We had a great time and really enjoyed the incredible audio and video demos provided by manufacturers. Of course, there was also great food, tons of giveaways and excessive amounts of dancing - including a custom party event complete with Zorro and his wife.

Audio Precision Amplifier Testing Methods Class

At this year's 2008 Audioholics Expo we invited Jonathan Novick, Director of Sales for Audio Precision to talk about the measurements behind more meaningful multi-channel amplifier standards. For those of you unfamiliar with Audio Precision, they are the world’s leading manufacturer of high end audio test equipment. Every serious audio engineer and a select few A/V magazine uses their equipment for evaluating amplifier performance and taking low level and high level measurements.

Marantz New Products Interview Demos Separates & Blu-ray

Marantz made their presence known in a big way at the 2008 Audioholics Expo with their new separates and flagship DLP video projector. The AV8003 and MM8003 are the first of the newly redesigned line of AV receivers and processors which borrow some of the cosmetic stylings from their Reference line. Dubbed the M1 chassis, the new design is also designed to better dissipate heat and reduce vibrations. Audyssey auto-calibration is include and so it XM and HD Radio. Balanced outputs are available on the AV8003 and a digital media player is included to allow consumers to stream content from a PC, Escient or NAS drive to the home theater. The system not only does audio, but also plays video from networked storage.

Audyssey Dynamic Volume Interview

We interviewed Chris Kyriakakis at the 2008 Audioholics Expo about the new Audyssey Dynamic Volume which is appearing in Denon and Onkyo receivers this year (and some others as well). The new technology allows consumers to listen to their multichannel audio and movies at levels far below reference levels without missing out on important surround sound information, or getting blown away by peak sound effects. The technology works by adjusting dynamics with multi-channel sources in mind - and in a way that preserves the intended mix. It also takes care of the excessive volume associated with hyper-compressed television commercials and varying source levels. Once Audyssey is set, it takes care of the rest, no matter what volume level you are listening at.

Dolby TrueHD Dolby Volume Interview at 2008 Audioholics Expo

Craig Eggers, Senior Manager of Dolby Labs, speaks with us at the 2008 Audioholics Expo event in Orlando, Florida and discusses Dolby TrueHD as well as the new Dolby Volume which promises to revolutionize the way consumers listen to home theater and multi-channel music in their living rooms. In particular, Dolby Volume allows better sound reproduction of multi-channel movie and music content without losing surround channel information and eliminating the "pumping and breathing" artifacts so commonly found in typical 'loudness' controls.

Imaging Science Foundation Overview

Joel Silver of the Imaging Science Foundation (ISF) spoke at the 2007 Audioholics State of the C.E. Union event and goes over the basics of television and HDTV, resolution vs perceived video quality, properly calibrating televisions and the effects of proper calibration as it relates to the business models of professional installers. This course is an excellent introduction to ISF training and represented pretty much what you'd find in the opening session of the Level 1 ISF class.

Home Theater Wiring - Why It Matters

Joe Cornwall of Impact Acoustics and Cables to Go discusses why cables do indeed matter when considering your wiring needs for a whole house audio installation or home theater. When generating a cable list for your home theater it's important to consider not only what your devices are, but length, signal type and intended use - both now and future. Failure to consider all options can result in a misconfiguration and lots of work down the road.

Building Better Bass Traps by Ready Acoustics

Scott R. These are essentially a two-piece, modular version of the T-30LSE which allows for a more manageable cabinet size for the low and high drivers. The dual 10-inch subwoofers can now be purchased separately as well (1010-SE/R) and the entire system is much easier to physically ship and manipulate into a home theater or two-channel listening installation. The RBH Sound demo was configured into an 11.2 surround configuration to match with Yamaha's desired DSP settings.

2007 State of the CE Union Epson Interview

Kevin Miller, independent consultant for Epson America and President of ISFTV, sat with us and discussed the newest 1080p projector from Epson. Epson was showing of its brand new PowerLite Pro Cinema 1080 UB ("Ultra Black") projector at the 9th annual Audioholics State of the CE Union Show and we were quite impressed by the picture quality of this unit. While Epson projectors were in every room at the event, they featured their top of the line in the RBH Sound/Yamaha demo room, which was just on the other side of the wall where we conducted this interview.

2007 State of the CE Union Overview Video

Our videographer and editor, Eric Shelton put together a nice music video that provides an overview of the Audioholics 2007 State of the CE Union show and gives you a taste of what to expect for next year when we host it at Disney. The event was a tremendous success and we were pleased with the turnout and how well the educational seminars and demo rooms went. It was truly a small trade show and displays signs of growing significantly as we continue to bring our readers the latest products from some of the most respected manufacturers in the industry.

2007 State of the CE Union Impact Acoustics Interview

We interview Joe Cornwall, Business Developer of Impact Acoustics, to discuss some of the new RapidRun Digital products. They have proven their ability to do a tremendous amount of research into electronics and loudspeaker design to begin with - a new line of speakers was a logical progression. The new LCR speakers ($299 ea.) are built such that the dispersion and polar response are designed identically in either vertical or horizontal positions. This means that the front and center channel speakers are identical and have the same tonality which blends perfectly across the soundstage. Their new subwoofer system sports 2 12" sealed high excursion subwoofers and an 800 watt external amp with room correction for an amazingly low price of $999 for the whole system. Emotiva is gonna cause quite a stir on the net once these products are released.

2007 State of the CE Union Dolby Labs and AIX Records Interview

Clint DeBoer interviews Craig Eggers of Dolby Laboratories and Mark Waldrep of AIX Records at the 2007 Audioholics State of the CE Union Show in Clearwater Beach, Florida. Topics included the first ever showing of Dolby Labs new proposed 7.1 format with 'height' channels. AIX Records provided custom mixes to demo this new format and we talk about various surround formats and their impact on the listening experience. Discrete 7.1 is a new format that has really been made more relevant by the new HD-DVD formats and Dolby is excited about using that to its fullest.

2007 State of the CE Union Axiom Audio Interview

Gene DellaSala interviews Ian Colquhoun and Tom Cumberland on the new A1400-8 amplifier and the new EP400 subwoofer. Axiom Audio loaded up their demo room with 4 EP400s as well as 4 EP600s in order to show that additional subwoofers can even out bass response - and that a smaller subwoofer can and will sound the same as a large subwoofer in a smaller room. We can attest to this fact as the EP400s and EP600s were switched back and forth and there was not much difference between the two in the demo room.

Best of CEDIA 2007 Video

The Audioholics crew reports on the Best of CEDIA 2007 as they meander the show floor with hosts Dina Clarke (of AVRant.com) and Tom Andry (Associate Editor of Audioholics.com).
