Samsung HLR5688W 1080p DLP TV

1080p DLP - need we say more? Samsung Electronics introduced the 5th Generation of DLP TVs with its HLR5688W, the very first available 1080p DLP TV. Samsung also announced the groundbreaking 68-Series, featuring the largest DLP screen ever at 67" (the 70" non-production screen is pictured at right).

"Samsung has long been recognized as a digital television pioneer, and this next-generation of DLP TVs is our most ambitious yet. The 1920 x 1080 pixel progressive display gives our customers perfectly smooth, cinema film quality HD video and unprecedented image clarity," said Steve Panosian, Director of Marketing for Samsung's Visual Display Group. "The days of reduced picture quality on larger screens are ancient history. With top-of-the-line high-definition video conversion, Samsung's 2005 DLP models turn any programming into a captivating, theater-quality experience."

The 56" HLR5688W pedestal DLP is the very first 1080p DLP TV to hit the market. Some features:

  • 1920 x 1080p resolution (Cinema Smooth Optical Engine)
  • 5000:1 contrast ratio (stated)
  • Digital Natural Image Engine (DNIe) to handle format conversion and scaling.
  • Digital Cable Ready (DCR) with a built-in CableCARD slot
  • Two HDMI inputs
  • Cinema Film Mode
  • 2:3 pull-down
  • 30-watts of audio power

The unique pedestal display was sleek and showed a nice attention to detail. The 50" model, HLR5087W, incorporates the same features with a Cinema Smooth™ 720P engine and a single HDMI. Both models will be available in February 2005. The HLR5087W has a $3,699 MSRP. The HLR5688W has a $4,999 MSRP.

World's Largest DLP TV at 67"
Samsung showed off its top-of-the-line HLR6768W made "digital television history" with a 67" screen, the largest to-date in a DLP TV. A unique floating screen design separated the screen and bezel from its base creating a rather stunning visual effect even when the set was off.

The 67" HLR6768W will be available in June 2005 for an MSRP of $6,999. Additional models in the series include: the 56" HLR5668W which will be available in June 2005 at $4,199 MSRP. The 56" HLR6168W will also be available in June 2005, for an MSRP of $4,499.

Also on display at CES 2005 is Samsung's 67 Series of DLP televisions. The core series features an elegant, table-top casing incorporating Samsung's striking new floating screen design. Ranging from 12" to 17" deep, and weighing from under 70 to 120 pounds, the 67 Series provides a slim, lightweight addition to any home décor. All of the sets feature an ATSC Tuner / NTSC Tuner, Digital Cable Ready (DCR) with built-in CableCARDTM, and Samsung's convenient AnyNet™ System Solution. The Cinema Smooth™ 720P Engine, enhanced DNIe™ and 30 watts of audio power ensure that each model produces superior video and sound quality, bringing home theater to the next level.

All four models in the 67 Series will be available in April 2005. The 46" HLR4667W will be positioned at MSRP $2,699. The 50" HLR5067W will be positioned at MSRP $2,999. The 56" HLR5667W will be positioned at MSRP $3,499. The 61" HLR6167W will be positioned at MSRP $3,799.
