This system is designed by Boston Acoustics to be a simplistic "right out of the box" solution for surround sound. The 100-watt SoundWare XS Digital Cinema Surround Sound Speaker system delivers the same elegant, ultra-compact system we looked at earlier, but it also introduces some improved connectivity, with on-board decoding and the ability to handle various audio input sources. Inputs now include optical digital and analog Inputs and the SoundWare XS Digital Cinema System now allows for Dolby Digital decoding as well as Boston’s Digitally Optimized (discrete) Virtual Surround processing. The system is also Bluetooth enabled for music streaming and the remote can learn other commands to be more useful in your home theater.

Samsung HT-E5500W 5.1 Blu-ray 3D Home Theater System Preview

Central Hall is alive as Samsung updates its revised line of home theater systems, including 5.1 Channel Wireless 3D Blu-ray Home Theater System, model HT-E5500W. This system lacks the tower speakers or vacuum tube tech of the higher-priced Samsung HT-E6730W, but its strengths lie in the Crystal Amp Plus technology, which offers pure digital audio playback and quality while also managing and smoothing out volume jumps. And Samsung didn't skimp in the video either. Both the HT-E6730W and HT-E5500W Home Theater Systems offer built-in WiFi for easy access to a new world of web-connected entertainment via a full web browser, as well as hundreds of premium apps from leading brands such as AOL, CNBC, ESPN, MTV, NBA and The Broadway Channel through Samsung Apps. Users can also choose and manage their social networks via popular services such as Facebook or Twitter.

Samsung HW-E550 Soundbar & Wireless Sub Preview

Sound bars are nothing new, but Samsung is attempting to multi-purpose its new HW-E550 by giving it greater flexibility of placement. The new HW-E550 Surround Sound Bar with 3D Depth Sound can either be placed horizontally below a TV or split into two sound vertical soundbar speakers. That is way cool and extremely versatile in a way that we hadn't seen before. Additionally, by attaching each speaker to an included base, the soundbar can also morph into a traditional looking 2.1-channel system with half-tall speakers. The HW-E550 has two HDMI inputs and one HDMI output so users can easily connect to Blu-ray players, set-top boxes and gaming consoles. And, support for HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC) means that you can use all of the inputs of your TV and feed the sources back to your soundbar using that method.

Samsung HT-E6730W 7.1 Blu-ray 3D Home Theater System Preview

Central Hall is alive as Samsung debuts a new range of home theater systems and the first of those was their 7.1 Channel Blu-ray 3D Home Theater System, model HT-E6730W. This is the first home theater system to feature Samsung's proprietary vacuum tube amplifier technology. Basically, the system incorporates both vacuum tubes and a digital amplifier into one unit. Vacuum tubes are not new to audio - in fact they are extremely old, but there have been many discussions among audio enthusiasts over the benefits of digital and vacuum tube amplifiers. Many appreciated the pure sound that digital amplifiers deliver even in a small form factor, but felt that vacuum tube amplifiers create a richer and fuller sound. We think they help energy efficiency since they both product warm audio AND warm air to help heat your home during the winter. Go Green!

MonoPrice 5.1 Home Theater Speakers & Subwoofer Video Review

First of all, we really don't like TV speakers. They just don't sound good. They're designed as a necessary evil and most of the time they are firing off the back of the set into the wall and bouncing back to you with, hopefully, some kind of intelligibility left intact. So there's a compelling reason why you'd want to add a sound bar or a 5.1 system where you can offload your audio into a different set of speakers that's I dunno - maybe at least POINTING at you? MonoPrice's 5.1 Channel Home Theater Satellite Speakers & Subwoofer is a starting point, nothing more. That's right, we're not going to wax eloquent about the incredible quality of the drivers or the deep authoritative bass response. BUT... BUT... it's a better experience and sound than any TV speaker I've yet heard.

Wharfedale DX-1 HTiB Preview

For a Home Theater in a Box, $800 for the Wharfedale DX-1 is somewhere near the upper-mid of the price range. This is targeted for the consumer that isn't afraid to pay a bit of money for decent speakers but is afraid of introducing large speakers into their space. The wall mounting for the satellites is convenient. The center channel has to be shelf mounted so CRT folks will take note that the center channel offers no magnetic shielding.
The satellite speakers are rather bass deficient so a higher crossover setting in your receivers bass management system of about 100Hz is recommended to compensate. As a result greater care may be needed for placement of the sub to help it blend into the system better. For those wanting a HTIB solution alternative to lousy cubed speakers at an affordable price, the Wharfedale DX-1 certainly fits the bill for well under $1k.

