  • First Impression: Gotta Have It!

MKSound is back in full force with the relaunch of the brand incorporating legendary loudspeaker and subwoofer designs and new products as well.  I've always been a fan of the brand because of their no nonsense approach to loudspeaker design void of marketing gimmicks.  They have always been on the pinnacle of well engineered driver design and crossover implementation on all of their products which earned them prestige in the recording studio and upscale home theater installations alike.

MK150The MK150 Series for example employs 3 silk dome tweeters with rear chamber and waveguide faceplate positioned in close proximity to reduce lobing errors while also minimizing baffle surface area thus reducing diffraction.  The large air cavity in the rear chamber of the tweeter allows for a very low resonance frequency enabling the designer to employ a much lower crossover point to reduce woofer on-axis beaming and increase system power handling.  The woofers utilize cast aluminum baskets and are vented for increased cooling and power handling.  The multiple woofer and tweeter system allows these compact monitors to play at exceedingly high output levels distortion free.  Coupled with their no nonsense subwoofers, you've got a fullrange system with virtually limitless dynamic capabilities that will not only play loud but handle delicate musical passages with equal precision.

I've sat through many demos in the past 15-20 years featuring MKSound speakers and never walked away disappointed which is something I can't always say for bigger more well known brands in the industry.

Some accolades of the MK150 System include:

  • chosen for the first public demonstrations of the Blu-ray disc format.
  • chosen to create the very first Dolby EX 6.1 channel soundtrack.
  • chosen to create Blu-ray and DVD masters for Sony, MGM, TriStar, Columbia and many others.
  • chosen to record the complete Carl Nielsen symphonies with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
  • chosen for sound design for Star Wars Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.
  • chosen to restore and remaster such film classics as Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz.
  • chosen for sound production on Wall-E, Iron Man, King Kong, The Incredibles, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Finding Nemo, Pirates Of The Caribbean, Chicago, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Black Hawk Down, Pearl Harbor, Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Rings, Cast Away and many other major releases.

MK TowerThis series is available in the format of your choice: passive standmount (S150 MKII THX Ultra2), active stand-mount (MPS2510P), wall-mount (MP150) or in-wall/in-ceiling (IW150).

At CEDIA 20110, we spoke with Aldo Filippelli (Executive Director for MKSound) at CEDIA about the relaunch of the brand and future products to come.  Pictured up at the top of this editorial are new prototype subwoofers which are said to be higher output than their older models.   We plan on doing a full battery of tests on these babies when they become available per our new Subwoofer Measurement Protocol and Bassaholic Room Size Rating.

They also had on display new tower speakers (right pic).

Their website is currently being updated and we look forward to reviewing their new products and watching this great company regain traction in the industry.
