If the JBL Synthesis S4700 speakers sound anywhere near as good, consumers may look at that $20k price tag as a value considering they are getting some measure of the performance of the other two, higher priced, speakers. Releasing more budget (comparatively speaking) speakers makes a lot of sense in the current economy. We expect a lot of interest in these speakers and hope to get a chance to demo them ourselves soon.

Procella Audio P860 Biamplified Full-Range Extremely High-Output Reference Speaker Preview

We may never be able to afford a pair (much less full set) of Procella Audio P860 Biamplified Full-Range Extremely High-Output Reference Speakers. But that's okay. In the world of expensive audio, we often encounter companies that are talking up their heritage and custom finishes rather than what their speakers can do. Not Procella Audio. With extension down to 40Hz, output high enough to fill a mid-sized commercial cinema, and included amps, there isn't a lot to complain about (other than their looks). If you have a HUGE theater and a pile of cash to burn, Procella Audio should be on your short list.

Aperion Audio Intimus 4T Hybrid SD 5.1 Speakers Video Review

I'm 6' 5". So, I'm just not sure I'm the right guy to be photographed with these speakers. You see, this is the Aperion Audio Intimus 4T Speaker System. And while Aperion makes lots of, shall we say, "normal" sized speakers, the 4T system, is really designed for the person looking to get that great Aperion Audio sound, but with a much smaller footprint and a lower price point. You can, for example, get this entire 5.1 system, with the 4T towers, 4B bookshelf speakers, 4C center channel and Bravus IIA 8D subwoofer, for just $1,350. Shipped. That's not bad, and this is the kind of system that sounds much bigger than it is. And really... it better. It's perfect for those looking to place speakers in a way that doesn't take over a room. And, yes, I suppose they'd be great for short people... What?

Revel Performa3 Loudspeakers Preview

It's all fine and good to read about speakers that cost more than your car but it is nice to remind yourself that there are quality speaker offerings well within your budget. Harman's Revel brand is looking to do just that with their new Performa3 line. This new line of speakers has a large range of offerings at different price points for the Audioholic that is looking to step up in performance and looks from their initial, budget system. They really seem to be aiming for the consumer that is ready to get serious about their home theater and, we think, they've hit the nail on the head.

GoldenEar Triton Three Tower Loudspeaker Preview

A little over a year ago the GoldenEar company was launched with the debut of their Triton Two tower speakers. These tall but slim speakers garnered a lot of industry attention and press. The question that was in everyone's mind at the time was "could Sandy Gross (Formerly of Definitive Technology) launch another successful speaker company?" He gambled on yes and so far it appears to be paying off. The new Triton Three Tower speaker system is said to have most of the performance virtues of the Triton Two but in a smaller more affordable package. You still get the internal powered subwoofers and acclaimed driver technology from its bigger sibling.

McIntosh XR Series Loudspeakers Preview

While the specifics of the XR speaker line are lacking, the core of the message is clear: McIntosh is trying to get into more living rooms and home theaters. They had a strong loudspeaker heritage back in the day and it looks like they are trying to reclaim it. While $16,500 might seem like a lot for a 5.0 system, in the world of high end audio, that is less than the price of some power cables. With the McIntosh name behind the XR line, we're expecting these to do well for the company. In the current economic climate, more affordable options are always popular and we think this is a good, strategic move for McIntosh.

Status Acoustics 8T Floorstanding Loudspeaker Preview

Got $50k to splurge on a new sports car? Status Acoustics is hoping you'd spend it on loudspeakers instead. The new speaker is named the Status 8T and it is Status Acoustics most radical design yet, incorporating a two-piece design that places the midrange and treble cabinet floating above the bass cabinet. With the 8T, function follows form. One of the design goals was to minimize cabinet resonances that color sound. With the 8T’s two-cabinet design, the low and mid frequency enclosures are effectively isolated from each other, nearly eliminating cabinet resonance in the speaker system. The three 10" high excursion aluminum cone bass drivers combined with the four 6.5" Beryllium cone mid woofers and 1" Beryllium dome tweeter ensures this speaker system will play true full-range sound effortlessly at any playback level. Standing at nearly 6ft tall and tipping the scale at over 300lbs, we have little reason to doubt its output capabilities. We look forward to taking these beauties for a test drive to see if they truly deliver Ferrari like performance at Corvette pricing.

