Executive Overview

RBH Sound used the CES Expo to unveil two new additions to their award-winning Signature Series speaker lineup. The 8300-SE and the reference version, the 8300-SE/R, both employ RBH’s proprietary aluminum cone technology. Each model features three 8-inch aluminum cone subwoofers, two 6.5-inch aluminum cone woofers and a 1-inch soft dome tweeter. The reference version, the 8300-SE/R, features upgraded 6.5-inch fixed phase plug aluminum cone woofers, a liquid-cooled Scanspeak silk dome tweeter, and a modified crossover network to manage the upgraded drivers. The reference-level upgrades provide increased power handling and improved resolution.

The 8300-SE and 8300-SE/R is 55-3/8” high, 10-7/8” wide (13-1/2” with feet), and 17” deep. The cabinet is constructed of.75-inch MDF and is internally-braced to eliminate standing waves and cabinet resonance. An acoustic suspension design, the 8300-SE and SE/R features a highly efficient, dimpled front-firing flared port which works in conjunction with the three 8-inch woofers to allow the frequency response to extend down to a bone-rattling 22Hz! True to the RBH Sound Signature Series tradition, the cabinets are custom-finished in one of RBH Sound’s 30 uniquely different custom woodgrain veneers. To appease audio purists, the 8300-SE and SE/R features two pair of high quality five-way binding posts, allowing for bi-wiring and/or bi-amplification.

The 8300-SE and SE/R can handle up to 400 Watts, have a frequency response of 22Hz-20kHz, and weigh 115 pounds each. The 8300-SE has an initial suggested retail price of $7,999 per pair, and the 8300-SE/R has an initial suggested retail price of $8,449 per pair. Both are expected to begin shipping in April. At the show, Paul Apollonio took a quick listen to them and was impressed by the tight, solid, and well defined bass. The midrange was smooth and free of resonances. Imaging was good and female voices were clear and detailed. Look forward to a full review soon.

I met the RBH folks at CES. They are nice in person (which counts a lot compared to some of the people there), and knowledgeable as well. I think they are one of the speaker companies that can weather the economic downturn compared to others I saw. I did get to see these speakers in question, and they look darn impressive. Can't wait to see how they sound!
