A Bad Think’s 2019 album The Savior was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Immersive Audio Album, thanks in part to a great 5.1 mix. For this new album 'Lifelike', Marquart embraced Dolby Atmos and pulled out all the stops. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios, the new film features brilliantly restored footage and never-before-released recordings of the Beatles during the 1969 creation of the album Let It Be. The documentary also challenges the popular notion that conflict among the group’s members had the band on the verge of collapse during this pivotal moment in their history. It also doesn't hurt that the high profile of both guitarists results in a multitude of outstanding sideman, from drummers to bass players to keyboardists. They are purveyors of soulful, powerful, and deeply-moving music, with a long-standing reputation of impressive live shows and an imposing, faithful and loyal global fanbase. From January through September 2018, a carefully curated and strictly limited (5000 copies each) and numbered series of Marillion live albums will be released in retail stores across the globe for the very first time.

Spyro Gyra: Morning Dance (1979) LP Review

Morning Dance was the breakout recording for Spyro Gyra, and my favorite release (followed closely by Catching The Sun) of the 1970's. Spyro Gyra (and co-founder/composer Jay Beckenstein), will forever be associated with the title track from this album. This wildly successful follow-up to their debut album (simply titled Spyro Gyra) was eventually certified RIAA Platinum (meaning it sold over 1 million copies). While Spyro Gyra debuted in the shadow of super-groups like Weather Report and Return To Forever, they were just as successful commercially, ultimately out-lasting them all!

Spyro Gyra: Breakout (1986) LP Review

Breakout is my favorite Spyro Gyra release (followed closely by Freetime) of the 1980's. It didn't hurt that Love and Other Obsessions rose above a string of very pedestrian releases leading up to it. While the song selections are hit or miss (there are several tracks I either love or hate), the highs far outweigh the lows. Since they are probably one of my all-time favorite modern jazz/fusion groups, I've decided to do FOUR Spyro Gyra CD reviews over the next several months: one for each complete decade they've been in existence. In reality, the last couple of reviews in the series will be LP reviews, because I didn't start buying CD's until the late 1980's! I'll start with the 2000's and work my way backward to the 1970's, beginning with 2004's The Deep End.

Steve Wilson - Hand Cannot Erase & Multi-Channel Mixing Interview

It was with great pleasure that we had the distinct opportunity to interview prog-rock legend Mr. Steve Wilson (former front man of Porcupine Tree). I always seem to come back to certain albums, songs, or even passages, and I’m constantly adding new favorites that demonstrate a system’s ability to reproduce sound accurately. This article recounts some of the most noted demo material on CD, SACD and LP formats that I still use to this day. The CD version of the album includes four additional tracks recorded during the same session, although they are quite different stylistically. For those unfamiliar with Chick Corea, he has a rich composition history, but I believe no one set is more profound than Three Quartets. Almost 20 years later, a digital (DAT) backup copy was found, leading to this release of the second set reviewed here. If you've never heard of keyboardist/composer/producer Don Grolnick, be assured that you have certainly heard his work. Crescendo records is making a living out of “giving the fans what they want”: re-issues of previously released movie soundtracks. Part of the benefit is modern (digital) remastering, but a big part of their effort is recovering/re-sequencing original material not previously available to the public. Indeed, this re-release of Start Trek: First Contact contains over 30 minutes of additional music not on the original 1996 release.

Miles Davis: Kind of Blue CD Review (1997 Reissue)

Miles Davis' Kind of Blue (1959) was such a ground-breaking recording that books have been written about it. The original LP sold millions (no small feat for a jazz recording), simultaneously launching a musical genre (cool jazz) and elevating Miles Davis to legendary status—all from two recording sessions over two days in March and April of 1959. Nearly every track is considered a jazz classic that may be heard in any number of live jazz venues on any given night; their simplicity belies their genius. One of the things that makes this particular release so special is the studio “A-list” rhythm section assembled by producers Washington and MacDonald. With multiple Grammy wins and over 1 million in sales (Platinum level)--Winelight was both a commercial and critical success; both the album and the single Just The Two Of Us charted on Billboard's Top 10. Grover fans will want the Winelight CD in their collection as it pairs nicely with a good bottle of red.

Anyone who knows me knows I’m not a big rock-and-roll fan, and only someone as good as Mike Stern can steer me towards the type of hard-driving music on this CD. I call it “rock-and-roll jazz” and it is smokin’ hot! A tour-DE-force of recording acumen, this CD features six different lead engineers who recorded in four different studios in three different cities (NYC, LA and Austin). Check it out!

Progressive Rock Band Renaissance - Annie Haslam Interview

The British Progressive Band known as Renaissance was founded in 1969 by Keith Relf and Jim McCarty after the split up of their band, the Yardbirds. Renaissance was set slightly apart from other Progressive bands throughout the 70s, such as Genesis, Yes and ELP, as they emphasized more on symphonic classical music blended into their progressive themes without relying on hard hitting synthesizer or screaming guitars. But make no mistake; they were equally as popular amongst the same fans. In 2009, they got back together for their 40th year anniversary tour. We had a chance to sit down with vocalist Annie Haslam at her studio in Pennsylvania.