Lansche Model No. 7 $100k Floorstanding Loudspeakers Preview

Aaudio Imports introduced the new $100,000 per pair Model No. 7 Tower Speakers at CES. These are 3-Way speakers by Lansche Audio, a German company and they feature the Corona Plasma Tweeter - which looks like the focal point of the HAL 9000 of 2001: A Space Oddyssey fame. In addition to the Corona tweeter, the new No. 7 tower speakers feature a new aluminum front baffle, integrated adjustable footers for perfect leveling, and bi-wiring terminals. Aaudio Imports is hoping you'll pick up a pair of its new Arcadia full-range bi-polar loudspeaker by B.M.C. Audio of Germany. These speakers are cranking up at the Venetian and the Arcadia represents the first entry in a brand new product category for the Germany-based electronics manufacturer and the first model in an anticipated series of three new speakers. BMC claims that the Arcadia is hand-made with custom-designed parts rather than off-the-shelf solutions. It features a bi-polar balanced configuration and unconventional ceramic-composite cabinet to custom-made drivers, an external crossover, and an impressive 28 jacks. The connection package includes separate terminals for an amplifier, the woofers and midrange drivers, the Air-Motion tweeters, and the crossover box.

Emotiva X-Ref Speakers Preview

Big black boxes. That was your first reaction. It was ours as well. But we've learned through long experience that there is often more to Emotiva products than looks. The new X-Ref speakers look to be no different. Do you want real wood finishes and magnetic grilles? There are plenty of those out there. But if you want maximum performance paired with quality driver units, crossovers and enclosures at a bare-bones price tag, Emotiva is often your best bet. While we'll have to reserve our final judgement for our review, at first blush the X-Ref speakers look very, very good. So when they announced a new Gold GX line of speakers at CEDIA this year, we couldn't help but show up. The new line sports a number of improvements all based on the drivers in the Platinum line. First, they have the new C-CAM wideband GX ribbon tweeter which will reproduced sounds up to 60kHz. The woofers utilize Monitor Audio's RST (Rigid Surface Technology) cones with oversized voice-coils and powerful magnet structures. Uniquely, each of the drivers are mounted on a single tensioned through-bolt which is secured to the back of the cabinet. This bolt acts not only as a rigid cabinet brace, but it also effectively decouples the driver and the front baffle.

Paradigm Monitor 7 Loudspeaker Series Preview

Paradigm proudly announces their new Monitor Series 7 loudspeakers which are said to be a complete redesign of their classic Monitor lineup while still preserving the acoustical signature of its predecessors. The new Monitor 7 series is said to go further in terms of aesthetics, technology and design than almost any speaker series update in Paradigm's history. We got a chance to briefly get up close with these new speakers at CEDIA today. Paradigm was very straightforward about their design goals with these speakers to produce a compact, high value, high performance series of loudspeakers. Overall we were quite impressed with the build quality and design and look forward to conducting a formal review.

Klipsch Synergy F-30 Speaker System Review

We review speakers from a variety of manufacturers, however Klipsch is one of the top-selling brands in America. The reason for that is they make products which play loud and have plenty of bass. They also have an incredibly good presence in both the custom installation and brick and mortar channels. Klipsch is everywhere. Of course, so is Bose, so it begs the question: Is a new Klipsch Synergy Series F-30 Home Theater Speaker System really something to get excited about, or not? We've played around with Klipsch in the past, even including the speakers in our most recent tower speaker shootout, and honestly they did really well. This time around we were looking at the new F-30 Floorstanding speakers, along with a full complement of surrounds, a center and a new S-110 10-inch subwoofer. That's a pretty nice matched system - and for around $2360, it's at a great price point for those looking to get into some serious 5.1 surround sound.

Boston Acoustics Classic Series II Speakers Preview

The Classic Series II release from Boston Acoustics seems to be, on the face, more of a rename than an actual update. It is unclear, other than the CS260 II which lost a woofer, what substantive changes Boston has made. It is a reminder, however, that there are affordable options out there for the neophyte. With the new CS II Series speakers, you can have a 5.0 system for as low as $580 or 5.1 with floorstanding speakers and larger bookshelf speakers as the rears for $1200. That's a nice range for an entry level speaker line letting the consumer choose what they are comfortable paying with a good variety of speaker sizes.

