from Pandora. Toshiba has included the same glassy front on the BDX2700 that it includes in some of its top of the line televisions. That, the flush tray, and the capacitance touch controls, give the player a look that says it's OK to put this thing out in the open. It's also not very deep. At just over 8-inches from front to back, this is one product that doesn't make a nuisance of itself - you can put it in front of your TV or place it just about anywhere.

Oppo BDP-93 Universal 3D Blu-ray Player Full Review

How do you upgrade the number one solution for Blu-ray on the market? It's hard, but Oppo Digital did it by adding 3D Blu-ray capability to their new BDP-93 (still) Universal Blu-ray player. Oh, and they changed the chassis to eliminate the one thing Lexicon's Oppo seemed to improve on their player last year. Plus they also added more network functionality in the form of Netflix and Blockbuster on Demand streaming movie services. Come to think of it, they switched over to the ever-increasingly, highly regarded Marvell QDEO video processor and even added a second flexible HDMI output that can be used for dual monitors, or for sending just audio to an AV receiver. Oh, and the player supports wireless-N networking out of the box. Holy cow, they did a lot, and I'm still in the intro of the review. Hold tight, this may take a while.

Oppo BDP-93 & BDP-95 Universal Blu-ray Player Measurements Report

Oppo proved that they can build a better mouse trap with their new BDP-9x series of Blu-ray players. Both players exhibited benchmark audio performance while the BDP-95 exceeded those marks to the point where we were measuring the limits of our $40k Audio Precision HDMI analyzer. Our tests proved that the BDP-93 and BDP-95 Blu-ray players are everything so many other so called "high end" players wish they could be and much more. We haven't run across any higher priced players that can better the overall performance of the BDP-93, let alone the BDP-95. Both are handsomely finished, giving their high performance a classy look. But is the BDP-95 worth 2X the cost of the BDP-93? And this is what is so great about the new BDP-95: You don't have sacrifice the latest and greatest features to have state of the art audio. If all you really want is a great player with universal disc support (meaning it plays DVDs, CDs, Blu-rays, DVD-As, and SACDs plus lots more), 3D, and Netflix, the BDP-93 is a great choice. But if you are really worried about audio, specifically two channel audio, it's going to be really hard to beat the Oppo BDP-95. Considering the price (under a grand), it is probably impossible to beat.

Toshiba BDX2700 Blu-ray Player Review

It's hard to stay on top, and Toshiba is finding itself adrift amidst a veritable sea of Blu-ray players with its BDX2700. The one feature that sticks the neck f the BDX2700 above water and makes people take notice is its integrated Wi-Fi. But somehow, I never indulged in getting custom molded in-ear monitors made, instead opting for the generic fit versions made by such companies as Shure and Future Sonics. I had varying degrees of success and enjoyment using them in live music applications and usually just preferred the old school floor wedge monitors that musicians have relied upon since dinosaurs roamed the Earth. So when the opportunity came along to field-test the new JH Audio JH-5 Pro headphones, I was pretty excited. The JH stands for Jerry Harvey, the true pioneer of in-ear monitoring. Jerry is responsible for Ultimate Ears line of custom monitors prior to Logitech purchasing the company. His UE11 Pro is pretty much the standard to which all IEM's are compared to prior to starting JHA.

Integra THX Certified DBS-50.2 Blu-ray Player First Look

At $700 MSRP, the THX Certified Integra DBS-50.2 certainly isn't breaking the bank. LG has tackled this problem by filling its new BD590 with all of the network features you could want, including built-in 802.11n wireless, Netflix, VUDU, Pandora, YouTube and more. But they went a few steps further, adding USB connectivity for removable drives and even an internal 250GB hard drive. You can use the drive to transfer files from USB or discs (like a CD) to the internal storage and thus copy movies, music and photos to the drive for easy playback. The on-screen display then lets you recall specific files, or play back an entire folder or the contents of the drive. This essentially turns your LG Blu-ray player into a media server that can be used by the whole family.

