Orange Box Screenshots, and Conclusion

by Clint DeBoer last modified October 22, 2007

It's easy to talk about a game, but very different to express in words the graphics and feel of the action. Here are a few screen shots from the five titles that will hopefully give you a brief taste of what's included.

HL2-Menu.jpg HL2-Game.jpg
Half Life 2 – Main Menu and Train Station. Yes, that guy is about to beat me with a big stick!

E1-Menu.jpg E1-Game.jpg
Episode 1 – Main Menu and Early in the Game. That robot is your friend. It isn’t killing Alyx!

E2-Menu.jpg E2-Game.jpg
Episode 2 – Main Menu and Early in the Game. This is a really cool environment and the sky is amazing!

Portal-Menu.jpg Portal-Game.jpg
Portal – Main Menu and Level 01. The recursive portal effect on the right is an awesome head trip!

TF2-Menu.jpg TF2-Game.jpg
Team Fortress 2 – Main Menu and a courtyard. You can see how the graphics are cartoony and smooth.

Conclusion

If you are the kind of person who like single player games, taking a lot of time to explore, and being in the action then the Orange Box is for you. If you are searching for some multiplayer killing then I'd have say you should pass and pick back up your copy of Halo 3 or wait a bit longer for Call of Duty 4. Oh, and I wanted to mention that there are only a mere handful of Xbox Live achievements for the Orange Box... 99, to be exact! Woah! Yeah, they are pretty well divided between the 5 titles and will be awesome for those of you who like lots of little challenges. Again, the graphics are decent for the home theater experience, but not revolutionary by any means. The sound has its good and bad points as well, but is certainly much more enjoyable on a full theater type setup then on the PC. The controls are a bit more tricky then your PC, but I prefer sitting down in my easy chair for the epic Half Life 2 experience. Is this an Epic? Trilogy? Or does the original Half Life and its versions make it something more like Star Wars?

The little green Orange Box; nothing green, nothing orange, but a whole-lotta good single player gaming action! Good luck, Gordon Freeman!

Ratings

Visuals - 4/5
The graphics look pretty good, but are still the same as the 3 year old PC game.

Sound - 3.5/5
The Musical Score is good, but the sound effects don’t take advantage of the LFE.

Gameplay - 4/5
Many hours of single player gaming is coming your way! Don’t expect any local game parties out of TF2.

Value - 5/5
So many games in one box! This is a great value! Oh, and Portal is the Shizzle Dizzle!
