Waiting in line three days at an IKEA store for a free chair; bogo sales; no interest for 90 days; no payments till 2075; we can't get enough. "Recession proof" stores are successful because the stores provide a good deal. The Wal-Marts, Targets, Rooms to Go's, etc. prey on the American dream of getting the deal of a lifetime. There are also people that are that looking for big sound out of small speakers. While the first is relatively easy to find, the second is pretty much impossible. Boston Acoustics is taking their stab at it with their new SoundWare XS 5.1 Surround Speaker System. Available in black and white, the speaker system is designed to be shelf, wall or corner mounted. At just about a 4" cube, the system should have little problem blending into the background.

Atlantic Technology 1400 SR-z Height Speakers

Dolby ProLogic IIz is a brand new DSP. It has only recently started showing up on home theater receivers. The Onkyo TX-SR607 has only started hitting store shelves and already Atlantic Technology had a speaker optimized for th PLIIz processing. The 1400 SR-z is a selectable dipole/bipole speaker with a compact size and shallow profile. At just over a foot wide, less than half a foot deep, and 8" tall, they are definitely compact. They are only 7lbs each so hanging them shouldn't be much of a problem.

MCM Custom Audio 50-908 5.0 Speaker System Review

When getting into the home theater game, the biggest stumbling block for early adopters is price. The MCM Custom Audio 50-908 speakers consist of the 50-9085 bookshelf speakers and the 50-9080 center channel. As an entry level speaker, the MCM Custom Audio 50-908's blew me away. While they are obviously limited by their price point, what they do manage to do is overperform. For just over $100 you can have a 5.0 system that will not only introduce you to surround sound but not break the bank at the same time.

The Speaker Company TSAT-1000-HT8-B System Review

This is the finest sounding compact system on the cheap ($399 for 5.1) that I’ve heard with a fit and finish that is second to none. The system works extremely well together mated with the ASW-8 subwoofer. Considering that tSc offers a FREE 30 day trial period with FREE shipping both ways, there is simply no risk in buying it. These speakers are incredibly well-built, and do very well in a near-field environment. They are beautiful to look at and the new Bravus dual 8-inch subwoofer leaves a good impression. To say that it has been pushed to its limits in this review is probably an understatement. But did it pass? In my book - yes… for movies. Are you going to need a DVD player or other source? Yes. Are you going to need a subwoofer? Definitely. But for movies, what you'll get is a convincing facsimile of surround from a single source, undeniable cool factor, and convenience galore.

EMP ECA-4 & ECA-44 Compact Satellite Speaker System Review

This is a must have solution for any application requiring a compact clutter free and inconspicuously mounted installation. For a limited time, EMP is extending more than 50% off their MSRP plus FREE shipping which makes this system even more attractive and a very uncommon value. Everyone either has a home theater system, or everyone wants one. With the prices falling on flat panel displays and projectors, just about everyone can afford to put together a very nice home theater system. However, not everyone is concerned with having the absolute best when it comes to the audio portion of the system. Nobody wants junk, but most don't want to spend more on the speakers than on the rest of the system. JBL has put together a nice little system that will fill the needs for those wanting to obtain some decent surround sound to go along with the rest of their home theater and not break the bank in the process.

Klipsch Quintet SL

Some people are into clean lines - they don't just want a speaker that looks good, it's got to be the right shape. With the advent of flat panel displays, wall mounting, and the "ultra clean" look, floorstanding speakers have begun to look a little out of place. These new "high tech" living rooms demand a new "high tech" speaker. The Klipsch Quintet SL home theater speaker package attempts to satisfy the delicate sensibilities of the modern decorator without offending the ears of the audio inclined.

Yamaha NS-SP7800PN

While your budding audiophile may be worried about performance to the exclusion of everything else, many others have other concerns. Not everyone wants surround sound in every room (though we can't imagine why). Boston Acoustics is answering this need with the TVee Model Two - a single horizontal speaker solution paired with a wireless subwoofer. Don't misunderstand, the Boston Acoustics TVee Model Two is NOT a pseudo-surround solution - it is strictly stereo. I saw everything from a portable speaker that you might use out by the pool to systems designed to be used with traditional full-range speakers. They are controlled by a compacted "SPA" digital amplifier using the patented NIROSON® DSP (digital signal processing). The NIRO system banks itself on consumers who will appreciate easy set-up (there are really just two wires.) The system is a single speaker and subwoofer that can be placed just about anywhere, including on a wall or above or below a flat panel television. Obviously, for people who cannot fathom arranging multiple surround speakers in their listening space, this solution will appeal on a grand scale.