Tron Legacy (2010) CD Review

The Tron Legacy CD Soundtrack is not only one of the few movie soundtracks I own, but it's one of the few imports (of any media type) I own. While this European import is technically out-of-print, you can still pick it up on sites like eBay. Why did I purchase the import? Because it contains an additional CD with five additional tracks not available in the U.S. and it also comes with some very nice liner notes. This soundtrack is a sonic masterpiece. In fact, this disc contains some of the best orchestral percussion I've heard in a long time (think 1812 Overture). You can see why the (Blu-Ray) movie really “brings the boom” since many of the musical cues are duplicated note for note on the soundtrack.

Yellowjackets: Timeline (2011) CD Review

It's hard to believe the quantity of high quality original music the Yellowjackets have turned out over the past 30 years. Timeline has CD quickly become one of my all-time favorite Yellowjackets releases, and I bet I listen to it an average of once a week. I believe that drummers are the heart and soul of a group, and I think the essence of the Yellowjackets can be found in the grooves of William Kennedy over the last 20 years or so. Unfortunately, this may be the last release to feature both Kennedy and Haslip, as Jimmy Haslip has now officially been replaced in the bass chair by Jaco Pastorius' son, Felix. Only time will tell if this mix yields similar results, but I'm sure many long-time Jaco fans are dreaming of the possibilities. Great music, great sound quality, get this CD!

Joe Sample: Ashes to Ashes (1990) CD Review

To fans of the Crusaders (or Jazz Crusaders) back in the 1970’s and 1980’s, Joe Sample needs no introduction. His writing and keyboard work was the heart and soul of the group; without Joe Sample, there would have been no Crusaders. So, it should come as no surprise that Joe Sample has enjoyed the most successful solo career of all the original band members. While he has had several good releases following Ashes to Ashes, I personally view this CD as his last “great” release, on par with some of his hugely successful late 1970’s solo releases (like Rainbow Seeker). This is one of those CD’s on my “sit back and relax” list, and that’s a pretty short list for me.

Chris Standring: Blue Bolero (2010) CD Review

I've been a fan of Chris Standring for quite some time; he was a frequent collaborator with my good friend (keyboardist Rodney Lee) throughout the 1990's in a group called "Solar System" before launching a solo career at the turn of the millennium. This CD is still in heavy rotation for weekend breakfasts at my house (along with a couple other of Chris' CDs). This is one of the few CD's I probably listen to more on my home stereo than on my iPod/iPhone. Years of studio experience has made Chris Standring an outstanding record producer in his own right, and this recording places those skills front and center. Check it out.

Greg Lake (Lead Singer of ELP) Interview

One of the most legendary voices of Progressive Music and a master at writing and singing emotional ballads, Greg Lake is continuing his “Songs of a Lifetime” tour in 2013 and is about to release a book about his life in music. One cannot deny his influence during the 70s with bands that included King Crimson and Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Yet, four decades later, ELP, King Crimson and other amazing 70s Prog-Music Bands continue to be shunned by The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We asked Mr. Lake how he felt about this during our exclusive Audioholics one-on-one interview with the father of Progressive Music. Read our interview and find out what's new with Father Christmas.

Jon Anderson (Lead Singer of Yes) Interview

With a singing career that started in 1962 with brother Tony, in a band called the Warriors, to 35 years of playing with one of the most influential bands in Progressive Music, Yes; Jon Anderson has inspired us for five decades. He has authored so many songs in his career that it’d be a daunting task to count. Especially when considering his many collaborations with artists such as Vangelis, King Crimson, Mike Oldfield, Gowan, the Contemporary Youth Orchestra of Cleveland, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Glass Hammer, Toto, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (to name some), his movie songs found in Metropolis, St. Elmo’s Fire, Scream for Help, Legend, Biggles: Adventures in Time and numerous solo albums. His music is inspirational, motivational and dynamic and his alto-tenor voice combined with his native Lancastrian accent make him perhaps the most unique and recognizable vocalist of modern music. Audioholics had the great privilege of interviewing Mr. Anderson to discuss more than just his music, but also his artwork, equipment of choice and musical influences. Also get a glimpse of Anderson's future works including a Yes reunion and new album with Tevor Rabin?

Donald Fagen: Sunken Condos (2012) CD Review

After a year’s worth of rumors, Donald Fagen has finally released his fourth solo CD. A follow-up to his self-proclaimed “trilogy” (The Nightfly, Kamakiriad, and Morph The Cat), Sunken Condos is a worthy addition to the library. Unfortunately there’s good news AND bad news. The fact that Warner effectively “snuck out” this release says more about the current state of the recording industry than the capability or popularity of the artist. While the writing and performance is strong in this album, audio quality doesn't quite live up to prior Donald Fagen or Steely Dan albums. Still a must have CD for all fans.

Glass Hammer Band Member Interview Part II

In Part I of this two part series, we introduced you to the Progressive Rock group Glass Hammer. Part II sits us down with one on one interviews with each member of the band. We discuss their musical influences, where and how they learned to master their instruments and what equipment they like to use. We also ask lead singer Jon Davison about his experiences taking over as lead singer of Yes. He discusses how Jon Anderson has been such a huge influence on his musical career which makes it such a natural progression to succeed him as lead singer. Check out this in depth interview on Glass Hammer and most importantly, give them a serious listen if your looking for music with substance and skill not commonly found in mainstream rock music today.