Genesis 7.2f Floorstanding Loudspeakers Preview

The new Genesis 7.2f floorstanding loudspeakers sport both front and rear mounted 1" Ring-Ribbon Tweeters for a dipole design, an integrated servo-sub, and titanium cone midrange drivers. This system easily reveals any faults in the signal chain feeding it. If you’re keen on unleashing the SX-6300/Rs in all their sonic glory than the best upstream electronics your budget allows is definitely called for. It was surprising to hear the sonic differences that were apparent when trying the system with different power amps during recreational listening sessions. This was an easy loudspeaker system to get correctly positioned within the listening space for achieving great sound. There’s not much about the RBH Sound SX-6300/R loudspeaker system not to like, though we hope more finish options other than matte black oak will be offered in the future. Their small footprint and phenomenal sound will likely score points with those audiophiles not having a whole lot of free floor space available. All in all RBH have done a fine job in creating what will no doubt be yet another successful product line. They claim it's the most affordable hand-built electrostatic speaker with real wood finishes and custom bi-wire capable binding posts. The sign of a good speaker is to sonically disappear into the room. Martin Logan takes this notion up a notch implying it will also visually disappear. If true, this type of cloaking technology would be the envy of even a Romulan. This proprietary audiophile quality network is hand-built using precision point-to-point wiring, polypropylene capacitors, massive air-core coils, and a custom wound toroidal audio transformer. With the new Verus Forte line you are looking at a 5.0 system at just under $1700 (as opposed to the $3k+ of the Verus Grand). That's a hefty savings for much of the same technology. You'll still need to spring for a sub but you already knew that, right? The diminutive size of the Bookshelves means you'll have no problem placing them. In fact, the entire line is very decor friendly from the furniture-grade finishes to the small footprints and sexy curves. If you can afford the Verus Grand speakers, we have no problem recommending them (if you read the review you should know that). I have to say, unequivocally, they've succeeded. The Verus Grand Towers image as good if not better than any speaker I've ever experienced. The Verus Grand Center is a joy to experience and makes a huge difference with listening to multichannel content. Our in-room and manufacturers measurements of the speakers are remarkably similar showing that not only has Aperion created a speaker that can measure well in a lab, but can do so in a real world environment. With Aperion's free shipping (both ways) and 30 day in home audition, they are a risk free purchase. And that's with top of the line everything. You can start off with the A Series for $900 for a full 5.1 system. We're very curious to see how the A 360 towers (and their smaller brethren the A 250 towers) sound. At $800/$600 a pair, that's bargain basement pricing for tower speakers. For many hardcore Audioholics, that's an impulse buy. For those on a budget, providing the sound quality is there, it's a God-send. This is a chance to get into real speakers at a real affordable price. We look forward to seeing with the Boston Acoustics A Series speakers can do.

Polk Audio LSiM 707 Flagship Floorstanding Speakers First Look

You put two words together in the same sentence and you are guaranteed to get every Audioholic's attention. Those words - Flagship and Speaker. For almost ten years Polk Audio has had the LSi line as their flagship speakers. This year, at CES, they are introducing a new flagship, the LSiM, headed up by their 707 towers. While pricing hasn't yet been announced, they sport a proprietary 3.25" Extended Liner Motion (ELM) midrange mounted above a 1" Advance Isotropic ring radiator tweeter plus a 6.5" ELM midrange and two 6x9" ELM "subwoofers" (or what you and I would call "woofers"). They are a four way ported design that has 40 years of audio technology behind them. Plus, they are so much better looking than the old LSi speakers we don't know where to begin. Talk about hot. Now, if only we could get them on our test bench.

PSB Imagine T Floorstanding Loudspeaker Review

The PSB Imagine Ts floorstanding loudspeaker system is an outstanding product that gives excellent value & performance for the dollar. The Ts are a 3-driver, dual ported, 2.5-way system featuring a pair of 5 ¼” woofers and a single, 1” ferrofluid-damped titanium dome tweeter. They have refreshingly attractive aesthetics and a small footprint for those tight on space. Sonically, they offer neutral, clean, low-distortion sound, thriving on dynamic source material. All of this adds up to top-notch performance commensurate at this price class. Toss in the fact that the PSB Imagine Ts come from a company that sports a well-earned reputation for top value for dollar and you have a winner on your hands! Highly recommended.

They produce a huge soundstage and can play exceedingly loud down to a modest 50 Hz, with little to no audible compression. In my opinion, these speakers look as good as they sound which is something I rarely find myself saying at this price point for a tower speaker system. The EMP E55Ti's come with a 5 year warranty and a 30 day money back return policy with free shipping both ways. This makes for a risk free trial for you to demo these speakers in the most critical and important listening room - your own home theater. Highly recommended!

Aperion Audio Verus Grand Tower Loudspeaker First Look

If we had to make a checklist of sub-$2k floorstanding speaker "must-haves," the Aperion Verus Grand Towers would score well. Furniture grade finish? Check. Gloss black or cherry real wood veneer? Check. Overbuilt cabinets, sub 50Hz frequency response, and compatibility with many receivers? Check, check, and check. The key advancement to the Verus Grand line in the tweeter. Sporting what Aperion calls an Axially Stabilized Radiator design, this 1" silk dome tweeter is designed not only to handle the top end, but also the upper-mid frequencies. Aperion is still supporting their Risk-Free 30-Day In-Home Audition with this new line. With free shipping both ways (even if you don't like them), it takes a lot of a stress of ordering online away.