Vizio VHT215 Home Theater Sound Bar w/Wireless Sub Preview

Price, location, and buzzwords - that's what sells sound bars. Performance is of little note when a consumer is looking to pack one more thing in his or her cart with that brand new, huge display. With an MSRP of $320 and a retail price sure to be less, the Vizio VHT215 Sound Bar has everything this type of consumer is looking for. Wireless subwoofer? Check. 3D? Check. Glossy and high-tech looking? Check. On sale? Probably, check. While the specifications on this bar are so slim that they don't even list the size, that doesn't matter. Performance doesn't enter into the picture when making an impulse buy.

EMPtek E56Ci Center and E55Wi Surround Speaker Preview

We've had great experiences with the EMPtek line of speakers, as have many of our forum members. This is a line for those that aren't willing to sacrifice looks OR performance but have a limited budget. While the new E55Wi Surround speaker fills the much needed void of a dedicated on-wall surround in the line, the E56Ci introduces a new, more powerful center channel to keep up with the larger E55Ti towers. The new EMPtek offerings look just as good as the previous ones and we suspect they'll be greeted enthusiastically. And before you ask - yes, we are going to get these in for a full-fledged review.

Energy Power Bar Soundbar Preview

In what appears to be an effort to be completely un-searchable on Google, Energy has released their Power Bar Soundbar. Yeah, search for Energy Power Bar and see how many speakers pop up. As you may be aware, there are two types of bar speakers - soundbars and surroundbars. The surroundbars try to simulate a full 5.1 speaker setup with a single speaker. A Soundbar, like the new Energy Power Bar, is only attempting to provide an improved two-channel experience. While both have their place, we tend to prefer the more attainable goal of the Soundbar solutions. When they come with a wireless subwoofer, we are all the more intrigued.

Atlantic Technology FS-7.1/SB-900 Surround Bar/Sub Preview

Atlantic Technology has revoiced and redesigned the enclosure of their FS-7.1 Surround Bar. They promise the angled sides will reduce the reliance of their speaker on side walls to get the sound around the room convincingly. This remains to be seen (or, rather, heard). The $350 SB-900 sub reaches down to 32Hz and looks to be a pretty good value. But at $950, the FS-7.1 Surround Bar faces some pretty stiff competition. Time will tell how well the market accepts this entry into a very crowded market. Personally we find their new H-Pas Soundbar more appealing.

Definitive Technology Mythos XTR-SSA5 Surround Bar Preview

At $999 for the Def Tech Mythos XTR-SSA5 Surround Bar and $799 for the Mythos XTR-SSA3 Sound Bar, these aren't inexpensive solutions. But they very well may be the right one for your installation - especially if you are looking for a speaker that won't sit 2" off the wall (something that isn't easy to find). With that sort of profile plus aircraft-grade aluminum enclosure and included wall and adjustable shelf mounts, it's hard to see how these new Mythos XTR bars WON'T sell.

Aperion Audio Verus Surround Dipole/Bipole Speaker Preview

The new Aperion Audio Verus Surround speaker shares the driver of the Forte line but the price of the Grand line. At $299 each, you're getting a switchable dipole/bipole speaker with two 4.25" woofers with coaxially mounted 1" tweeters. Ported with included wall mounts, the Verus Surround is rated down to 90Hz at -3dB and 80Hz at -6dB. They utilize a 4" Clay/Ceramic filled Polypropylene Cone woofer and a 1" Titanium Dome tweeter. The speakers present an 8 ohms nominal, 6 ohm minimum load which should be no problem for any amp on the market these days. At 5.75” wide x 9.25” high x 8.3” deep and weighing 6.5 lbs, the PSB Imagine mini speaker should fit into nearly any environment. The question is whether your budget can fit these $760 a pair mini speakers.

Martin Logan ElectroMotion C2 and FX2 Center and Surround Speakers Preview

Hot on the heels of our interview with David Janszen on Electrostatic speakers, Martin Logan has announced a few new players in their bid to move their speakers out of dedicated two channel listening rooms to the home theater. The ElectroMotion C2 center and FX2 surround speakers share Martin Logan's new Folded Motion XT thin film radiating tweeters paired with paper cone woofers in a ported box. The design looks solid, the specs impressive, and the price...surprisingly low. For just under $4100, you can have a 5.0 system that will reach down to 42Hz (if the Martin Logan specs are to be believed). That's not a bad deal considering this is Martin-Logan and electrostatic speakers often cost considerably more. The TVee Model 30 is a new premium soundbar solution from Boston Acoustics and they seem to be catering to consumers who actually want a bit more out of their simplified speaker solutions. The big deal with the new TVee 30 is that they added a center channel, making it a full 3.1 system. They also made the subwoofer larger, it now has a 7" driver instead of the 6" that comes with the TVee Models 20 and 25. It also accepts Bluetooth audio. This is possibly the best $600 you can spend if you're looking for an all-in-one solution for a smaller room or home theater system. It will blow away the speakers on your TV, but more than that, it will open up many possibilities for enjoying your music and movies.

