Cerwin Vega Announces 21-inch Subwoofer

by Clint DeBoer last modified March 29, 2007
Cerwin Vega CVA Series

Cerwin Vega CVA Series

The home theater market sees subwoofers growing smaller and smaller, but in the professional market things are quite different. To perfectly illustrate this, Cerwin Vega has announced that it is introducing a new 21-inch subwoofer to its professional line. OK, the cat's out of the bag - this is a sound reinforcement subwoofer, and not intended for home theater use - but WOW, 21 inches - that's pretty big!

To date, anything over 18-inches has been impractical due to issues with cone stiffness and breakup. A 21-inch subwoofer is a challenge and it seems Cerwin Vega! has broken through some of the limitations and made a product that can work well for professional sound reinforcement use.

The Cerwin-Vega Active Series consists of two models, the CVA-121 and CVA-118, named in accordance with their respective drivers. Both subs are actually pretty tame in terms of size, given their 18-inch and 21-inch driver complement. Both subs are active with built-in amplifiers and have functional cast aluminum grills which double as heat-sinks to minimize power compression and maximize driver performance.

In addition to the expected XLR and 1/4" connectors, the CVA subwoofers have Master/Slave output connectors that allow for multiple compatible subs to be connected in series (with no loss of resolution or signal since they are active). The subwoofers also feature a 35 mm pole-mount socket to accommodate a "satellite" speaker for full range performance and the CVA-121 includes removable steel casters so you can move it without a forklift. Both subs are constructed of 18 mm hardwood and finished with either durable Coolex® polyurethane paint or a high-grade black carpet finish.

CVA-121

With this product, Cerwin Vega is the first loudspeaker company to successfully design a 1200 watt, 21-inch active subwoofer. The CVA-121 features Cerwin Vega’s Stroker technology, which utilizes a three spider driver design to optimize cone excursion and voice coil efficiency. Subs feature a built-in 1200 watt (2400 watt peak), high-efficiency Class H amplifier and an on-board parametric equalizer that allows for added adjustment of the gain, frequency and Q for customized performance options.

  • High-Performance 21-inch Woofer with Stroker™ Technology

CVA-118

The CVA-118 boasts a high-performance 18-inch Cerwin Vega woofer and, like its 21-inch big brother, the CVA-118 features built-in amplification for an integrated, all-in-one solution but with 700 watt (1400 watt peak) output.

Consider what they use at the movie theaters, they don't go low they go loud. That is what pro-audio is for I guess.

Not entirely true these days. Klipsch is making sub systems for theatres that are flat to 17hz and JBL makes subs that are flat to 20hz. Even the older gear can go to 25hz when set up correctly.

Back in my foolish days as a freewheeling youth I used to run a 'Fosgate 18" in the back of my '89 Range Rover. Notice that was singular. One of those things could make you go def for hours, shake any house, and plaster a smile across your face for days. Who knew that Sarah McLachlan had earth shattering bass? Everything had earth shattering bass with that thing, I can barely imagine what a pro 21" could do. My god!