Pioneer 3D Blu-ray Players First Look

For the first time, Pioneer previewed its line of Blu-ray 3D players, which included two Elite models and a "regular (unleaded) model. If you're not interested in the 7.1 outs (or DVD-A, SACD, 3D, or a host of other streaming features available right now on players that cost less), the Onkyo BD-SP808 is for you.

Dune BD Prime 3.0 Blu-ray Player First Look

Very rarely does a product come along that has us at a loss for words. It isn't that we can't figure out what it is (OK, occasionally with some of the esoteric gear that's the case), but that we have a hard time explaining it. Such is the case with the Dune BD Prime 3.0. Obviously, it's a Blu-ray player. It's also a media server and a networked storage device. But it is so much more. Maybe it would be easier to start off with what it doesn't do - SACD or DVD-A. As far as we can tell, that's about it.

Sony BDP-S1700ES Blu-ray 3D Player First Look

Adding to its high-end 3D capabilities Sony has announced new entries into its ES line that feature HDMI 1.4 capable receivers and, more significantly for this article, the BDP-S1700ES 3D Blu-ray player. The new Sony equipment is designed to sit alongside your BRAVIA HDTVs with 3D capabilities. But if you want to spend mid-fi money on products with the Sony logo, you’ll now have to go to the brick-and-mortar store to buy your hardware as internet dealers are getting the-pinch. Sony has basically announced that the new products are available exclusively at specialty AV shops and custom installers.

Denon DBP-1611UD Universal Blu Player First Look

The Denon DBP-1611UD is the new entry level Blu-ray player from the electronics giant. At $399, not only is it a full universal player, but it is 3D ready with a planned fall update. The Denon DBP-1611UD will be DLNA 1.5 certified, has DivX HD playback capability, and streams Netflix and YouTube. Plus, we do a full comparison to the player we were all talking about before this week - the Oppo BDP-83.

Vincent Audio C-60 CD Transport First Look

The Vincent Audio C-60 CD Transport takes a Reeses Peanutbutter cup approach to design - they mixed their solid state with their tubes. The C-60 has a solid state/tube output stage that can be selected from the front of the unit or from the least useful remote we've seen in a long time. Will it sell? At $4695 a pop, we're guessing they don't have to sell too many to turn a profit.

Oppo BDP-80 Universal Blu-ray Player First Look

The BDP-80 is the new universal player from Oppo positioned below their venerable BDP-83 model. That means that not only does it play Blu-rays and DVDs but also SACDs and DVD-As. With just a few corners cut, the BDP-80 comes in at only $289. That's right, while others are trying to charge multiple of thousands for universal Blu-ray playback, Oppo keeps dropping their prices. If you're looking for a Universal Blu-ray player for a bedroom system or small den, the BDP-80 may just be your ticket.

Lexicon BD-30 Blu-ray Player (Oppo BDP-83 Clone) Review

It's an Oppo BDP-83. Normally we'd launch into a statement like this with more tact. We may, for example, wax eloquent about the Lexicon BD-30's beautiful chassis or it's billet aluminum front face. We could tell you about the heft of the unit, or the fact that comes double boxed with enough padding to warrant throwing it off the FedEx or UPS truck while it's still moving. While all of that is true, the Lexicon BD-30 is still an Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray Player. And what's more, it's not just using the same parts - they actually stuck the player inside - chassis and all. This would be OK, were it not for the $3000 premium and THX certification. As Sherlock Holmes would say: The game is afoot!

Oppo BDP-83SE / BDP-83 Blu-ray Analog Audio Measurement Supplemental

When Oppo announced a hot rod version of their highly regarded BDP-83 Blu-ray player, it piqued our interest. Considering the stock player demonstrated stellar audio and video performance via the HDMI outputs and respectable analog audio performance, we figured it would simply be icing on the cake for Oppo to offer a supped up version and evidently they agreed, hence the BDP-83SE was born. As we began our exhaustive analog audio measurement process, we discovered some operational and performance issues on both players which are noted in this report. Fellow Oppo users fear NOT as we have made Oppo fully aware of these issues and they are working on solutions as you read this article.