Paradigm MilleniaOne Speaker System First Look

What does your mom want for Mother's day more than a small speaker system? Well, probably just about anything but if you have to get her speakers, Paradigm may have an option for you. The Paradigm MilleniaOne system consists of five small satellites that are 7.75" tall, 4.5" wide and 5.75" deep. They have an extended port for increased bass and all aluminum drivers and enclosure. The MilleniaSub is also a diminutive 14" by 18.375" by 8.875" and a paltry 24 pounds. Like the speakers it comes in either white or black but with a satin finish rather than high gloss. It has a 300 watt class D amp and a built in wireless receiver (transmitter sold separately). With the sub costing more than all the speakers combined, this one might be a tough sell for consumers

Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1 Channel HTiB First Look

If you're looking for a full featured HTiB solution with the ability to upgrade as you go, Onkyo's HT-S5400 is a great way to go. $600 certainly won't break the bank, even in this economy. Technology in the Onkyo HT-S5400 is very impressive given the price with things like Audyssey 2ED/Dynamic Volume/Dynamic EQ, Dolby ProLogic IIz, and HDMi 1.4 with 3D support and Audio Return Channel showing up. We're actually surprised they are able to shove this much tech into such an affordable package. Four HDMI inputs and a front mounted USB port for iPod integration pretty much suggests to us that with the HT-S5400 you are getting a $600 receiver with some free speakers thrown in. With seven of them plus a downfiring sub, this looks to be a great deal.

Harman Kardon SB 16 Surround Bar First Look

Harman Kardon rates the SB 16 surround bar solution down to 50Hz which, while not an impressive stat for bass freaks, is probably one of the most honest we've seen. We can't help but respect that. How many surround bar solutions have we seen that rate themselves down to 40 or 30Hz when you could tell, just by the specs, that there wasn't a chance that was true. We got our ears on the Harmon Kardon SB16 and can say that it's as impressive in real like as it is on paper. The SB 16 is very competitive in terms of its price point and design philosophy. The wireless sub is a plus and three inputs a definite bonus. The SB 16 seems to have it all from looks to features. What was more impressive is what they accomplished sonically.

Boston Acoustics TVee Model 30 Soundbar and Wireless Sub First Look

Is the Boston Acoustics TVee Model 30 for you? Well, we acknowledge that surroundbars have their place. When you are looking for something to make your secondary TV sound better, the Model 30 will certainly work for you. We like that they've included more connections with this model and the Bluetooth streaming is a nice addition. Being able to switch between stereo and virtual surround is a nice touch though we imagine we'd want to stick with stereo while our kids would want the virtual surround. The subwoofer has a lot of versatility with placement because it can be oriented vertically or horizontally (which, honestly, so can any sub if you really want to but at least Boston is giving you permission) and wirelessly. Allowing any remote to control the TVee Model 30 will definitely increase usability. The biggest problem we see is the doubling in price from the last model.

Polk Audio Blackstone TL350 5.0 Satellite/Center System First Look

With the new Polk Audio Blackstone TL350 5.0 Satellite/Center System, they've hit at least two of the three things we look for in small speakers. Aesthetically, they are small, glossy, and contemporary. Sonically, despite all the marketing speak, they seem to have the driver and enclosure technology behind them. While we'd prefer a larger, more full featured speaker, if you have to go small, making sure they aren't using 25 cent drivers is a huge plus. The only question mark in the equation is price. At a suggested retail of $750, the Blackstone TL350s may be a bit too rich for some. But with the Polk pedigree and driver history behind them not to mention the size and looks, Polk may be able to convince potential buyers that they are worth it. The only thing to do now is to go out and listen to them to make sure they live up to the hype.

Polk Audio SurroundBar 500CHT First Look

While we've never been huge fans of the surround bar revolution, we have to admit that they have their uses. Polk Audio has put some of their best drivers into their SurroundBar CHT500. At $999, it isn't a cheap solution compared to the competition and requiring the extra purchase of a receiver makes it even less so. Polk suggests pairing it with one of their wireless subs (they only have one with an MSRP of $450 but a retail price of half that) which again adds to the price. If the audio quality is there with the SurroundBar CHT500, it may all be worth it. Especially if the surround really does surround you. You bet.

Polk Audio Wireless Surround F/X Rear Speaker First Look

The Wireless Surround F/X builds on the SurroundBar technology Polk has be using for years but puts it in the back of the room. We are very intrigued with the Polk Audio Wireless Surround F/X rear speaker. With four 2.5" drivers, a 5.25" woofer, small transceiver that connects to a transmitter that is connected to your receiver's surround channels, powered by a multichannel digital amplifier, and a switch to indicate placement (and adjust the DSP) of the speaker - floor, table, or shelf, Polk looks to have a winner on its hands with this one.

