A little over a year ago the GoldenEar company was launched with the debut of their Triton Two tower speakers.  These tall but slim speakers garnered a lot of industry attention and press.  The question that was in everyone's mind at the time was "could Sandy Gross (Formerly of Definitive Technology) launch another successful speaker company?"  He gambled on yes and so far it appears to be paying off.

GoldenEar just launched their new Triton Three which is literally a smaller version of the Triton Two for audiophiles looking for a more compact solution for high quality two-channel and multi-channel playback. GoldenEar recommends pairing them with their matching SuperSat 3s and SuperSat 50C to achieve a perfectly blended surround sound solution.

The Triton Three’s sleek, elegantly curved and tapered design mirrors the award winning styling of the Triton Two with piano-gloss black and designer-fabric-covered surfaces. Like the Triton Two, the Triton Three incorporates the built-in powered subwoofer technology first pioneered by GoldenEar principals Sandy Gross and Don Givogue.  In this case, there is an integral 800-watt digital/DSP controlled power amp driving an active front-mounted long-throw 5”x 9” quadratic subwoofer driver. This is coupled to two opposing, internally balanced 6.75”x 8” quadratic planar infrasonic passive radiators which are located on the sides, near the floor, in order to take full advantage of boundary coupling.  There is one of the same 4.5” high-definition cast basket MVPP™ drivers as used in the Triton Two, along with the same GoldenEar signature High Velocity Folded Ribbon (HVFR™) tweeter.

Performance-wise, the Triton Three is said to deliver the same boxless three-dimensional imaging as the Two, which reviewers have hailed as “mystical”, “magical” – and, best summed up by the dramatic, “had us believing that the entire surface of the front wall was covered with speakers.” Likewise, the subwoofer bass was designed to blend perfectly with the midrange and high frequencies.

We've heard demos of GoldenEar loudspeakers at the last two trade shows and walked away with a pleasant experience.  The speakers literally do provide a very wide soundstage and they managed to deliver full sound in a noisy, non-ideal trade show environment.

The Triton Three looks like it continues the same virtues of the Triton Two and we look forward to checking them out in our own sound labs in the near future.

At $999/ea, Herman Cain should be a fan of the price which doesn’t seem too bad when you consider each speaker has its own built in powered subwoofer.

Availability: Winter 2012. Dimensions: 5.25" W (front), 7”W (back) x 13”D x 44” H (base is 11.5” W x 15.25” D). Recommended Amplification is 20-400 watts/channel. Efficiency is 90 dB.
