Gene interviews Genesis “permanent part time member” Daryl Stuermer who has played lead guitar for the band on live performances for over 30 years. Daryl discusses how it was getting back together with the boys after a nearly 15 year sabbatical. Gene grills Genesis on their not-so-enthusiastic performance at VH-1 Rock Honors and the selection of boy band Keane doing a tribute song, but later hails their 2007 tour performance. Daryl discusses Phil Collins’ unique signature sound both in vocals and behind the drum kit while Gene wishes he could play drums like Phil. The 2007 Europe/USA tour was a smashing success, so much so that fans were demanding more shows at the end while Daryl was also ready to keep going. Will they tour again soon? What about a new CD? Listen to the podcast to find out…
Audio mastering is the process of taking audio mixes and preparing them for their best presentation to the world. It is a process that involves tremendous technical knowledge of the audio path and all its possibilities and liabilities. It also is a process that requires an emotional commitment to the audio being serviced. The past twenty years has seen this profession grow tremendously as two-channel audio has been dominated by the CD. As we move toward other formats and surround audio growth, new challenges are facing the mastering houses. This article takes us on a tour of the process of surround sound mastering in a studio, including interesting feedback from world renowned recording engineers Bob Ludwig and Jeff Lipton.
Being a musician on a record that has national/international distribution is a tremendously invigorating and humbling experience. I have been fortunate to have this experience as a bass player many times over the course of my career. For me this is a very special opportunity not to be taken for granted. You never know when the next call will come. I have been working on the craft of bass for 32 years and to get to apply my skills on such great music and with these tremendous musicians goes beyond words! I trust you will enjoy this "insider's" view of a session and take some of this into your next listening experience.
Tonight VH1 aired their 2007 Rock honors show which featured legendary bands Heart, ZZ Top, Genesis and Ozzy Osborne. Being a huge Genesis fan, I decisively focused my show report on their performance and the coverage or lack there of on VH1. I wrote this article a bit steamed that VH1 cut Genesis finest performance of the night, and the powers that be chose Keane as their tribute band, and that Phil’s mic seemed to be a dB or 2 too low, but I will get over it. Life will go on, and I will keep on rocking.
Daryl Stuermer has been Genesis' lead touring guitarist since 1977 and Phil Collins' lead guitarist since Phil busted out into his solo career in the early 80s. Daryl has been a key player on all of Phil Collins world tours and most of his recordings throughout the years where Phil often refers to him as Genesis "permanent part time member". Check out this interview I conducted with Daryl to get a glimpse on what is cooking with Genesis, and learn about his latest solo album "Go" which brings Daryl's music into the foreground of Progressive rock.
Live Earth concerts will be held July 7 in cities around the world, including London, aimed at raising climate change awareness. Whether or not you agree with the cause is irrelevant. I for one am looking forward to some of the bands that will be performing at this event. Most notably, Genesis will be there headed up by Phil Collins on drums and vocals.
I was recently introduced to the music of Roger Powell. Much to my surprise, Roger has been on the music scene since the late 60s where he began his career as a recording engineer in Atlanta Georgia. If you didn’t know the name Roger Powell till now, chances are you heard his handy work and sonic chops in many well-known artists recordings. This interview gives a background of the artist and discusses his most recent release - Fossil Poets.
For years I have told friends that any of Cirque du Soleil's shows represent the best entertainment for your dollar to be found anywhere in the world. I love concerts, theater, sporting events, and yes, a circus. And to say that Cirque combines the best of all of these events still sells them short. Cirque du Soleil stands in a class by itself. Over a year ago, when I heard that Cirque had struck a deal to produce a show based on the music of The Beatles, I was thrilled, and couldn't wait to see the result.
Steve Hackett served as the lead guitarist for the British Progressive Rock band Genesis from 1971-1976. In the band, he was also a contributing member for writing much of their music. Some of his most noted contributions were: Firth of Fifth, Entangled, and Horizons. Steve played a variety of stringed instruments including, 12 String, 6 String Nylon and Steel Guitars, Electric, etc. Steve and Peter Gabriel were more of the driving force behind the progressive sound of Genesis that die hard fans to this day still cherish.
Genesis, one of the premier British progressive/pop rock groups of the 70s, 80s and early 90's is back after a 15 year hiatus of its core members: Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks. Joining them are their accompanying musicians they've toured with since the mid 70's: Chester Thompson (Drummer) and Daryl Stuermer (Lead Guitarist).