Boston Acoustics Reflection Series RS 326 Floorstanding Loudspeakers First Look

The new flagship of the Reflection Series is the RS 326 floorstanding loudspeakers. These 47 pound speakers come in a scratch-resistant gloss black finish with thin profile magnetic grills. Sporting a 1" Extended Wide Bandwidth tweeter, a single 3.5" midrange, and two 6.5" woofers all constructed out of a Fiber Ceramic Copolymer Material with aluminum phase plugs, these drivers are all proprietary to Boston and are designed with linearity in mind to maintain the purest audio as possible. With dealers all over, if you're looking to spend ~$2,000 a pair, you'd be remiss not to at least give the RS 326s a listen.

PSB Speakers Imagine T Tower Speaker First Look

The PSB Speakers Imagine T tower floorstanding speakers look to be quite a lot of speaker for the $2000 a pair asking price. We recently conducted a single-blind $1500-$2000 Floorstanding Speaker Shootout and really wish we could have had the Imagine T speakers represented. From an aesthetic standpoint, they are quite something to behold. We like all the thought that went into the design (especially the included outriggers). The PSB Imagine T's are rated from 42Hz to 20kHz on axis with 1.5dB of variance and as low as 38Hz at -3dB. At 30 degrees off axis you'll see a 10Hz drop off on the top end from the 1.5dB variance on-axis response but everything else is the same. This is a remarkable figure (especially considering the price) provided it can be realized in room.

GoldenEar Technology Triton Two Floorstanding Speaker First Look

If you're going to have a name like GoldenEar Technology, you'd better have something other than silver wiring and pretty aesthetics to back it up. Sandy Gross, co-founder of Polk Audio and Definitive Technology, and Don Givogue, another Definitive co-founder have the sort of pedigree that lends instant respect to a new audio company. The top of the line Triton Two has dual 4.5-inch upper bass/midrange drivers with multi-vaned phase plugs in a D’Appolito configuration around a High-Velocity Folded Ribbon (HVFR) tweeter. The HVFR tweeter is composed of a high temperature film which is folded like an accordion. According to GoldenEar Technology, this combination takes up no more room on the speaker face than a 1" dome tweeter but has a wider dispersion than ribbon tweeters. Pair that with integrated 1200watt subs and you've got a speaker that dips down to 16Hz for $1249 each! We had a chance to demo them at CEDIA and we were very impressed!

Martin Logan ElectroMotion XStat Electrostatic Loudspeaker First Look

MartinLogan introduced their all new ElectroMotion Loudspeaker Series at CEDIA featuring their thin film transducer technologies—electrostatic and compact Folded Motion. This new series is said to establish a new benchmark for price verses performance. We had a chance to demo this speaker system first hand powered by McIntosh amplifiers. We listened to various music clips which revealed the Martin Logans did a great job of delivering every nuance in the recording even with the rather high noise floor from the trade show. Priced at $1,995 per pair (US), the ElectroMotion ESL is scheduled to ship in March 2011

RBH Sound SX Series (SX-T2/SX-8300/SX-6300) Loudspeakers First Look

RBH Sound has unveiled their new SX series of loudspeakers which are set to replace their standard black finish Signature and Signature Reference series products. Three Floorstanding models SX-T2, SX-8300 and SX-6300 are available in standard drivers and upgraded Status Acoustics drivers found in their Signature Reference series. We are happy to see that RBH Sound has updated the look of such fantastic performance loudspeakers. Considering this stunning new look we suspect that RBH Sound will do incredibly well with the new SX series lineup. We are looking forward to diving into some formal reviews of these speakers that are sure to finally look as good as they sound.

Energy Connoisseur CF-50 Floorstanding Loudspeaker System First Look

Canadian based loudspeaker company Energy is making a comeback with a completely revamped model line starting with their new Connoisseur series. The CF-50 is a 4 driver 2 1/2 way floorstanding speaker system sporting dual 5 1/2" midbass phase plug drivers with ribbed elliptical surrounds, one 5 1/2" phase plug midrange, and a 1" aluminum tweeter. In speaking with the Energy rep at CEDIA, they informed us that the Connoisseur line is based on their flagship Veritas line which has recently be refreshed and re-released to the market.

Klipsch RF-7 II Floorstanding Speaker First Look

At $3200 a pair, the Klipsch RF-7 II floorstanding speakers might not be that expensive in the grand scheme of things but they are pricey. In this price range, you expect considerable performance. Technology-wise, the RF-7 II speakers look fairly impressive. We're sure that three of the Klipsch mantras of "high efficiency with low distortion" with "controlled directivity" and "wide dynamic range" will be realized. We'll have to wait on our measurements to see if "flat frequency response" is also achieved. Klipsch lovers are probably already lining up for the RF-7 IIs. They are a bit boxy looking and horn-loaded tweeters usually invoke a love/hate response. With the legions of Klipsch fans out there already, we're sure these will find a market. We're just not sure how they'll stack up against other speakers in the price range.
