This year (as usual) they didn’t disappoint with the introduction of a new flagship subwoofer - the EP800, to take the crown from the EP600, T2 in-wall speakers and a Mini 5.1 compact speaker system. Spend a few days with the fine folks at Axiom and not only will you want to integrate their products into your home theater system, but you’ll want to take a piece of their pride of workmanship and comradeship home with you. Great products and services from a cool company that although maybe isolated up in the hills in Dwight, Ontario, aren’t out of touch with their customer base or market trends.

Denon Line Show 2008

This week I had the privilege of attending the Denon Line Show & Press Event in Dana Point, California. A top floor room that looked out over the Pacific Ocean from the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa was my home for a couple of nights while attending, and it proved to be a great trip full of demos and information. An idyllic setting by any measure, and it provided me a great evening of relaxation prior to my day of work - yeah, we call this work.

The Boston Experience

How often does a company claim to "reinvent" itself? And how many times is it actually true? Boston Acoustics is making a lot of changes - dropping most of their speaker lines, dropping many of their accessory products, and even dropping the "Acoustics" from their name. Reinvention? Absolutely. The new face of Boston was unveiling to us and reported directly to you.

Bang & Olufsen On Location

Bang & Olufsen has been around for many, many years - probably a lot more than many American's would realize. In 1976 RBH Sound produced its first loudspeaker. RBH soon began to OE M for McIntosh, (back in the days of Gordon Gow), providing cabinets for their speakers. This set the stage for doing a superb job since McIntosh didn't worry about how to cheapen the product, but to make it better and, at least at the time, class leading in performance.

Audioholics On Location: Factory Tour #2 of Axiom Audio

We questioned Ian about the Axiom testing procedures in accordance to NRC standards. It's always a pleasure to provide coverage of companies such as Denon that are repetitively innovative in their product engineering and design approach. While we were a bit disappointed to hear of no new developments on their much anticipated separates packages, we certainly understood their delay. With the advent of HD DVD, the format battle between HD-DVD and Blu- Ray , indecisiveness of digital transmission protocols, and new supportive surround formats such as Dolby Digital Plus (and the fact that Dolby labs is NOT licensing this technology until next year) the product release delay makes a lot of sense nobody wants to have an obsolete product 6 months after its release, right?) Rest assured however, that the Denon separates solutions, when released, will be as innovative and perhaps as much as a quantum leap in technology for the separates marketplace as the AVR-5805 was to receivers. Until that day, we will just have to settle for the AVR-5805 as being the trend-setter for both preamp/processors and receivers.

Denons 2005 Summer Conference - DVD Player Lineup

Denon announced some new DVD players during their 2005 Summer Conference at Amelia Island and it looks like a couple a new players are really agressively targeting the competition. The biggest thing we noticed were the new DVD-1920 and DVD 756S which provide a Faroudja FLi2301 chip along with HDMI 1.1 with digital bass management. An aluminum front panel and parallel 480i video output (concurrent with HDMI) make these very impressive players for only $349.

New Denon HTR Receivers - Conference Day 3

Similar to the new AVR Series but less custom features such as added multi room sources, the HTR represents their high value line up for folks whose primary focus is on the main zone of audio - the theater room if you will.

Denon 2005 Summer Conference - S-Series Home Theater Systems

As the home theater-in-a-box market continues to grow (for example, it showed $800 million in sales this year as opposed to $450 million in sales for A/V receivers) it is apparently clear that consumers are very interested in small form factor 2-channel and home theater systems. I don't often eat a good breakfast so custom omelettes and pastries were quite the treat (though I didn't see anyone who actually went for the salmon option that was presented). There are a lot of industry veterans at this conference, both in terms of installers and distributers - and we certainly haven't more than just a handful of people in the industry (most from New York in fact).

Axiom Audio Loudspeakers Factory Tour

Axiom loudspeakers design philosophies adhere to their rigid scientific measurement standards and psychoacoustical testing protocols of the National Research Council (NRC). This year, I was personally invited by Yamaha to take part in this event. Marketing Services Manager, Bruce Bernstein, contacted me to ensure I was planning on going and sweetened the deal by saying "We are gonna show you things that will make your head spin". With that in mind, I realized that I could not refuse and coordinated with their sales force to set up hotel accommodations for my wife and me. Since the show was in Ft. Lauderdale , only a five hour trip from my home in Tarpon Springs (really 4 hours in my 2002 Maxima!) no uncomfortable plane trip was required.
