What is the Function of an RS-232C Port?

by Clint DeBoer last modified August 30, 2004

Q: What is the function of an RS-232 port?

A: An RS-232 port is a standard digital physical interface and protocol for relatively low-speed serial data communication between computers and related devices. An industry trade group, the Electronic Industries Association (EIA), defined it originally for Teletype devices.

Some newer audio hardware such as preamp processors, projectors, and/or home theater receivers offer this feature for the user to connect with home automation systems; and/or download newer firmware for the product which may increase performance, update features, update decoding capabilities, increase compatibility with latest technology, fix firmware bugs, etc.