Cerwin-Vega! CVHD 5.1 Review

For years, Cerwin-Vega! has been known as a company that produces LOUD speakers (they seem to harbor this thought with their tagline "The LOUD Speaker Company"). The slim profile CVHD 5.1 system and hi-tech looks complement many decors and more importantly the expectations of what home theater speakers should look like in many consumers' minds. For $1000, there are a lot of speaker sets out there that are better (but probably don't have as good a sub) but I've seen this set on sale online for as little as $550. For $550, they are a very good deal. The sub is going to destroy any HTiB "bass module" it comes across and you can pump enough sound through the satellites to fill a large room without frying your amp. While they have their limitations, for the right person, at the right price, they could be the right set.

NHT Verve IV 5.1 Speaker System Review

Did you know that over 40% of NHT employees are musicians? Knowing that little bit of trivia helps one to understand why the company has such a solid reputation with both audiophiles, and yes, musicians. So, Murrel, I guess this one is for you. Before receiving the speakers, I perused the Radiient website to get an idea of what I was in for. The speaker package is a 5.0 system which I was both happy and disheartened by. Happy, because I didn’t have move that brick of a sub that is the EP500, but disheartened because I like testing full systems. The speakers looked more like a satellite system with fairly small speakers probably crossed over pretty high… until I looked at the specs – frequency response down to 50Hz on the mains? Hold on, and what does that price say…$499? Intrigued, I was glad to hear that they would be shipping immediately.

Klipsch THX Ultra2 Loudspeaker System Review

For nearly six decades Klipsch Audio Technologies has held an enviably successful position in the American consumer audio industry. That sort of longevity (given the competitive, volatile nature of the speaker biz) is, in and of itself, a tremendous and rare accomplishment. That their success has come about with a product line focused on horn-loaded loudspeaker systems for both the pro and home audio use makes this achievement even more impressive. And Klipsch knows horns; some of the best & brightest loudspeaker engineers, both past & present have contributed their talents to the Klipsch product lines over the years. And it all began with one person, with an idea, and a rented tin shed in Hope, Arkansas.

SVS SBS-01 Speaker System Review

It was like a flare went up on the Internet the day that SVS released their new 5.1 speaker system. SVS has had a reputation for years as an excellent subwoofer manufacturer offering great subs for rock bottom prices. To say that SVS has a loyal following is akin to suggesting that sharks LIKE to eat or that flowers ENJOY sunshine. SVS inspires loyalty so intense, it borders on fanaticism. Needless to say, when Gene called me and asked if I wanted to review the new SVS (that’s as far as he got before I said yes). Like anyone that has spent any time on the Internet, I can’t help but be curious about the SVS subs. Given the opportunity to play with their new speaker system was just too good to pass up.

Orb Audio Mod2 Speakers Review

Not all of us have the luxury or the ability to spend thousands of dollars on high priced, high performing, extremely accurate but outrageously ugly speaker systems. And those of us that have that ability may often have to deal with a "significant other" whose love of feng shui may be as strong as our love for tight, accurate, and heart stopping bass. All of a sudden, we have to explain why small, cute speakers are simply inadequate for producing the type of sound quality that an audiophile in training longs to possess. And for the most part, this is true until now. Enter Orb Audio. Sold online though their website only, Orbs are offered in a variety of packages: Single Orbs (Mod 1), double Orbs (Mod 2), or any combination you want including mixing and matching the four available finishes (white, black, hand polished steel, and hand antiqued copper).

Pioneer HTP-4600 Home Theater Review

The world of home theater has practically exploded over the last several years, with everyone scrambling to purchase AV systems to bring that theatrical sound into their living rooms. Whether you choose to credit (or perhaps blame?) Hollywood or rising ticket prices for the new trend, home theater is certainly becoming a realization for more and more families. But what happens when you introduce these surround sound systems into existing living rooms?

Canton CD 300 Series Home Theater System

With the new trend towards flat panel displays and silver colored electronics (at least for televisions) it is no wonder several manufacturers are releasing space-saving loudspeaker designs custom-tailored for the person living with 21st century technology. We previously reviewed Canton's Karat Reference Series loudspeakers and found them to be competitive performers for their price. Now it was time to see if this German company could mesh form with function and not leave us wanting for more.

Yamaha YSP-1 Digital Sound Projector Review

Years from now home theater enthusiasts may be reading whole articles on the available models within the Digital Sound Projector category. For the present though, there exists only the category-defining Yamaha YSP-1, a brilliant marriage of compact form with simply amazing multi-channel synthesis capability.

Logitech Z-5500 Speakers for Gaming and Digital Multimedia Review

Recently, Audioholics has been working towards establishing a solid gaming review environment and bringing these additional perspectives to our readers. For years now, the home theater industry has been seeking gaming convergence, or at the least, a symbolic way to tap into the multi-billion dollar gaming industry - and vice versa. With the pending re-launch of Reference System 2 as a gaming/home theater hybrid environment, we thought a review of the THX certified Logitech Z-5500 Multimedia speakers would be an excellent way for the room to begin its maiden voyage.