OPPO BDP-83SE Special Edition Blu-ray Disc Player First Look

The Oppo BDP-83SE is a "Special Edition" version of the Oppo BDP-83 Universal Blu player. For an extra $400 (yes, that almost doubles the price of the original) you get upgrades only a connoisseur could love. Namely, you're getting an upgraded audio section, a better power supply, RS-232 support, and a faceplate with the words "Special Edition" on the front. This player should surely be a hit with the esoteric crowd.

JVC XV-BP11 Blu-ray Player First Look

JVC's new XV-BP11 entry level Blu-ray player has many of the bells and whistles you'd expect from a current generation Blu-ray player except for BD-Live. While $200 may seem like a lot to pay for a Profile 1.1 player, that doesn't mean it isn't without its merit - like our supposition that the price will drop like a stone come Black Friday.

Denon DVD-A1UDCI Universal Blu-ray Player Review

The Denon DVD-A1UDCI Universal Blu-ray player exemplifies flagship performance and status from a company that continually strives to be the leader in high performance audio gear and transports. It flawlessly plays every disc format currently relevant in the marketplace. The fact that every output is always active on this player gives an end user and/or installer almost endless configuration options on how one could utilize this player. Whether I played back a Blu-ray, SACD, DVD-A or standard DVD, I was always in shock and awe at the end result. During this review process, I got a glimpse of a feeling professional car reviewers get when they have the opportunity to test drive that $300k Ferrari, only I didn’t have change my pants at the end of the test drive. Still, for the added money, you are getting top of the line components, cutting edge technology, and the piece of mind that you could have spent thousands more. While we don't expect the DBP-4010UDCI to fly off the shelves at this price point, for the user that has to have (almost) everything, this is the player for them.

Pioneer Elite BDP-09FD Blu-ray Player First Look

Pioneer displayed their new Elite BDP-09FD flagship Blu-ray player at CEDIA 2009 claiming it has become the world's first Blu-ray Disc Player to achieve THX certification. But, the lack of DVD-A and SACD support is a bit unsettling considering that Pioneer is positioning this player as their reference to appeal to audiophiles and videophiles alike. Despite its shortcomings, the BDP-09FD is quite a sturdy built player weighing in at 30lbs. It has the look and feel of a high end product you'd expect from Pioneer Elite. What was most impressive was the amount of network features available to the player and it's almost mouth-watering price of just $250. Based on my bench tests and real world usage, I can safely say the BDP-83 is everything and more that everyone has been claiming it to be. It’s easy to setup and use and the user manual is among the most concisely written and organized I’ve come across for any DVD/Blu-ray machine. Imagine for under $500, you can enjoy your entire collection of CD, DVD, DVD-A, SACD and Blu-ray discs on this affordable, highly usable dream machine!

Lexicon BD-30 Universal Blu-ray Player First Look

Lexicon is touting their new BD-30 Blu-ray player as "future-proof." We've heard that claim before from a number of manufacturers. The BD-30 is a true universal player in that it can play CDs, DVDs, SACDs, DVD-As, and Blu-rays. At $3500, it's everything you could ask for... except for a bargain. One thing that is clear is that Lexicon is not really marketing this player to the common man (or woman). If you didn't get that from the price, then you will from the language of the release. There are constant references to custom installers specifically in relation to the RS-232 support but also in general. It it obvious that Lexicon expects this product to be marketed to those with the money to afford a home theater installation specialist. Upon closer inspection it looks as though Lexicon simply repackaged the Oppo BDP-83, and got it THX certified. At roughly $3k more than the Oppo its a hard sale for all but those loyal to the brand.