Boston Acoustics TVee Model 20 First Look

Boston Acoustics is offering an incremental upgrade to their TVee Model 2 with the TVee Model 20. This new model has upgraded drivers but most importantly sports a lower price. Now that's what we call an upgrade! The system was different from what others were trying to bring to market. At the time (as now) surroundbars were all the rage. Everyone was trying to push out pseudo-surround using multiple drivers bouncing sound around a room or by using digital signal processing (DSP). While these often sounded good to consumers, what didn't was the price. Sticker shock was a huge problem. Sure, you want surround but if you are going to pay all that money, why not get the real thing?

Yamaha YHT-S400 Soundbar HTiB First Look

How compact can Home Theaters in a Box (HTiBs) get? Yamaha is pushing those limits with the new YHT-S400 Soundbar, receiver, and subwoofer solution. Yamaha has combined its thinnest soundbar with a combo receiver/subwoofer. That's right a receiver and subwoofer in one box.

JVC TH-BA3 and TH-BS7 Wireless Soundbar First Look

JVC has announced two soundbar solutions that are not only wireless (which is cool) but also designed to compliment your newly hung, uber flat panel display. The JVC TH-BA3 ($549.95) features a soundbar, wireless rear speakers, and a wireless sub. The TH-BS7 ($599.95) features a smaller soundbar with a wall mountable processor/amp (also super slim and sure to impress) and a wireless sub.

Boston SoundWare XS 5.1 Review

Boston Acoustics is attempting to out-cube the masters of cube with their SoundWare XS system. With limited inputs and outputs, we're betting this package will be a great add-on to a display sale. The WiFi, Netflix and Pandora streaming, USB port, network streaming, iPod support, and auto calibration should make your first time buyer (providing they have the right display) very happy.

Vizio VSB210WS Sound Bar with Wireless Subwoofer Review

A good deal; Americans are crazy for them. Waiting in line three days at an IKEA store for a free chair; bogo sales; no interest for 90 days; no payments till 2075; we can't get enough. "Recession proof" stores are successful because the stores provide a good deal. The Wal-Marts, Targets, Rooms to Go's, etc. prey on the American dream of getting the deal of a lifetime. Good deal or not, if America believes they are getting a deal, the product will be successful.

Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS 5.1 Surround Speaker System

In this economy, everyone is looking for a deal. There are also people that are that looking for big sound out of small speakers. While the first is relatively easy to find, the second is pretty much impossible. Boston Acoustics is taking their stab at it with their new SoundWare XS 5.1 Surround Speaker System. Available in black and white, the speaker system is designed to be shelf, wall or corner mounted. At just about a 4" cube, the system should have little problem blending into the background.

Atlantic Technology 1400 SR-z Height Speakers

Dolby ProLogic IIz is a brand new DSP. It has only recently started showing up on home theater receivers. The Onkyo TX-SR607 has only started hitting store shelves and already Atlantic Technology had a speaker optimized for th PLIIz processing. The 1400 SR-z is a selectable dipole/bipole speaker with a compact size and shallow profile. At just over a foot wide, less than half a foot deep, and 8" tall, they are definitely compact. They are only 7lbs each so hanging them shouldn't be much of a problem.

MCM Custom Audio 50-908 5.0 Speaker System Review

When getting into the home theater game, the biggest stumbling block for early adopters is price. The MCM Custom Audio 50-908 speakers consist of the 50-9085 bookshelf speakers and the 50-9080 center channel. As an entry level speaker, the MCM Custom Audio 50-908's blew me away. While they are obviously limited by their price point, what they do manage to do is overperform. For just over $100 you can have a 5.0 system that will not only introduce you to surround sound but not break the bank at the same time.

The Speaker Company TSAT-1000-HT8-B System Review

This is the finest sounding compact system on the cheap ($399 for 5.1) that I’ve heard with a fit and finish that is second to none. The system works extremely well together mated with the ASW-8 subwoofer. Considering that tSc offers a FREE 30 day trial period with FREE shipping both ways, there is simply no risk in buying it. That being said, if a small compact inexpensive system is what you are looking for, than stop perusing the internet and buy this package!

Aperion Audio Intimus 4B Harmony SD

Aperion Audio's Intimus 4B Harmony SD Speaker System may be a lot to pronounce all in one breath - but it may be worth it, if that means you'll get to put them into your listening room. These speakers are incredibly well-built, and do very well in a near-field environment. They are beautiful to look at and the new Bravus dual 8-inch subwoofer leaves a good impression. For those with larger rooms, look to one of Aperion's bigger systems to give you more dynamics and a better fit.
