Chapter XI: The Fellowship of the Plone

by December 28, 2006

The recent import and Coranto files did not result in multi-page articles.

The Technical Article and Editorial types have been re-made so that they contain a Page One text attribute. I've re-imported all content as of Wednesday, 27th December 2006 around 10am Eastern time.  I hope this one does it!

Visibility: Currently nothing imported/pasted into the /education or /tweaks sections are showing up, even when published.

The Feature Section types were only displaying either Technical Article or Product Review types. I've expanded that list to include plain Documents, as well as Editorials, Press Releases, and News Items. They should show up now!

Is there anyway to simply get you a 1/2 star icon (below) and translate the front page data to the last page look (with some kind of separator)?

Of course! What I wanted to point out was the inconsitency between the performance and value ratings (which allow halvsies) and the other ratings (which allow whole numbers). If you're OK with that, of course I am too. The Review Conclusion type now includes the performance/value ratings with half-ratings.

Looks like we can still get those internal pages to wrap. The first line shows up next to the dropdown instead of just below it. We've been putting in a paragraph break to compensate for now

OK, I've re-formatted the initial menu so that it's no longer a float and includes a <br/> after it by default. If that doesn't help, I've no idea what will!

New Stuff Home Page (some of this you know about)

Yes indeed. You've already found by now that there are the gradients you've provided, the "advertisement" and "sponsored" graphics, shopping-cart icons, 300-by-250 banners, and re-located search bar.

However, I've not included the drop-down to indicate what to search. For one, I'm not sure what to include in that list besides "Audioholics". Secondly, to program disabling of the LiveSearch when something else is chosen that doesn't support live searching is something I'm not quite sure how to face. Third, on sites I visit I often see such a narrowing opportunity more of a liability, particularly on sites with which I'm unfamiliar (to me, I'm lucky to even come upon the site; to make me manually narrow down what I'm looking for is a failure of Google, and thus, I hit the back button and try elsewhere), fourthly, I realize it is stylish to omit the search button, but Plone prides itself on being compatible with even the most primitive of browsers, including those that don't recognize the RETURN key as "submit this form, please".

But then again, you're in charge, so simply tell me what to include in the drop-down menu and I'll figure out a way to include it, disabilng the LiveSearch appropriately!

Additional Navigation

We'll talk tomorrow.

Tighten up the first page of a review

OK, I've included a few ideas: pick what you like.

For the specifications, you might try making them either (1) an expandable section or (2) put them in the portlets to the right.

Option (1) is nice in that it makes a page a bit more interactive; users only have to view the specs if they explictly choose to by clicking on the + sign. Option (2) is nice in that it draws the eye into the right-side advertising area, an area that the Nielsen/Norman Group's studies have shown that are routinely ignored by web viewers.

The drawback of (1) is the additional navigation required by the user. The drawback of (2) is that the specs might be completely missed as additional advertising.

I've interjected more of the blue color into the heading of the Introduction.  OK or not?  You decide!

I've made the rating scale more graphical with blue gradient bars. Got better bars?

I've added Buy It Now graphic and text underneath the Main Image of a review.

I've run a program that re-sets all of the sub-pages of a multi-page feature to match the byline of the parent object. Also, this program re-sets the date/times of the modification date of every object to its creation date, keeping an honest view for your users. You can re-run this process at any time by visiting /ahreset

Correction of the typo and new PriceGrabber code to folow!
